About

The Chieftains on Tour

The Chieftains bring a long legacy of traditional Irish music along with them every time they take the stage. Leader and multi-instrumentalist Paddy Moloney has been on board since the band began their journey back in 1962, and he continues to stoke the flame of Celtic folk for audiences all over the world. Some of the comparatively "new boys" in the band have been on board since the '70s. Bringing instruments like fiddle, bodhran, pipes, harp, flute and pennywhistle into play, The Chieftains don't go in for any sort of flash or spectacle, but they invest each performance with so much energy, it's clear that passion and fun are top priorities. Chieftains shows feature ripping instrumental tunes, tear-jerking ballads, and sometimes step dancers who come to the front of the stage and get the crowd stirred up with their fancy footwork.

The Chieftains in Concert

The Chieftains are known all over the planet as the absolute rulers of the realm when it comes to Irish folk music. Their story started in 1962 when Paddy Moloney put the group together in Dublin along with Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy. Two years later The Chieftains released their first, self-titled album, and though the band started earning attention in the '60s, it wasn't until the following decade that they really exploded on an international level, partly buoyed by their score for the 1975 Stanley Kubrick–directed movie Barry Lyndon. Ever since then, the band has gone from strength to strength, winning armloads of Grammys and other honors along the way. While members have come and gone over the years, the mission of The Chieftains — to be ambassadors of traditional Irish music — has remained consistent, even when they've collaborated with icons the likes of Van Morrison, Sting and Sinead O'Connor.

    Brilliant performance!

by Gabhann on 3/21/18Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

The Chieftains didn't disappoint with their rousing performance at Lynn Auditorium. Paddy Moloney is sheer genius along with Kevin Cunneff and Matt Molloy. Bring a bona fide NASA astronaut on stage was awesome...local talent included the North Shore pipe band, Ruby Slippers a capella group, and the fabulous Deirdre Goulding dancers!

    The Chieftains were Terrific

by Joetheplumberpoet on 3/20/18Tilles Center Concert Hall - Brookville

The Chieftains are a wonderful ensemble. They make you smile and feel good inside. Filled with warmth and melody and rythym. It is a music of the earth. They began with one of my favorites"The Wind From The South". Paddy Maloney still as strong as ever- as the rest of them. I did miss Sean Keane and hope he's well. Loved the show...

    The Cheifs

by 1Luckycharm on 3/19/18Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Thoroughly enjoyed this memorable show on the night before St. Pats enhanced by the guest bagpipers and tap dancers. The small size of this venue further adds to the experience of any show for the attendee.

THERE'S A REASON WHY THEY'RE CALLED THE CHIEFTAINS

by roxy2x on 3/13/18Town Hall - New York

Saturday nite concert at Town Hall demonstrated once again why the Chieftains are the world's premiere Irish music group. From Paddy Mulroney leading the opening number to the clogging throughout the evening to the bag-pipe band that played first on-stage, then in the audience and finally outside the theater and down the block to Times Square, the Chieftains concert was a marvel one of those one-of-a-kind experiences you could never get on any of their excellent cd's.

    Fifty-six years of exceptional music

by Shamrocksue on 3/13/18Town Hall - New York

There's simply no better entertainment event than a Chieftains concert. Led by the masterful Paddy Moloney, The Chieftains 56th Anniversary Concert at Town Hall was a magical and memorable evening. In addition to the music, there was Ottawa, Canada-style step dancing as well as traditional Irish step dancing, courtesy of the Donny Golden School of Irish Dance (which I attended as a child)! If you love traditional Irish music, this is the concert to go to. The music will stay with you long after the concert ends.

    The Chieftains.. Better than ever!

by Pauley2 on 3/13/18Town Hall - New York

1st, The venue itself is nice. Mid sized, “old worldy” and from what I could make out most seats had a decent view of the stage. Even the back row wasn’t too far from the stage. Parking is nearby (same block) and Grand Central just a 5 min walk away. I’d have no problem going to The Town Hall again... The Chieftains themselves were excellent as ever. They all seem ageless! Their music is just as I remembered it all the way back to my childhood when they always seemed to be in the background somewhere... Watching Paddy Maloney’s hands as they effortlessly fluttered around the uileann pipes left me in awe. They had plenty of extra guests who had kept things “fresh” with all sorts of talents that expanded the show well beyond the Chieftains music itself: Traditional Irish dancing, tap dancing, solo vocalists, solo harp, a pipe band, a mini “choir” and a few extra “surprises”. There was something here for everyone. And all delivered with a sense of humor.. (afterwards the pipe band performed impromptu on the street outside, drawing a crowd large enough to almost block it!) My only complaint was that I felt it could have been a little longer, or have had an intermission so I could have had a drink... (and maybe mic the choir a little better. I felt they were drowned out a bit...) One slight venue problem worth mentioning was that I saw a sign saying “no food or beverages” allowed in the seating area - so I obeyed and didn't buy a drink to bring to my seat. However when I was seated I saw people around me with drinks in their seats.. Why? Either remove the sign or enforce the rules!

    The Chieftains...better than ever

by AMORF on 3/13/18Town Hall - New York

What a beautiful show! So uplifting. Musical. Varied and unabashedly Irish. I have seen the Chieftains more times than I can remember over the years and they somehow have the ability to just get better and better. Go see them. You won’t be disappointed.

I've seen these guys four times now. They transcend types of music and types of artists. They combine seamless tunes with laughter and fun. They ALWAYS include local talent on stage and get the crowd involved by dancing around the venue. Do not miss them if they come to your town.
