    Lucia di Lammermoor was beautiful!

by starshy926 on 11/17/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Tuesday night's performance was the first opera I've been able to attend in a couple years, so I was excited to go again. I didn't know much about Lucia di Lammermoor and didn't get a chance to read the synopsis beforehand, but was still able to follow along. Our tickets were upgraded from top balcony to orchestra before the show because they had some extra donor tickets. The acoustics were very good and the staging was really well done, very haunting. Was a great evening, great chance to get fancied up and enjoy.

    Lots of fun

by Baabee on 4/15/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Mozart was a rascal ~ it is amazing that he got away with this in the 1700's The opera was fun and light. I wish I could speak Italian so that I wouldn't need to rely on the subtitles provided. I thought the Baritone singer was amazing.

World-class production of Porgy and Bess

by gershwinfan on 3/9/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

This production was all I'd hoped for and more. At the performance we attended, all the principals were excellent, but Michael Redding's Porgy, Laquita Mitchell's Bess, Chauncey Parker's Sportin' Life, and Judith Skinner's Maria truly stood out. Redding and Mitchell's "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" duet in the first act left the house breathless with a beauty that moved some (including me) almost to tears. Keith Lockhart's conducting set the right tempos and balances, and the ensemble's choral singing and dancing were superb--the choreography was spectacular. The production made very effective use of the UK rear-projection technology, although the images in the hurricane scene, switching between the storm-torn water and Serena's room, sometimes seemed a little out of sync with what was going on in the music. All in all, though, a magical evening.

    Porgy & Bess was fabulous!

by jamtg on 3/9/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

The staging was innovative and effective. The orchestra was wonderful. The lead singers were great. The chorus was nothing short of amazing. All-in-all, we had a terrific time.

The sound of their voices were difficult to hear. You needed mics dropped down lower to the singers. We could hear them when they were on the scafeling but not when on the stage. It was disappointing and frustrating. I left at intermission because of it. I bought season tickets primarily for Porgy & Bess and was very disappointed. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

Porgy & Bess at Cobb Energy Ctr.

by G6inATL on 3/7/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Dinner & Porgy & Bess -the opera at Cobb Energy Center were great. Only constructive comment would be for the Cobb Energy Ctr. to update the sound system to surround sound. Each singer needed an individual microphone. It was difficult to hear the singers over the orchestra.

    Porg and Bess

by Enegue007 on 3/7/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

First time going to an Opera. The experience was nice. Sat kind of high up so missed a few lines here and there, put sub-titles helped. The digital technology was nice, but I like the creativity of a built set that allows the audience to paint more of their own picture. I would see it again, but must sit closer next time. Thumbs up!

    Amaizing voices

by Jeanettel30214 on 3/6/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Very beautiful presentation of Porgy and Bess, the cast was phenomenal and the three dimensional scenery was extremely beautiful and real. I found the production a little long but worth it. The Orchestra was also incredibly good. Getting to Cobb Energy Center however was a disaster, cops were every where with their blue lights on blinding the drivers. .

    Outstanding performance!!!

by preacherroe on 3/6/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

My first time at the Cobb Energy Center, and the entire evening was awesome! The theater is beautiful and all seats had good views. The set design, staging, and lighting were spectacular. And the voices were glorious--they filled the theater without amplification! It was an evening we shall remember for a long time.

Michael Redding will be a star!

by profandres on 3/6/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Great performance with some truly brilliant, outstanding moments. Michael Redding is clearly destined for greatness, combining a wonderful stage presence, acting, and singing to make a truly believeable character! The flapping and waving of the virtual scene screens were distracting whenever the singers changed scenes, and one has to wonder what the director was thinking when he staged Clara's opening scene in the rafters--it was all she could to to project past the orchestra. Someone failed to make a quality decision in terms of diction as well: the singers sometimes used Handelian diction, sometimes dialectic diction which was confusing and detracted from the audience appeal. With some direction, there could have been some continuity, which was (I believe) Gershwin's original intent.

    Summertime, when living is easy

by ShannonInATL on 3/3/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

I loved this production of Porgy and Bess. The video screens with the real images from Charleston really gave a different feel to the production.

    Left at intermission...

by UsedMyXMASMoney on 3/3/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

I was very disappointed in the acoustics & left at intermission. I evidently had purchased in error tickets in the Grand Tier -- what my generation calls the nose bleed section. Obviously my error in navigating the Ticketmaster site. After spending about 15 minutes trying to overcome my fear of heights and having been assured by a door keeper of the fabulous acoustics, I decided to keep positive & enjoy the evening. Even trying to overlook the fact that I couldn't often determine from that height who was actually singing, I closed my eyes to just listen. This did not work either with the exception of the chorus & a couple of the male performers, Porgy being one, I could not hear the singers. The orchestra over performed them. Therefore, I would say fair based on the venue, not the performers.

Fair to average. The opera production falls short of the musical play.

    Amazing, Gorgeous Production!!

by Freespirit2009 on 3/3/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

The Atlanta Opera production of "Porgy and Bess" was spectacular in every way!! All the singers had gloriously gorgeous voices, including the great chorus. The set design, with the new technology, was fantastic, and really enhanced the production. The main characters - Bess, Porgy, Clara, Serena, Sportin Life, Crown - were just phenomenal. The duets between Porgy and Bess gave me chills. And tears. I cannot express in words how brilliant this production is. I knew it would be great - but it far surpassed the high expectations I had. Don't miss this production!! (Though I do think it's sold out.)

Outstanding Experience Seeing Porgy & Bess

by Anonymous on 2/28/11Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

The show was well worth the money. The story evoked all levels of emotions from: sadness, joy, happiness, anger, and pity. The opera, Porgy & Bess was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and I won't ever forgot it. The only complaint that I had was the acoustics was terrible and if it weren't for the tele-promter translating the singing you would have to strain to hear the performers sing. I don't think that it should matter where you sit in the theater, the volume level should resonate throughout. Other than that initial issue, the entire production was wonderful. I went to the opera with a new friend from church and an old college mate of mine, and it was great making connections in an absolutely breathtaking venue. If there are any more seats and you haven't decided on whether or not to go it is worth seeing. You will definitely get your monies worth. The show was truly AMAZING! Luciann
