Tennessee Volunteers Football History
The University of Tennessee first fielded a varsity football team in 1891 and became a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Robert Neyland was a major architect both literally and figuratively in the Volunteers' success in the 20th century and beyond. A brigadier general during World War II, Neyland coached Tennessee from 1926 to 1934, 1936 to 1940 and 1946 to 1952, leading the Vols to four national championships, five SEC championships and two Southern Conference championships. Neyland is not only the namesake of Tennessee's stadium – his input in renovating the field's infrastructure has been the basis for every major phase of renovation since the 1960s.
Johnny Majors was a star at halfback for Tennessee in the '50s, and after leading Pitt to a national championship in 1976, returned to Knoxville as a coach from 1977 to 1992. Phillip Fulmer then went on to lead the Volunteers to a BCS National Championship in 1998, as quarterback Tee Martin and wide receiver Peerless Price helped defeat Florida State, 23-16, in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl to cap off an undefeated season. The Volunteers have had some of the greatest football players of all time suit up for them, including defensive end Reggie White from 1980 to 1983 and quarterback Peyton Manning from 1994 to 1997, as well as Derek Barnett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Alvin Kamara.
While the Tennessee-Alabama game is not always played on the "Third Saturday of October," the name is synonymous with one of the most storied rivalries in the SEC. Tennessee also has historic rivalries against the University of Kentucky, University of Florida and in-state Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt.

Nashville and Tennessee Vols football! Thanks Ticketmaster for a perfect experience!!
Great venue but the time made it extremely hot. A record attendance was had and the next game should be later in the year to avoid heat exposure. Thanks for a great experience Ticketmaster
Great college game. 11 am start time not good for end of August, beginning of September. Very hot!
I didn't expect to be so uncomfortably hot in the stadium. Game was good otherwise. Glad Nico got some play time.
Great game to attend in Nashville Tennessee. New attendance record for Nissan stadium for a college game. Vols dominated the Virginia Cavilers. Ticketmaster process was seamless and very easy to utilize. I wish al my process in life were this easy to complete. Go VOLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We really enjoyed the Club Level. Worth every penny.
Was great easy access no hassle great game had no problem getting in I had two tickets and used them off my phone
The prices for the food was very crazy. They are going to find ways to pay for this new stadium in every way.
Parking easier than Titans game even with more people! Lots of venues. and vendors! Nice to provide a venue where people who don’t normally attend can, (overpriced tickets though)but absolutely NOTHING beats Neyland Stadium! We attend all the games but had lots of out of town friends come to Nashville which made it nice . GBO🧡
We had the BEST time and can't wait to watch our VOLS play again next weekend!
Atmosphere was amazing, both teams had support, and the Vols got the W!
Nice game, the UT Band did an excellent job, the 11 am start times, was an opportunity to spot light the Team and the City. The Nashville Sports Council should be ashamed to charge for coke refills on a 93 degree day. The Titans do not charge for Coke refills on any day. I hope that extra money you charged for the Coke refills goes to giving you some common sense.
Excellent experience. I have been to several Titans games and the pregame and game experience is terrible. This was the opposite good job go vols.
Great tickets! Ticketmaster came thru after a competitor failed to secure seats and almost made me cancel my trip to Knoxville. Great game!
The weather was brutal but the game and experience of being with all my family in Neyland Stadium was awesome 🧡🧡🧡
University of Tennessee Football is the best in college sports experience. Neyland Stadium rocks with excitement. The entire State of Tennessee is all in for Rocky Top
I’ve been coming here since i was a kid, best environment, best people, best experience.
Go Big Orange! The fans, the field, the band, and the football team are all the best you can experience. Neyland is loud and exciting! You won’t regret coming to any event here. Vols by fiddy!!!
My boyfriend and I had a fabulous time. The atmosphere, the food, all of the fans dressed in orange and rooting for the Tn Vols the night before Halloween. Nightmare in Neyland was a blast!
Vol walk, vol village and the game was so good! Neyland rocks and so do the vols!!
