Tennessee Volunteers Football History

The University of Tennessee first fielded a varsity football team in 1891 and became a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Robert Neyland was a major architect both literally and figuratively in the Volunteers' success in the 20th century and beyond. A brigadier general during World War II, Neyland coached Tennessee from 1926 to 1934, 1936 to 1940 and 1946 to 1952, leading the Vols to four national championships, five SEC championships and two Southern Conference championships. Neyland is not only the namesake of Tennessee's stadium – his input in renovating the field's infrastructure has been the basis for every major phase of renovation since the 1960s.

Johnny Majors was a star at halfback for Tennessee in the '50s, and after leading Pitt to a national championship in 1976, returned to Knoxville as a coach from 1977 to 1992. Phillip Fulmer then went on to lead the Volunteers to a BCS National Championship in 1998, as quarterback Tee Martin and wide receiver Peerless Price helped defeat Florida State, 23-16, in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl to cap off an undefeated season. The Volunteers have had some of the greatest football players of all time suit up for them, including defensive end Reggie White from 1980 to 1983 and quarterback Peyton Manning from 1994 to 1997, as well as Derek Barnett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Alvin Kamara.

While the Tennessee-Alabama game is not always played on the "Third Saturday of October," the name is synonymous with one of the most storied rivalries in the SEC. Tennessee also has historic rivalries against the University of Kentucky, University of Florida and in-state Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt.

  • Not very enjoyable

by LG on 4/15/25Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

The Orange-White game wasn’t much fun to watch because, aside from the actual scrimmage, we never knew what was happening on the field. A one page schedule of events would have made an enormous difference.

by Old dog on 10/15/24Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 4 out of 5

A hotly contested game by two teams that had trouble deciding to win. It was a great contest. Tennessee has some big issues this year

by Christin on 11/28/23Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I went home for the holidays and much about the area has changed, but the Vols game and singing Rocky Top felt exactly the same. Go Vols!

  • GREAT GAME

by UT GAL on 10/3/23Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

INCREDIBLE GAME. UT FANS WERE SO LOUD. UT PLAYERS PLAYED AS A TEAM; WORKING HELPING EACH OTHER. I HAVE BEEN GOING TO UT GAMES SINCE 1981. THIS WAS A GAME I WILL CHERISH.

  • Rocky Top

    by J67 on 10/3/23Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

If you have never experienced a football game in Neyland Stadium put it on your bucket list. Something about singing Rocky Top with 100,000 screaming fans gets your blood flowing. Yes it’s a big crowd but don’t let that deter you.

  • ut vs apsu

by tim on 9/12/23Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Moved my ticket to Google Wallet and had no problem at the gate for the UT vs APSU football game.

  • Money spent better elsewhere

by Rocky on 9/12/23Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

Almost impossible to get to the seats in D through the tunnel from Gate 24. I am of average weight, but the seating space was tiny. Great view from the seats, but you had to maneuver by 12 people in each direction to get in or out. The game delay was inexcusable. No possible way for that crowd to find shelter. Paid $300 to watch 2 weak teams. Last game of the season for me.

  • Great seats @ Nissan Stadium to watch the Vols!

by BAintheBORO on 9/8/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We used 335/F seats 3-5. These seats are on the 50 yard line, you have a terrific view of the entire game. It was VERY sunny and hot in September. These seats back up against a wall - Pros: Noone behind you - you can stand up or sit on the seats or stand in the seats with no issue - HUGE Pro: The game started at 11am. By halftime, we were mostly in the shade. This was a huge bonus. My friend has Titans PSLs in this row and loves them. I'd sit here anytime.

  • Great experience.

by Bill on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Have attended most of the Titans games being a legacy PSL holder and really enjoy the Titan experience, the Vols are a whole unique and different catagory, loved being part of Vol nation this game.

  • VOLS Rocked Nissan

by PhilipVols on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Our Tennessee Vols Rocked Nissan Stadium in Nashville! Largest crowd ever in the history of Nissan Stadium! Great Win UT 49 vs VA 13.

  • Awesome Experience

by Tngirl on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed Nashville hospitality, enjoyed the football game, was very surprised there was no food or drinks for sale outside the stadium, unless I didn't see them. The Nissan stadium really needs to fix the wifi issue, it was impossible to open or send anything. Other wise great day!

  • Keep home games at Neyland

by John on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 2 out of 5

I’ve been to many sporting events & concerts at all types of venues. This was worst management of traffic around a stadium/venue I’ve ever experienced. Nashville should be better than that. Getting into stadium was also difficult. It was as though the stadium was not prepared for the crowd. Hope UT keeps Home games at Neyland in future.

  • Big Orange

by Tenn on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT SERVICE!!!!!!!

  • PA system broken?

by nancy on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 2 out of 5

We could not hear anything over the PA system. I am not sure if it was a poor job by the person announcing or if the system was not working but it was very frustrating

  • Great day, except for traffic control!!!

by VOLS in Nissan Stadium on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Ticketing process was super easy. All of the in-stadium activities including the game were great! However, Nashville did a terrible job of traffic control!! I have never been to a game where driving to my reserved parking spot was an hour and a half headache - with the stadium insite. Leaving with 10 minutes on the clock, found the traffic issue to be just as bad.

  • overall, it was fun

by Vol Fan on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - NashvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Main issue was not being able to transfer parking pass until late the night before the game.
