  • Awesome, But . . . .

by Selliott on 7/12/09Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

. . . The Allman Brothers Band / Doobie Brothers concert was awesome just in the fact that we can still (after 40 years) still see these guys play live. BUT . . . as seems to be true with many of these older band tours . . . the enthusiasm is just lacking. The fans were rockin' but the bands did not return the energy. Yes, the music was great. Yes, the song selection was great. Still, they did little to acknowledge the energy of the crowd, let alone match it. The reason to attend a live performance is to "feel" the music. When the band isolates from the audience, well . . . might as well listen to the CD, huh? As for the venue, a summer concert at the Greek is awesome out under the stars. But, the Greek absolutely needs to upgrade the sound system. The speakers just cannot hold the high sustained notes of a good rock band. The higher up the fret board, the more static and screech from the speakers. My sound system at home does a much better job. Hope they will invest in this necessary upgrade. In the meantime, their performers won't sound as good as they really are.

  • Doobies rock, Allmans ROLL!

by suzeee on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was great, the sound was excellent, and it was fairly easy to get in & out, so no complaints about the setting. This concert was as good as any I have EVER been to, anywhere. The Doobies were as good as their Reunion concert at the Sports Arena, 20 years ago, (minus Michael McDonald). They sounded great, and the playing was very tight. The new stuff they did was also good, and it looked like they had a lot of fun being in the venue. The Allmans are one of my favorite LIVE in concert bands of all time, and they did not disappoint. They still sound amazing, can play together so smooth it is such a delight. For the fans looking to hear all their old "hits" they gave us a few, for old times sake, but they just love to jam.

  • special night!!

    by steveo5156 on 7/12/09Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I saw two great bands on a beautiful night outdoors at the Greek Theatre. The Doobie Bros. played a solid set with all their hits. They had the crowd on their feet dancing. The Allman Bros. were the headliners for their 50th anniversary tour, and they sounded better than ever. With suprise guests Bruce Willis, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers helping out, this made for a very special night! We loved it!

  • Allman Brothers rock the greek!

by fasterwego on 7/12/09Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I've always wanted to see the Allman Brothers Band live and so when I saw they were coming to Los Angeles this past May I didn't hesitate buying tickets. The Doobie Brothers opening for ABB was just icing on the cake! The Greek Theatre was a beautiful place to see a concert, and there was plenty of room to move around and dance. The Doobie Brothers took the stage right on time and launched into several of their classics. I was hoping to hear two songs in particular from them that night and they didn't disappoint doing a great version of "Blackwater" and "Long Train Runnin'" They also played a couple new songs which were really good too. Their playing was really tight and they sounded great! Overall a great warm-up to the evening. After a brief break the ABB took the stage and immediately started rocking! I had just seen Warren Haynes with The Dead two weeks or so before, so I was excited to see him really explore the bluesy side of his playing. The band was sounding great, and Greg Allman's voice still sounds wonderful and soulful. The back and forth guitar work of Haynes and Derek Trucks was amazing. Derek Trucks is definitely the real deal! They played a nice collection of their classics, though the best for me was probably a great version of "Whipping Post." It was a wonderful night of music and I would absolutely encourage anyone to go see them.

  • Allman and Doobie Brothers band

by chuckibaby76 on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 2 out of 5

Allman Brothers Band Would have been alright but they did not play much of the tunes that I was looking forward to.Alot of what they played were new stuff that didnot appeal to me. Doobie Brothers Band Was much better and they played the tunes that people wanted to hear. Harrahs Open Theater Sucks!!! no crowd control !!! They place me in the Handicap section which was worthless bec.people kept walking in front of the section and could not enjoy the concert. This is the last time I would attend such a venue!!!!!

by brindy on 7/12/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The Fox theatre in Oakland is an awesome venue. The Allman brothers were great. How can you miss when you add Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and that great drummer to the originals.

  • Fun show for past songs and artists

by oldtimer73 on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 3 out of 5

Doobie Bros killed it and great job. Very lively and many great tunes. Allman Bros shoud have introduced the band members. Not sure everyone knew or appreciated Derek Trucks' appearance. Both bands did not have the Bass miked. Could not hear bass lines in the rhythm section. Ddi not stay for the last two songs of the Allman Bros. Long drawn out jazz instrumental extended the concert to 1:30 AM. Glad we went, but not blown away.

  • Allman Bros big disappointment

by MrHack on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 1 out of 5

Doobies were just what we expected - fun, playng all their big tunes. Allman Brothers stunk. First of all, it was Allman Brother - only Greg. Second, all they did was jam. No songs. Half the audience left by the middle of their set. We walked out about then. First time EVER i have left a concert. As my friend noted - "OK, we believe you can play guitar. Now play a song!"

  • doobies, allmans as good as back in the day

by mar9900 on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 4 out of 5

both these bands gave a great show, certainly worth the ticket price considering the prices we pay for washed-up has-beens. in this case, neither band is in that category. they are as tight as ever, especially the allmans, with derek trucks on slide guitar, these guys can crank out the blues, country-rock sound. after playing together all these years, they make it look natural and easy.they omitted a few of my favorite tunes on this particular evening, but nonetheless, every song was a treasure, especially the'eat a peach" selections. i will always have the alert out for the allmans in the future. see either one of these great acts, not for nastalgia or to bring back memories, but to hear real pros at their best.

  • Allmans Brothers and good friends Rocked the Greek

    by BigBossMan322 on 7/12/09Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to a number of concerts and visited many venues. But there is really nothing quite as memorable as the Greek Theatre on a warm Southern California night. The crowd was represented by all age groups. Parents brought their children as well as Grandparents. All the different generations attending that night had the one common thread, they all seemed to belong there. The Doobie Brothers opened and performed like they were a young, but well seasoned Rock band. The energy they pumped out was incredible. The night was to explode later in a smooth Southern Rock fountain of Hospitality when the Allmans Brothers made their appearance. From the beginning, the music just flowed off the stage and into the crowd. With the two lead guitars switching back and forth without missing a lick. And when they're very good friend, Bruce Willis was invited on stage, he added to the already outstanding music by pulling out a Harmonica and ripping into song after song, like he was an original member. Powerful and energized would be the only way to describe his attribute to the already great performance. But how would Mr. Allmans possibly add to this one of a kind Gig? He invites his other close friends, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on stage! What a night. If the Greek had a roof, it would have come down that night. That was a once in a lifetime concert. I feel for those who missed it.

  • Allman Bros. keep on rockin

by deecee on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 4 out of 5

of course, The Allman Bros. rocked. The father of all jam bands was in great form, at times bluesy and at other times very jazzy. The dueling guitars, Gregs gravelly vocals and a great percussion section. The Doobies not quite as good. More nostalgic than anything, while the Allman's music, still vital, stand's the test of time. The Rincon Casino venue. I was very dissapointed. It seemed like the first concert that they had ever put on. Total lack of security. Worse, were the few number of porta-potties, with long lines. Approx. 45 min wait. But any sacrifice is worth seeing the Allman Bros. We never know how much longer Greg will keep the band touring. Warren and Derek are incredible guitarists. Lets hope these guys keep on rockin for many more years

  • Allman Brothers/Doobie Brothers 5/22/09

by QueensDebo on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 4 out of 5

The Doobie Brothers were disappointing. Not their greatest show. I have seen them in the past and they were much better. However, although Gregg Allman's voice wasn't the greatest during the show, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes shined like diamonds in the sky. It was a nice touch having Susan Tedeschi come out and playing a song with the band. Overall, nice venue. Allman Brothers Band rocked.

  • Allman/Doobies

by Drapeguy on 7/12/09Harrah's Rincon Casino - Open Sky Theater - Valley CenterRating: 3 out of 5

The Doobie Brothers were the opening band and they played like the main event. The energy and the synergy of the band was awesome. It made the event worth coming to. The Allman brothers on the other hand just seemed one man short to me without Duane allman. It just did not have the vocal qualities I remembered and yearned for. The music was technically excellent. It just did not sound the same.

  • Allman Bros Band

by Seeker on 7/12/09Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I usually don't write reviews, but I want to share my experience and hope that somehow it gets back to the band. First off the so called "light show" was annoying/irritating. The spots lights were shining out into the audience and were blinding. I'm really not sure who the lead guitarist were, but there rendition of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was amateurish. I don't know how they choose the song list, but they choose to do jam sessions on most songs which I guess they seemed to enjoy, but did not play favorites like Rambling Man or Jessica. I probably won't be spending the money to see them again. This was my third time and I enjoyed the concerts of the past. Overall of course I had a good time. It was the Greek and live music.
