Hailing from Nigeria, singer, songwriter and producer Tems (real name Temilade Openiyi) blends West African alté and neo-soul. She grew up heavily influenced by a mix of Nigerian and Western music, having spunDestiny's Child, Lil Wayne and Aaliyah on her Walkman when growing up. But at the age of 15, she stopped listening to music all together to find her own sound and hone her craft.
The first introduction to her smooth mix of reggae, soul and R&B was 2018's 'Mr Rebel', which cemented Tems firmly as one to watch. Each single that's followed, from the alt-R&B dance groove of 'Damages' to 'Crazy Tings'' old-school reggae throwback, has shown her genre-ignoring, reinventing approach to music. Her most recent EP 'If Orange Was A Place' glides between softer emotional rawness in 'Found', and up-tempo alté fun with 'Replay's playful horn section.
As well as her own releases, she's featured on several high-profile collaborationsthat led her to be listed in Barack Obama's favourite music of 2020.She teamed up with afrobeats superstar WizKid for his sensual track 'Essence', the first Nigerian song ever to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and earnt her a Grammy nomination. She also joined Drake for 'Fountains', which skips around piano-based afrobeats instrumentation, and Khalid and Disclosure for their electro-R&B hit 'Know Your Worth'.

I bought the ticket when they first went on sale and forgot about it until Ticketmaster started sending me "get ready"notifications (thank you to them!!). The venue was gorgeous and actually quite spacious for a general admission standing situation. I breezed through the entrance line and showed my saved ticket in my digital wallet. I checked out the merch and the bar, then stood on the floor listening to the opening act and enjoying the energy of the people around me. Tems was gorgeous as always and sounded like an angel! I'm glad I got to see her at a sold-out show. I'll definitely frequent The Anthem in the future—I absolutely love a small, intimate venue.
I had a time! Tems looked and sounded amazing. Even though I wish the show was longer, it was hands down one of the best shows I've been too. I can't wait to see her again. Hopefully Soon!!
She sounded and looked amazing. She put on a great show, energetic, and engaged with the audience throughout. I recommend seeing her LIVE.
The concert started promptly at 8 PM! I purchased general admission (standing room only). I probably won’t ever do that again, I’m almost 30.. so my back started hurting/burning around the 1 hour mark 😂. She had an amazing opener who preformed from 8 PM to about 8:45. She performed about 6 songs. After, we waited about 30 mins! Tems came on around 9:15 PM!!!! She was amazing, her voice was beautiful, outfit was amazing, everything was 10/10!!!!! She admitted that she was feeling under the weather BUT I wouldn’t have known she performed 100%!!! She interacted with the audience, she was just lovely!!!! She performed for about an hour and 45 mins! Came on around 9:15 and the concert ended around 10:30-10:45!!!!! I loved it, and can’t wait to see her again.
Definitely worth the cost of admission and more. Thank you for stopping in DC
Her voice is just sooo beautiful! I have been waiting to see her live ever since she dropped her first song. She told us she had a cold and was going to try her best to give us a good performance, and she most definitely delivered. Her outfit was amazing, the hair was giving, her band had such good energy, and the opener was on par with Tems. An all around amazing experience
The anthem is spacious and has tons of bars. In the future, I would definitely hop on the presales ASAP to secure a seat because the pit is not a vibe anymore. But TEMS is WORTH IT!
Watching Tems live was a dream come true! I’ve been listening to her for years now, and her voice is just as amazing in person. And she was feeling under the weather and still performed amazingly. She was engaged with the audience and was just a beautiful amazing gem I can’t get enough!
Pretty great experience. She should been in a bigger venue for sure.
OMG!!!!! Show was 10/10!!!!! Tems gave us 1 hr and 20 minutes of FULL BLOWN SINGING!!!!!! She sounded so amazing…you would have thought the radio was on full blast! Tems needs no auto tune because she sounds BETTER than the radio!!!!! Her mic was ON all night!!!She was so interactive with us…. I’ve never heard a crowd cheer so loud! Tems please come back because my daughter and I enjoyed the show from BEGINNING TO END! Her opener was amazing as well! I’ve been to over 6 concerts this year and this by far was the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tems was amazing and beautiful! Sounded beautiful and angelic even with a cold! Would def see her again. It was my first concert experience and was very memorable.
You can’t take transit or walk, so you pretty much have to drive (and pay $20 for parking). When I got in I went to the bar and ordered a double with well spirits and they charged me $35 for the one drink. Once I got in the venue there was really no good view and nowhere to stand. The room is long and flat and rectangular so you’re kinda guaranteed to just be looking at the back of someone’s head the whole show. Tems was great, loved her set. But I’ll definitely avoid this venue forever.
The best concert I’ve been to in a while….. and I go to A LOT of concerts. She’s simply amazing!
Wow Tems you are a goddess, your voice is immaculate! This was such a beautiful concert, it was very intimate, she sang the entire time without breaks! True talent, the stage, the band and the background singers were outstanding as well. Highly recommend and I look forward to seeing her again and again! Let’s also mention that Naomi Sharon also did an outstanding job as an opener!
Loved Tems, she put on an amazing show! The venue was perfect
Tems sounded amazing live and had the best energy. The setlist was golden:
Tems was amazing! She gave everything she neeeded to give and more. Vocals were impeccable! She sounds just like her album! It was an amazing experience and I was so glad I went! The only thing was the venue was all standing, for 4ish hours I got there at 6:40 and concert started on time at 8 with the opener and ended around 10:30. I prefer venues that have seats. Everything was on time/timely, love that for Tems!! Parking was $20, just took a while to leave because there was so many of us.
Easy smooth entrance to the venue, easy to get drinks, the show started ON TIME, the opener Naomi Sharon was a vibe too. Then Tems came on and it was the best concert I've been to this year EASILYYYYYY! WHAT A PERFORMANCE! 10/10
Tems was absolutely divine! She put on an amazing performance and sang all of her hits I would definitely see her in concert again. What I did not like is the fact that I paid for a fast lane ticket so I could be in the pit and see her up close. Upon entering I was told that the pit was general admission but I needed a wristband to get in which I was not given when I went through security. I ended having to sit far back because by the time I could find out where to get my wristband the pit had completely filled up. I was pissed. What was the point of the fast lane ticket. The Fillmore needs to fix that.
