So very beautiful-the music sweeps you away! Powerful!
This production of Aida was spectacular. The Atlanta Opera put on quite a show.
The cast of Atlanta Opera's AIDA was spectacular. I was entranced from the opening lines of the overture to the rousing applause of the audience during curtain call. I would recommend this performance and any other Atlanta Opera performance to everyone!
I was very impressed with the quality of the leading performers in this production, Mary Elizabeth Williams – AIDA, Elizabeth Bishop – Amneris, and Antonello Palombi – Radames gave us a world class experience. The scope of the production, a caste of over 200 was also impressive. Bravo to the Atlanta Opera!!
I have to start by saying that I really like the Atlanta Opera company; however, like most smaller companies they have their hits and misses. Aida was one of the misses. It is really too big of a show to be successfully mounted by a small company. To be effective, Aida needs to be sung and staged like a Cecil B DeMille technicolor extravaganza. The performance last night lacked the sense of grand opera that Aida requires. Nice try but far from a home run.
A few tears ago I had the pleasure of experiencing AIDA the stage play in New York. This was the Tim Rice Elton John Production. It was great. I was curious to see how the Atlanta Opera production which of course is an opera compared and I was amazed at how good it was. The show was a really fantastic expereance and I would recommend seeing it.
Beautiful staging and costuming! Sound was great! We were in the very last row of the orchestra section and could hear very clearly. There was a last minute substitute for Aida which may have explained a little of the "awkwardness" that seemed to occur at times between characters. Main complaint: poor coordination of the super-titles. Hopefully that will be corrected in later performances.
This was heartrending, tear-jerking Verdi at his finest! The singers were terrific, especially Intra Thomas who sang on a moment's notice. The orchestra under Maestro Levi was truly excellent and performed on the level with any MET production I've heard. Levi kept things dramatically intense yet followed the singers and balanced the orchestra with them perfectly. The packed house seemed to enjoy it all immensely. This company deserves to grow!!!
It was our first time in the hall. The woodwinds and brass projected well, but the strings sounded small in comparison. I can only assume it is a function of the acoustic in the pit. We were very impressed that Maestro Levi conducted from memory. The flute and oboe solos were achingly beautiful. The harp should be placed facing out, towards the audience, between the basses and the woodwinds, instead of being hidden at the back of the violin section. The triumphal march was less than triumphal in its staging. Even smaller regional opera companies splurge and hire an elephant. We expected something much grander. The dancers were a delight. Their movements were supple and athletic, and at the same time, graceful. The angular movements in their choreography reminded the us of Egyptian paintings. Bravi! The Aida and the Radames were a good pairing, both physically and musically. We felt that the entire cast was excellent. In all, the production was a feast for the eyes and ears. Good opera!
I would recommend that you go to an opera at least once in your life...it really is beautiful!
The opera, Orfeo & Euridice, was nice but I quickly tired of the main male character (David Daniels, who played Orfeo) because he sang in a falsetto the whole performance. At first I assumed it was because he was grieving his dead wife, and our voices tend to go high when we cry, but then when he was able to reunite with her and find joy again, he still sang the same way. Almost all the characters were women, so there were almost none of the nice low male voices for balance. When Orfeo and Euridice would sing, my husband and I often couldn't tell which voice belonged to who! The audience loved him, though. I guess I'm not sophisticated enough to recognize what must have been an outstanding performance!
very enjoyable; the theater is very nice, you can hear everything even on top, the performance was done very very well
It was just awesome, the theater is gorgeous but the sits are a little uncomfortable, regardless of that, the music was amazing, and the artist performance was top level, the translation on the top of the platform was formidable, quite an experience, the only thing was that I was expecting it to be a little longer, or I just enjoyed it too much that time just went too fast, but is a great story, fully recomendable!
We arrived 3 minutes after opening. They were singing the national anthem. They had not begun the opera. We were refused entry into the theatre and told we could watch a tape of the opera and sit by the concession stand. We would have to wait there for 66 minutes until the first intermission. Our tickets were more than $100 per person. I spoke with the director of marketing who informed us that it is the policy of the Atlanta OPera to not allow any late seating. There is nothing on the ticket or in the fine print that states this policy. Despite having multiple levels with rear doors, there is nothing set up for late arrivals to sit in the rear of the theatre and view the opera. They need to have something else arranged much like the Atlanta Symphony has at Woodruff Hall. We left and are demanding a refund.
I found the play very entertaining and delightful to watch. The singers were excellent with that Leah Partridge just unbelievable in her role and with her voice. A great way to end the week. I can guarentee another return to hear Ms. Partridge in another play.
Wonderful staging. Lovely voices. Engaging performances. My husband, thirteen-year-old granddaughter and I all enjoyed it.
First opera I have ever attended and I am "hooked" and will be attending frequently. The production was so professionally done and the vocals were awesome. Each character portrayed their role in an outstanding way. The Cobb Energy Center is absolutely beautiful.
