THE B-52S IN CONCERT:

Since forming in 1976, The B-52s have always stood out for their thrift-store chic style and ability to craft catchy, retro-inspired hits. Over the years they might have let their beehives down, but every-thing else about the band is still as tight as it was 30 years ago. Their call-and-response choruses always get fans singing along, and their fun and funky grooves will have you dancing right along with the band. The B-52s are taking their party atmosphere to select cities across the U.S. on their 2015 tour, bringing all their cool style and flamboyant fun to a town near you.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Named after a particular type of beehive hairdo, The B-52s rocketed out of Athens, Georgia in the late ’70s. Starting with their smash hit “Rock Lobster”, the band developed a reputation for campy fun and catchy melodies that carried over to other favorites like “Planet Claire” and “Private Idaho”. By the end of the decade, the band achieved a major mainstream radio breakthrough with the hits “Love Shack” and “Roam”. The band stayed relevant into the ’90s, appearing in The Flintstones live action movie (as “The BC-52’s”) and performing the theme song from the Nickelodeon cartoon Rocko’s Modern Life. Almost 40 years later, this zany garage band is still having a blast -- and still sounds like a blast from the past.

  • B52s Still Rock the House

by MiddleAgedRocker on 7/13/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

There are some groups that, for me, bring me back to a specific place in time. The B52s is one of those groups. I was living in Philadelphia when 'Rock Lobster' was released and I can remember hanging out at an after hours bar and hearing it played. It is hard to believe 'Rock Lobster' was released 30 years ago! I had tried to see the B52s last year when they performed at the Paradise Club, but it was sold out. This time I had better luck. They performed last Saturday at the new Boston House of Blues. It was another sold out show. I can remember going to this venue over 30 years ago when it was a disco (15 Lansdowne Street), then another disco (Boston, Boston), then a club (Avalon). The last time I was there, I saw Robert Palmer (may he rest in peace). The lay out of the club hasn't changed. The majority of the tickets were for the 'standing room only' sections. I secured a ticket for a seat in the VIP section that looked down on the stage (great location). The B52s came on and started the set with their single 'Pump' from their latest release 'Funplex'. The B52s have their own distinctive sound, so some of the songs that I wasn't familiar with, sounded like their other more popular songs. The set list included 'Private Idaho', 'Mesopotamia', 'Funplex', 'Strobe Light', 'Quiche Lorraine', 'Juliet of the Spirits', 'Roam', and 'Love in the Year 3000'. The audience was jumping and singing through 'Love Shack'. Of course, everyone was yelling 'Tin Roof Rusted'. The only song I would have liked to have heard was 'Dance this Mess Around'. Kate Pearson and Fred Schneider were in great voice, Cindy Wilson's voice was a bit thin on some of the higher notes. Fred endeared me by playing the glockenspiel on one of the songs, which is an unusual instrument for a rock band. Keith Strickland is still pretty hot and really wailed on the guitar wearing his sun glasses. Both Fred and Kate look pretty much the same, too. Cindy needs to reconsider her wardrobe (she just doesn't have the legs to pull off a micro-mini skirt). Their encore brought the house down with 'Planet Claire' and 'Rock Lobster'. Even though Fred was yelling 'Down! Down!' none of the very middle aged audience were lowering themselves down to the floor (I don't think anyone's knees were up to it). Most of us in the VIP seats were dancing through the encore. It was a lot of fun.

by bricknord on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, fun, Uptown in KC is a great venue. The only fly in the ointment was the high priced Boulevard Wheats. No biggie, though. Play 6060-842 next time, guys!

  • B 52's Rock out with the lobster out

by clarkbar on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

This show was one of those shows that you wait for since you were a little kid, and it was well worth the wait. They put on an excellent show, shock and aww, thats undescribable. If you have the chance take it, the croud was chill and groovy as well nothing could have gone wrong.

  • B-52's not any worse for wear

by paperboy on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

The group still looks and sounds FABULOUS!!! Very high energy. I was hoping to hear some of their more obscure tunes ("Strobe Light" for example) and they delivered. "Planet Claire" brought the house down.

  • B-52's at the Uptown Theater, Kansas City.

by KansasCracka on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

I had been wanting to see the B-52's for a long time. They were fantastic and did a great mix of old and new songs. Fred Schneider seemed a little distracted. The worst part about the show was the sound at the Uptown, which was utterly pathetic. It's a shame because it's such a cool old theater...but they need a new P.A. and they need it now.

  • lost for words

by momof2gamb on 7/12/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

An act that never grows old. My 8yr old loved them too. Their talent, voices, crowd enthusiasm, etc. etc. etc. Amazing. Though it was tough standing all night, the people we were next to help keep my daughter up ontop of the back board so she could enjoyed them as well. Their music just makes you sing it over and over even after the event was over. It was nice to see so many difference age levels. The B52's will be around for a long time.

  • B52s were awesome

by budbandy on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

This was the absolute best concert I was ever at! Seating, what seating....once they came on it was standing room only! I only wish I would have been able to get up to the stage to get some better pics...

  • The B-52's are still rockin it!

by KCDrew on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

The B-52's are still just as fun, funky, and rockin it out as they were when I was in college. As an Alumni of Ga. Tech. I was able to relive the good ole days. The B-52's have the staying power that transcends generations. I would recommend to anyone to enjoy the sounds of the B-52's

  • Sound system was AWFUL!

by kkreicker on 7/12/09Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 2 out of 5

Half of the vocals could not be heard. We were very disappointed!

Great concert. They played all the old and new stuff. Crowd ate it up. Loved the energy. Started a little late but was a great concert. The sound was good. The crowd danced through the entire concert - the energy was amazing. The venue was excellent - would highly recommend in the future

  • B-52's Better Than Ever

by IEntered25 on 7/12/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The B-52's may be the tightest band I've ever seen. Guess that is what you get when you play together for 30 years. The size of the HOB Boston is perfect for a band like them. The one thing I didn't like is that they came on at 9 for a 7PM show. Nearly 45 minutes between opening band and feature is too long. That and the $6 Pabst Blue Ribbon...too much.

  • The B-52's Are Still Rocking!

by Lobsterman on 7/11/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The B-52's rocked The House of Blues, Boston, on May 16, 2009. The band played full force from the opening number until the final encore. Fred Schneider frantically danced about while sarcastically shouting out his lyrics, while Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson looked hip and sexy as they belted out lyrics better than they did back in their early days. All vocals were excellent, powerful, and reverberated throughout the venue, which allowed excellent viewing as well as phenomenal acoustics. Keith Strickland tore it up on electric guitar, and the back up musicians were perfectly in sinc. Both the new and the old songs sounded as good as they did on the original albums, and the bands stage presence was vibrant with lots of interaction with their zealous audience. The crowd was quite diverse, and included people of all ages, genders and races. Being an avid B-52's fan and having seen them live several times before, I'd have to say they didn't miss a beat and are as good now if not better than ever. The show was truly a phenomenal experience for the ears as well as the eyes. I can't wait to see them again!

  • Dance band extraordinare!

by PoeticJustice on 7/11/09Rams Head Live! - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

The members of The B-52's not only remained true to their original sound, they did so while also remaining true to themselves! The show was lively and fun, and it would have been that way just given the playlist. But the band members were also entertainers, and their enjoyment and command of the stage was evident. Not only did the audience dance, we laughed, listened, and interacted. It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to experience music live, especially at such an accessible venue like Rams Head Live! But to have the additional benefit of gracious hosts on stage elevates the concert to its true heights.

  • Great Show from the B-52's

  • B52'S IN BOSTON WAS PRICELESS!!!

by AMELIASAMPAIO on 7/11/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I HAD BEEN TO THE B 52'S SHOW 26 YEARS AGO IN BRASIL ,THERE WERE A ROCK CONCERT FOR 10 DAYS CALLED "ROCK'N RIO" . IT WAS LOVE ON THE FIRST SITE,I LOVED THAT BAND SINCE THE VERY FIRST MOMENT I SAW THEM,SO FOR ME WAS FUNNY TO SEE THEM AGAIN HERE IN THE US.I REALLY HAD FUN THAT NIGHT. CURIOSITY: I WAS WEARING THE SAME LITTLE BAG I WORE ON THE FIRST SHOW 26 YEARS AGO, I TOLD SOME PEOPLE THAT WERE AROUND ME AND THEY LOVED IT! I JUST GOT LITTLE SAD BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PLAY "LEGAL TENDER". BUT,EVEN STILL IT WAS WORTHY!

  • B-52's were a BLAST!

by NurseChip on 7/11/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I have been a fan of the B-52's for 24 years, so I was so excited to see them. They were FABULOUS! They were full of energy and the girls voices were as good as ever. The House of Blues is a great venue. Even the opening act, The 88, was terrific. The only thing I didn't like was that it was shorter than I'd like. I wish they'd played longer. That is the only reason I did not give them 5 stars. I wanted more!
