About

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE:

With a moniker that namechecks both The Rolling Stonesí multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and one of the largest cult tragedies of all time, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are always ready to bring a freaky experience to the stage. They start with a psychedelic ë60s sound and inject a healthy dose of riff-based rock to get fans shaking their money makers. On favorites like ìAnemoneî, ìPishî, and ìStraight Up and Downî, the group lets it all hang out with their trippy revelry of jangly guitars, insistent beats, and reedy organs. Frontman Anton Newcombe leads audiences through this mind-blowing journey, providing both the hypnotic melodies and spacey guitar solos that have become the bandís hallmarks. In concert The Brian Jonestown Massacre manage to outshine their adventurous records by delving even deeper into their far-out vibes, and ticket buyers shouldnít miss the chance to get swept up in the bandís heady grooves any time they perform.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leader Anton Newcombe founded The Brian Jonestown Massacre in 1990, banding together a revolving lineup of San Francisco musicians for the groupís shoegaze-inspired 1993 debut Spacegirl & Other Favorites. After some sonic retooling and a lineup turnover, the group won over fans and critics with an impressive trio of albums all released in 1996 that focused on psychedelia and R&B-driven sounds. In 2004 the band was featured in Ondi Timonerís documentary Dig!, which focused on the love-hate relationship between Newcombe and The Dandy Warholsí frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The remainder of the ë00s saw the group earn praise for their daring explorations of everything from electronica to avant-garde music. Since then The Brian Jonestown Massacre has revealed even more facets to their sound with albums like 2015ís orchestral Musique de Film ImaginÈ, and they continue to offer crowds a rocking, mind-expanding experience everywhere they play.

    The Massacre

by Jim Jones on 10/19/23House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

It was a bloody good time, I drank the psychedelic Kool-Aid, so it was even better than fantastic. No matter what shenanigans come about, Anton & The Massacre deliver the sermon.

Amazing music and talent, but disorganized.

by Clay on 10/19/23House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an amazing band and everyone should see them. The songs are gorgeous and permeate the soul. This wasn’t the first time I’ve seen them and it wasn’t the best. Anton would incoherently rant in between songs. Maybe it was the speakers, but I couldn’t make out what he was talking about. He also just left halfway through the set to go to the bathroom. Joel came to the mic and told us about his book. He seemed shocked as well. They didn’t seem to care much for the audience. There was an inordinate amount of time between songs. Hopefully next time is better.

    Band needs practice

by Ralph on 10/18/23House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

The BJM needs some serious work. The skies the limit they say, while this is just a period parody act.

    Sounded great but Unorganized Set

by Jude Dez on 10/16/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

I love the BJM, I was excited to see them for the first time in my life. First off, they sounded tight and on point. BUT - they took way to long between songs, sometimes up to 2 minutes! It killed the rush of music they were playing. Anton (lead singer) is the one who took his time, there were moments when his band was pushing him to start a song, but then he would berate them. Great band, I love their music, but I would not pay to see them again.

    Disappointed

by CarlP on 10/16/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

I’ve seen BJM three times and this was a really bad show. Anton and the band spent inordinate amounts of time between songs tuning their guitars and noodling around. Fans wearing BJM shirts started leaving the show long before it was over. The show was boring and self-indulgent. This band is a shadow of its former self. I won’t pay to see them again.

    BJM Still bringing it.

by Tom on 10/16/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

A shockingly professional, coherent and musically brilliant set from BJM. Gem after gem from Anton's massive catalog of songs, a blazing wall of fuzzy guitars, Joel tapping it out like a deranged metronome and Anton playing his coy, cranky genius act. Perfect. Felt really lucky to experience it again after all these years.

    Ahhh-Mazing!

by BS on 10/3/23Varsity Theater - Minneapolis

This was my second time seeing them in five years and my first time attending a concert solo (which enhanced my overall experience, I think). Their opening act, Magic Castles, was pretty good. As for the main act, I just can't get over how much better live they sound. An excellent variety of old hits and new. Anton's small rants between songs were highly entertaining. The venue was a perfect size, not too big and sounded great. You can still hear the music when you're at the bar or need to use the bathroom. After the show I was able to chat with a couple of the guitarists outside of the venue and they were so lovely. This was probably the best concert-going experience I've ever had. Still grinning three days later.

    Fantastic concert and venue

Really loved the experience. Sound was not too loud that I had to use ear plugs. Lightning can be better.

    This Band is Phenomenal!

by Broadkill Scott on 9/21/239:30 CLUB - WASHINGTON

Anton Newcomb is a masterful artist, never dissapoints, cranking out new and timeless music. The guitars weave together into a hypnotic spell. I have followed this band for 30 years and their music exemplifies true artistic vision. Will never miss another BJM concert in DC and the 930 club is a great venue.

    Oh Anton

by Membrain on 9/21/239:30 CLUB - WASHINGTON

Anton seemed lost. The band was going through the motions to get to the next venue. Starting and stopping songs and Anton couldn’t find the lyric sheet that was right in front of him. He appeared overly high on something, or maybe everything? I was hoping for better but got exactly what I thought I would, mediocrity.

A fabulous show, with the band in fine form. Especially rocking were the last couple of jam-style songs.

    Not bad...

by Josh on 9/21/239:30 CLUB - WASHINGTON

Love this band and was especially optimistic about this 9:30 club show as BJM's latest album, "The Future is Your Past,"is one of their best imho. Sadly, Anton was in a bit of a sour mood and couldn't be bothered to sing much. But, in the absence of louder vocals, I was able to tune in a bit more to the rhythm section including the 2-4 other guitarists. You can appreciate how carefully crafted the rhythm patterns are for each song that makes up some a key part of the forward drive of BJM's sound. So all in all, a good show, just not a great one. Looking forward to the next chance to see them in DC>

Good lineup of songs, good sound, no excitement

by Obresident on 4/26/22The Observatory North Park - San Diego

I started listening to the band just a year ago. They have several good songs and the sound was just like on their records which was impressive. I just wished Anton and his band members would engage a bit louder with the audience than the occasional mumbling which I could not understand further back. People wait a long time to see a band. Just a louder hello and thanks for coming would be cool. Otherwise, sound was excellent and there was a lot of guitar switching between songs.
