I go frequently to New York, but had not seen the "Addams Family" there because of the mixed reviews. However, I decided to see the touring production because it was in my "backyard" and the prices were not "New York" prices. I took my 85 year old father with me.
First of all, the production values for a touring company are outstanding - great sets, costumes, lighting and a great group of musicians. And the actors were top-notch; they all seemed to be having a great time onstage. The audience was quite responsive - everyone around me was laughing and clapping thoughout the show, and I think the cast responded to the audience's energy.
I had seen Douglas Sills in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in New York and thought he had done a great job then. But in the role of Gomez, he really had opportunity to shine. He was plain terrific. Sara Gettelfinger as Morticia was also good, but could have had a bit more sultry and mysterious. The other actors playing Fester, Wednesday, Puglsey, Lurch, Grandma and the fiance and in-laws were all pros, Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley and the mother-in-law had particularly effective singing styles.
The only complaint was that Act Two was not as solid as Act One. The plot was a bit thin, but overall, it was still fun and never boring. Fester's love song to the moon was charming.
I would recommend anyone to see this touring show if you are looking for a good, solid night of fun at the theatre.
