Tennessee Volunteers Football History

The University of Tennessee first fielded a varsity football team in 1891 and became a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Robert Neyland was a major architect both literally and figuratively in the Volunteers' success in the 20th century and beyond. A brigadier general during World War II, Neyland coached Tennessee from 1926 to 1934, 1936 to 1940 and 1946 to 1952, leading the Vols to four national championships, five SEC championships and two Southern Conference championships. Neyland is not only the namesake of Tennessee's stadium – his input in renovating the field's infrastructure has been the basis for every major phase of renovation since the 1960s.

Johnny Majors was a star at halfback for Tennessee in the '50s, and after leading Pitt to a national championship in 1976, returned to Knoxville as a coach from 1977 to 1992. Phillip Fulmer then went on to lead the Volunteers to a BCS National Championship in 1998, as quarterback Tee Martin and wide receiver Peerless Price helped defeat Florida State, 23-16, in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl to cap off an undefeated season. The Volunteers have had some of the greatest football players of all time suit up for them, including defensive end Reggie White from 1980 to 1983 and quarterback Peyton Manning from 1994 to 1997, as well as Derek Barnett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Alvin Kamara.

While the Tennessee-Alabama game is not always played on the "Third Saturday of October," the name is synonymous with one of the most storied rivalries in the SEC. Tennessee also has historic rivalries against the University of Kentucky, University of Florida and in-state Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt.

College football is the best way to spend a Saturday! It’s not just a game it’s an event! The food, fans and of course the football but don’t forget the band and cheerleaders! I’ve made many memories with my wife and kids at these games!

  • Disappointed in Neyland stadium

by Asmcpa on 11/1/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 1 out of 5

The parking was impossible and too far from the stadium. And the price was ridiculous- $40. Once we got to the stadium the food we ordered was cold and the bathrooms were like an elementary school. I could see over top the stall when I stood up. I will never go back there again.

  • Game of the Century

Im a vol alum, so i knew a lot on the front end. But if you're going to your first football game, heres what you need to know. 1) download your tickets into google pay or some ap you can access them without wireless. Once 100,000 of your closest friends plus about 10,000 students are all in one small area, you arent getting a wireless signal. So download your tickets early. 2) theres no parking on campus unless youre a donor and season ticket holder with a parking pass. So download parking maps and plan to walk up to 2.5-3 miles to the stadium from a downtown garage. If you dont want to walk many hotels offer shuttles or you can Uber. But be prepared for a lot of waiting after the game. 3) Many sections of Neyland have not been renovated. Be prepared to sit in a tight space on old school benches and be prepared for people to be in your personal space when they get up to go to the concourses. 4) we love to stand for the Vols. Youre probably not going to get to comfortably sit and watch the game. You might have to stand up to see. 5) be prepared for it to be LOUD. We pride ourselves on making the home of the vols the most intimidating and loudest stadium for the opponents, especially Florida, Alabama, Georgia, any team coached by Lane Kiffin, eventually Texas, and any SEC school that particularly deserves it in a given season. So somebody is going to be very near you crazy screaming. Just deal with it. 6) plan to enter the stadium no less than 1 hour before kickoff. You absolutely do not want to miss pregame. The game on September 24, 2022 was amazing! It was loud, the band was on it and Neyland was electric. It was worth every penny for the experience. Go vols

I had a couple of small issues with the electronic ticketing but I believe it was the stadium workers definitely not the system.

  • Disappointed

by TS on 9/20/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

School spirit and crowd enthusiasm was terrific. However, getting into the stadium and leaving the stadium was extremely frustrating. The school only allows you to utilize tickets that are livestreamed to your phone from ticketmaster. You cannot show a screenshot of the tickets and cannot use printed tickets. The stadium has terrible cell phone reception and you are unable to log in to ticketmaster to show your tickets. Hundreds of people including my family were told we have to wait for a manager to solve our problem and we missed the beginning of the game. After leaving the game, the police did a horrible job in directing traffic and actually created huge traffic jams. It took over an hour and a 1/2 to go 5 blocks from the stadium. Hopefully someone in management reads this review and actually does something about the cell phone reception in the area or changes the policy. Additionally, the police need better leadership in traffic control.

  • Great

by Better Call Vol on 9/20/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Very convenient. Would like the option to have paper tickets as a backup as I do have concerns about Wifi and my phone charge running out after a day of tailgating.

  • UT vs Akron game

by Tamlyn on 9/20/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

It was great! The tickemaster app worked perfectly for scanning my tickets. Everything went smoothly. We had such a good time. There's nothing like a UT football game in person!

  • Any day in Neyland stadium is a blessing.

by Svaughn on 9/4/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Home opener for football team. Great seats 35 yard line 44 rows up. Only weird thing, seats 1 and 2 are in middle of the row. That seems odd to us. Thanks Ticketmaster and the university of Tennessee. Seem less transaction.

  • Quick and Easy

by VFLtwirl on 9/4/22Neyland Stadium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Having the digital ticket was super quick once you got up to the scanner. The only problem was the other fans who didn’t have their ticket downloaded or didn’t know how to scan their ticket. It made the lines very long. But once everyone knows what they’re doing, it works great
