About

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at Everbank Stadium

Jacksonville is the largest and most populous city in Florida, and is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious bowl games in college football. Each year, one of the best teams in the Southeastern Conference takes on a top team from the Big Ten Conference or the Atlantic Coast Conference in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. The Gator Bowl is held at Everbank Stadium, which opened as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in 1995 and currently holds 67,184 for Jacksonville Jaguars games and up to 82,000 for bowl games and the annual Georgia-Florida game.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl History

The inaugural Gator Bowl took place on January 1, 1946, as a near-capacity crowd of 7,362 saw Wake Forest defeat South Carolina 26-14. Due to popular demand, Fairfield Stadium was soon expanded and renamed Gator Bowl Stadium, after the venue's marquee event. The Gator Bowl has been played on the same site since its inception, with the exception of the December 1994 game held at Gainesville while the original Gator Bowl Stadium was being demolished and rebuilt. From 2015 to 2017, the game was known simply as the TaxSlayer Bowl, but its original name was reintroduced for the 2018 edition.

The most infamous moment by far in Gator Bowl history took place in 1978, when Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes punched Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman after the latter made a game-clinching interception. The punch, and the subsequent firing of Hayes, overshadowed the Tigers' 17-15 upset of a Top 10 Buckeye team. The 1980 matchup is notable for having Hugh Green and the No. 3 ranked Pitt Panthers obliterate Heisman winner George Rogers and the South Carolina Gamecocks, 37-9. The December 31, 2018, Gator Bowl featured the Texas A&M Aggies scoring 45 unanswered points against North Carolina State in a 52-13 victory over the Wolfpack.

What a Great Game! Go Gators! Great Job Ohio State. It doesn't matter who you were rooting for, it was a great football game. And, Even the officials did not mess it up too bad.

The venue was excellent for the Gator Bowl, however, it was disappointing that for a Bowl Game, the teams names/schools weren't painted on the end zones...especially since the Jags season was already over!! I really liked all the different local interest things they had between quarters. Nice to see the Gator Bowl committee supporting the local community. Also, the placement of the bands in the stadium so that their OWN fans could hear them, was poor. We were seated on the same side of the field as the OSU band, but at the opposite end and couldn't hear them AT ALL!! Simple accoustics here folks...if you play towards the opposite side of the field, that's the only side which will be able to hear you! We could hear the Florida band great since they were playing directly AT the Ohio State fans!!! It would be much better if the bands were placed in the end-zone and could play "down" the field, their own fans would be able to hear them much better. This really distracted from the game. Being an Ohio State fan, but only hearing Gator music was a real bummer!

    Great Event

by Scooterdad on 1/4/12EverBank Field - Jacksonville

This was my first Bowl Game ever. I thought the Bowl Committee and the City of Jacksonville put on a great event. Concessions were better than I expected. I thought the entertainment during the breaks in the game were fitting. Overall I had a great expierence. I drove down from Savannah Ga. because I am an Ohio State Fan but I would attend another Gator Bowl even if my team was not playing. One thing i was disappointed at, The End Zones should have been painted with the team colors.

    The Gator Bowl

by OSUfans on 1/4/12EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Although not the outcome we would have preferred, the event was fantastic. The pre-game Tailgate Party was well worth the $10 Patch. The stadium was clean and even though we were second row from the clouds, we had an awesome view of the field. Food was easily accessed at halftime, and the lines were not horrible. The restroomns were clean. The only negative comments we have are regarding the scoreboard attendant who could not seem to post the correct numbers, and the acoustics are horrible.

    A little boring

    by buick11 on 1/4/12EverBank Field - Jacksonville

After spending $400 on tickets and $25 on a parking pass, we had to pay $10 each (family of 4 = another $40) just to enter the "experience" where we could spend more money on food and drinks with not much entertainment.

    Gator Bowl...Miss. St...WOW!

by JohnsTSO on 1/9/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

The Gator Bowl was great fun and the fans were super! A few drunks and red necks as is the case throughout America, yet other than that simply SUPER! The stadium is nice, avoid venturing far away for cheeper parking...homelessness is great and sad to see. The Miss. St. team missed about ZERO tackles and to see a team play such and excellent game was cool....even though I'm a big ten fan...speed obviously kills, especially when you don't make mistakes! Great Job Miss. St.! Opening with the singer from Cold Play was AWESOME! I'm already there is truely an American Classic already!

    Gator Bowl game

by GatorBowlFan on 1/7/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Please do not allow fans to bring cowbells or anyother noise makers to another Gator bowl game. It was very distracting to all the fans and became very annoying after listening to those for the entire game. I understand school traditions, but those can be observed in their home stadiums, not in a bowl game. By the way, I am not a Michigan fan, so this isn't a comment based on the outcome of the game.

great day. everyone of the staff were helpful and courteous. Too bad the NCAA allowed the Mississippi State fans to bring their cowbells. During the parade it got ugly for a few minutes when a young man purposely rang it in the ear of a Michigan band mother. There was a confrontation. I was afraid it was going to spill over at the game, but fortunately it didn't. Other wise the event was successful. DRS

Great time at the Gator Bowl!

by DawgBandFan on 1/4/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Thanks Jacksonville for a great week at the Gator Bowl! We enjoyed all of the festivities, spent a lot of time at the Landing and the surrounding area, and were treated well everywhere we went. It was so fun having the cowbells ringing in the new year every where you went. What a fun time! And the stadium was superior! Go Dawgs!!!

    First Class Event

by orangecamel on 1/4/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

I definitely recommend buying the patch ahead of time so you can go right into the tailgate area. Plus, you save $5. Lots of fun and fellowship prior to the game. This was our first time at Everbank Field and we were very impressed by the stadium compared to other NFL stadiums.

    Great Gator Bowl Experience

by Pamonline on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Great experience. Very good crowd interaction & fun exchanges in the stands. Great to see the same stadium ushers we see during Jags home games. Plenty of ushers available with accurate information to my inquiries. The only negative I can think of was the free refill soda machine. It ran out of ice and some soda flavors that I found when I attempted to get a refill. I asked at a beverage sales counter for a refill, was directed to the self-service machine, explained about the lack of ice & some flavors, and was given a refill by the counter staff.
