About

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at Everbank Stadium

Jacksonville is the largest and most populous city in Florida, and is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious bowl games in college football. Each year, one of the best teams in the Southeastern Conference takes on a top team from the Big Ten Conference or the Atlantic Coast Conference in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. The Gator Bowl is held at Everbank Stadium, which opened as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in 1995 and currently holds 67,184 for Jacksonville Jaguars games and up to 82,000 for bowl games and the annual Georgia-Florida game.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl History

The inaugural Gator Bowl took place on January 1, 1946, as a near-capacity crowd of 7,362 saw Wake Forest defeat South Carolina 26-14. Due to popular demand, Fairfield Stadium was soon expanded and renamed Gator Bowl Stadium, after the venue's marquee event. The Gator Bowl has been played on the same site since its inception, with the exception of the December 1994 game held at Gainesville while the original Gator Bowl Stadium was being demolished and rebuilt. From 2015 to 2017, the game was known simply as the TaxSlayer Bowl, but its original name was reintroduced for the 2018 edition.

The most infamous moment by far in Gator Bowl history took place in 1978, when Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes punched Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman after the latter made a game-clinching interception. The punch, and the subsequent firing of Hayes, overshadowed the Tigers' 17-15 upset of a Top 10 Buckeye team. The 1980 matchup is notable for having Hugh Green and the No. 3 ranked Pitt Panthers obliterate Heisman winner George Rogers and the South Carolina Gamecocks, 37-9. The December 31, 2018, Gator Bowl featured the Texas A&M Aggies scoring 45 unanswered points against North Carolina State in a 52-13 victory over the Wolfpack.

    Great Experience

by Weezie on 1/5/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Overall great experience, but lack of merchandise to purchase. Every stand was sold out of specific sizes early on. Need to take notes from Orlando, as we've attended 2 bowl games there and not once did they have a lack of merchandise.

    Kinda unorganized

    by D. S. on 1/4/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

We decided to do this since we were going to be in Florida on vacation. Bought the tickets before we knew the teams playing and bought tickets to the Touchdown Party before the game. We had to fight through the crowds we thought were in line to get in only to find out they were waiting on the team to go through. Finally got over to the gates and our line was barely moving. Turns out the security in our line was checking through everything individually. My husband had a pack of cigarettes in his pocket, no intention of smoking in the stadium, and he took them and threw them in the trash. We finally get through and up to the party and it was packed, the drink lines were huge, could have used a third drink area. Glad we went...now that's off our list.

    Step by step

by JaxSCfan on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Game was great. Wanted different outcome. Leaving the game escalators were not working so from the 400 level had to walk down steps step by step.

The Taxslayor Gator Bowl was a great experience. Parking was easy and relatively inexpensive. The concession stand lines were manageable. Good variety of food and drink. We will definitely be returning.

    Great time!!

by Angie D on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Had a wonderful day! We sat in the club seats and the new seats were super comfortable. My only request is I wish there had been more Notre Dame collateral/merchandise to purchase. I only seen a small table of two shirts and they were not attractive.

    Gator Bowl

by Rooster Chief on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Great experience from ticket purchase to walking out of the stadium. We had high seats but the video boards kept us close to the game. All staff were good. The venue was great! Next time consider better public notice on availability of parking around the stadium.

Not equipped to handle the crowds!

by Kelly C on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

The venue itself is beautiful…. views of the river and city are gorgeous. However, this stadium is not equipped to deal with large crowds. Bathrooms were small and had limited numbers of stalls. Food and merchandise vendors could not keep up with demand. Entering and exiting the stadium was a nightmare. At least one of the four gates was not opened, and I noticed as we left that it was chained and padlocked. That’s unsafe and surely against fire codes. I loved the game itself, but I don’t think I’ll be returning to this stadium.

    None

by none on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Was not aloud to take in my camera. We travel a lot - go to baseball games across the United States. Am ALWAYS permitted to take in this camera. I have scrapbooks filled with pictures from other bowl games - not this one. Had the same clear bag and was told it was to big. We literally had to return to our hotel and take the camera back and empty the clear bag. We had sweat shirts in the clear bag because once the sun would go down it would be cold. The entry clerks were on a "power" kick. They would not even allow us to take the empty eyeglass case in for the sun glasses my husband wore. IT WAS RIDICULOUS! AND IT WAS RUINED FOR US.

    Crowded :/

by Band Fan on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

The band needs more room at pep rallies! I felt so bad for the USC Colorguard at the gameday pep rally because they got shoved to the back and didn’t have room to spin!

    Great stadium

by Baby Jo on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

Had a great time at the stadium. Our seats were great. Didn’t really use any of the food services there as we had tailgating beforehand. Only complaint I really had was when it came to parking there were some issues staff standing around talking and not watching the traffic, and we had no idea where to go. When we got to the disabled parking, one person was showing one way when we’re so in the other which confused us and then the person that was showing us the correct way. Got a little aggravated and started saying some uncomplimentary things did not appreciate that at all but otherwise the stadium grounds going through security no issues at all.

    Stadium entry exit disaster

by ArtS on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

This is by far the worst venue imaginable when trying to enter and exit the stadium. Clearly they have few fans that come to jaguar games. Especially after the game they exits BLOCKED and we’re funneling thousands of people through very limited gate exit. If there would have been an emergency it would have spelled disaster. Employees did little to NOTHING to assist with people flow and the PARKING pass was an absolute waste of money. There were people walking around through traffic no control or assistance ZERO help by officials to exit even the parking lot. The construction equipment around the stadium walkways were also obstructive to flow. Going in was ok because NOT everyone arrives at the same time - the exit process — I’ve been to many college(with many more fans) and high school venues that could teach incompetent stadium managers how to efficiently manage people flow. Be assured WE WILL never return to this place for any event. Embarrassing for such a large city that made big bucks to have such absence of hospitality and employees who even cared about visitors.

    It was good

by wcrooster on 1/2/23TIAA Bank Field - Jacksonville

It was a fine game despite coming up short. With 12 players who played the last 2 games not play in the Gator Bowl including 10 starters made it a very difficult accomplishment in beating ND. SC played their hearts but the lack of numbers caught up with SC . Just was not enough.
