About The Capitol Steps
The Capitol Steps on Tour
The Capitol Steps offer welcome comic relief in the place that may need it the most: Washington, D.C. The long-standing comedy troupe has kept the nation's capital on its toes since December 1981, when a group of Senate staffers came together to lighten the mood at their annual Christmas party. Over the years, The Capitol Steps' cast has expanded, diversified and toured the country back and forth. In fact, there are now multiple casts — "the result of having large numbers of unemployed Hill staffers," as they put it. At home in Washington, they perform Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. On tour, they make stops at theaters, opera houses and other prestigious venues in cities from sea to shining sea. Expect silly skits, catchy songs, dead-on impressions and even some thought-provoking commentary, all in the name of fun — and the First Amendment, of course.
The Capitol Steps' motto says just about everything you need to know: "We put the MOCK in Democracy," the comedy team proudly proclaims. It all began in 1981 when Elaina Newport, Jim Aidala and the late Bill Strauss — three of Senator Charles Percy's staffers — put together a few skits and song parodies to share at their Christmas party. The performance was a success, and The Capitol Steps became Washington, D.C.'s go-to group for some much needed laughs. Since forming, the cast has brought on more former Capitol Hill staffers, along with many other theater and comedy veterans. They've recorded over 35 albums and have appeared on major network shows like Good Morning America, 20/20 and CNN's Inside Politics. Each year, they produce comedy specials for public radio, including "Politics Takes a Holiday," which airs every New Year's Eve and 4th of July. They've even performed for a handful of U.S. presidents. For the rest of us, The Capitol Steps share their latest comedy bits every Friday and Saturday night at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. Other cast members tour the country to help us all better digest the absurdities of our current state of affairs.

The singing was pretty good - and the numbers were from hysterical to ho-hum. Some songs seemed a bit dated, and having just an upright piano for accompaniment, an amateur-looking banner for a set, and mics with cords all made me feel a little like I was in a time warp. But I got some good laughs.
Political satire and lampooning at its best, no matter which side of the spectrum. If you are in the news (mostly political news), you are a "target". I like the fact that they change to have the most up-to-the minute items included in their repertoire. I also like that they mention the local politicians as well. All the songs are great, but it is always worth the wait for the Lirty Dies. They simply save the best for the last. It lasted a little over an hour and a half and was well worth what we paid. I have seen them perform several times and I have never been disappointed in what they do. They spare no one!
loved it. It was timely, very funny, and spared no political party or issue.
Great comedy/skit routines that are fun and balanced!
TCS are better than ever--a must see--especially as we are about to enter the 2012 political season!
Great combination of a few classics along with numbers right out of today's headlines. An absolute must for anyone who enjoys political satire.
I am an avid NPR fan and have heard bits of Capitol Steps on the air several times. The concept is excellent. The scripts were entertaining but the delivery was sometimes lacking. It was often difficult to discern the words expressed in the songs which is key to enjoying the entire show. Improved annunciation and maybe better acoustics would help. I had to work too hard to hear the dialogue to really enjoy the show. That said, my favorite actress potrayed Kim Jung Il and all of her characters woderfully and with a great singing voice.
The Capitol Steps were just fantastic as always. Their content is always up to date including local events.
This program was great. They hit the nail right on the head. I would go and see it again. The actors were very talented.
Even though this is the 4th time we been to hear and see the Capitol Steps, they are just as relevant, funny, and thought provoking as ever. Their material is new, fresh, and up-to-date. The actors are amazing in their range of impersonations and they can sing. The revised lyrics to old hits are show stoppers.
We all LOVED The Capitol Steps!! It is VERY entertaining and soooooooooo funny!! It's bipartisan, so everyone gets slammed - kinda like equal time ..........
Thoroughly enjoyable and current to the political climate, a clever, funny show delivered by a talented cast.
We thought it was one of the funniest comedy shows we have ever seen! My husband laughed so hard he almost lost control of a bodily function. The whole show from start to finish was off the wall and right on target. I especially loved the fifties music used as the base for your parodies. We will come again.
I had seen the Capitol Steps in DC twice. The road show was definitely not as good. However, it was funny and provided a number of good laughs. The Peabody website had said to mention to the parking lot attendants that we were attending an event there and should be given a discount rate. The attendant just looked at me blankly and stated the charge was $5 (the price shown on the sign). Another problem was that other people were seated in two of the four seats I had purchased.
This was one of the best, most clever, and funniest performances we've ever attended. My husband, who generally smiles benignly at humor, laughed harder than I've ever seen him laugh. So well done, so timely, so great!!
Sidesplitting song parodies and skits. No one is sacred - elected officials, stars, foreign dignitaries, corporate executives.
We saw them first in DC when they were playing gigs for conventions, then again in Philly (another convention). Many CD's later, Capitol Steps started coming to Florida during the time we were traveling. 2 sold out shows later, whahoo...got good tickets. With all the material from the last 3 years this should be one of the best yet! Political satire at its finest. Laughter guaranteed.
witty and fun. The staffers know their subjects better than those in office!
Superb singing, witty commentary. Always a delight.
