About

The Chieftains on Tour

The Chieftains bring a long legacy of traditional Irish music along with them every time they take the stage. Leader and multi-instrumentalist Paddy Moloney has been on board since the band began their journey back in 1962, and he continues to stoke the flame of Celtic folk for audiences all over the world. Some of the comparatively "new boys" in the band have been on board since the '70s. Bringing instruments like fiddle, bodhran, pipes, harp, flute and pennywhistle into play, The Chieftains don't go in for any sort of flash or spectacle, but they invest each performance with so much energy, it's clear that passion and fun are top priorities. Chieftains shows feature ripping instrumental tunes, tear-jerking ballads, and sometimes step dancers who come to the front of the stage and get the crowd stirred up with their fancy footwork.

The Chieftains in Concert

The Chieftains are known all over the planet as the absolute rulers of the realm when it comes to Irish folk music. Their story started in 1962 when Paddy Moloney put the group together in Dublin along with Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy. Two years later The Chieftains released their first, self-titled album, and though the band started earning attention in the '60s, it wasn't until the following decade that they really exploded on an international level, partly buoyed by their score for the 1975 Stanley Kubrick–directed movie Barry Lyndon. Ever since then, the band has gone from strength to strength, winning armloads of Grammys and other honors along the way. While members have come and gone over the years, the mission of The Chieftains — to be ambassadors of traditional Irish music — has remained consistent, even when they've collaborated with icons the likes of Van Morrison, Sting and Sinead O'Connor.

    True Serendipity

by Oldfart1 on 3/7/18Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

We purchased tickets for daughter's Christmas present and decided to go along, not knowing much about the Chiefans. What a great surprise this proved to be. The show was lively and very entertaining. We loved both the music and the fantastic dancing. This is a group I would go to see again.

    celtic madness

by jfc352 on 3/20/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

natalie macmaster and donnell leahy , their band ,and their kids absolutely stole the show . from the moment they sent a piper down to the stage from the back , followed by themselves ,they owned this beautiful theater and everyone in it . the energy , passion and love these wonderful musicians have for their craft is infectious . the chieftains are an institution , still playing 55 years later with precision and heart . i liked all the extras they shared their stage with . the step dancers , the soloist , the troupe of young irish dancers , the police bagpipe band , and the wonderful female choir . the encore was over the top , with everyone on stage off stage and just everywhere . i see a lot of live music . but this was a show to remember . i also have to comment on the venue . njpac is a true treasure . it is the most beautiful theatre in nj hands down . the staff is terrific , parking is great , site lines are good , and the acoustics are phenomenal . i have seen multiple shows here , and let me tell you this is a place where everyone brings their A game to .

    Leave Happy

by Ghin on 3/18/17Schermerhorn Symphony Center - Nashville

This was my 3rd time seeing the Chieftains and I'd see them every week if I could. The music ranges from tap your feet to hauntingly touching. There is a soul to this music that can be felt in the rhythms. The Schermerhorn was a great venue and the orchestra added so much to the performance.

    Great Chieftain show!

by AmericanIrish2017 on 3/14/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

All my favorite tunes, with Paddy Maloney leading the way. The band was great, the soloist too. A very enjoyable show, with all the favorite tunes and some less familiar ones, too.

Natalie McMaster & Donnell Leahy were amazing, and it went over the top when their kids joined in, playing the fiddle and dancing!! The Chieftains were also great, as was everyone in the group! So many wonderful and talented musicians!

I have intended to see The Chieftains for many years. This time I got a front row seat and thoroughly enjoyed the show. All my expectations of the group were exceeded. And the collection of local guest talents, musicians and dancers, was quite entertaining as well. It was a satisfying evening, pleasant and charming. Don't miss seeing the show if you get a chance.

    Incredible!

by lexcyn on 3/10/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Seeing The Chieftains was an unforgettable event. Being of Irish descent I love the music and culture of Ireland and The Chieftains provided brilliant music, traditional dance, a local pipe and drum corp, a local girl's choir, wisecracking humor and a sense of happiness and elation for the entire audience. I have seldom been to a concert that made everyone feel so wonderful. It was like being at home with a group of old friends enjoying the comradery and uplifting music. I think everyone there left feeling happy and giddy. Definitely a wonderful way to spend an evening!

    Great Show but Too Short!

by Misssfit on 3/10/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The Chieftains were outstanding as usual and it was great to see them utilize so much local talent in their show. However, the concert itself was not even 90 minutes in length, including an encore. We drove 90 minutes just to get to the venue and another hour to get home after the show so we spent more time on the road than the Chieftains were on stage. If this was a 'mini' or shortened performance then I wish it would've been advertised as such, to save disappointment.

Opening act much better than main event

by Dannyboy2388888 on 3/8/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Chieftains are over the hill and their part was a mishmash of various people with seemingly no connection. The opening act was far superior.

Heart was in the right place but

by SHADOROOSKI on 3/8/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

FIRST HALF WAS GREAT. SECOND WAS MUCH TOO LONG. LEADER WAS SUPER FOR HIS AGE. AFTER 55 YEARS THEY SHOULD HAVE LEARNED THAT LESS IS MORE.

We totally enjoyed this evening. Every performer on stage showed amazing skills. The musicians were also great singers or dancers. Combine this with Paddy Molony's great Irish sense of humor. The entire audience left with a smile on their face.

A night of great traditional music and dance

by DrScully67 on 3/16/16Town Hall - New York

This was my first Chieftains concert and what can I say? It was amazing! I wanted to get up and dance and I am not familiar with traditional Irish dance. They had guest dancers and singers who joined them in a few songs. The concert was over much too quickly. I would definitely see them in concert again.
