About

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at Everbank Stadium

Jacksonville is the largest and most populous city in Florida, and is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious bowl games in college football. Each year, one of the best teams in the Southeastern Conference takes on a top team from the Big Ten Conference or the Atlantic Coast Conference in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. The Gator Bowl is held at Everbank Stadium, which opened as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in 1995 and currently holds 67,184 for Jacksonville Jaguars games and up to 82,000 for bowl games and the annual Georgia-Florida game.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl History

The inaugural Gator Bowl took place on January 1, 1946, as a near-capacity crowd of 7,362 saw Wake Forest defeat South Carolina 26-14. Due to popular demand, Fairfield Stadium was soon expanded and renamed Gator Bowl Stadium, after the venue's marquee event. The Gator Bowl has been played on the same site since its inception, with the exception of the December 1994 game held at Gainesville while the original Gator Bowl Stadium was being demolished and rebuilt. From 2015 to 2017, the game was known simply as the TaxSlayer Bowl, but its original name was reintroduced for the 2018 edition.

The most infamous moment by far in Gator Bowl history took place in 1978, when Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes punched Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman after the latter made a game-clinching interception. The punch, and the subsequent firing of Hayes, overshadowed the Tigers' 17-15 upset of a Top 10 Buckeye team. The 1980 matchup is notable for having Hugh Green and the No. 3 ranked Pitt Panthers obliterate Heisman winner George Rogers and the South Carolina Gamecocks, 37-9. The December 31, 2018, Gator Bowl featured the Texas A&M Aggies scoring 45 unanswered points against North Carolina State in a 52-13 victory over the Wolfpack.

No Gators in the Gator Bowl

by McGinnes on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

The conventional wisdom, and almost all of the sports media, said that the Florida Gators would be invited to the Gator Bowl. I was sorely disappointed when the Gator Bowl decided they would rather have "heads in beds" than continue their good relationship with UF. Hopefully, the next time the sports media starts predicting that the Gator Bowl will invite the Gators, UF's athletic department will announce that Florida is not interested in the Gator Bowl.

The event was well planned, and went perfectly. The staff was amazing and very helpful. Getting out after the game was well planned, and moved quickly.

Always great event! Seats were horrible.

by JaxGatorBowl on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Jax always puts on a great game! My seats were behind a plexi-glass and the cameramen. I should get a refund these seats were so bad. I had to move to the other side but not with a center view. These seats should be "give-aways"

Gator Bowl was a Great Experience

    by Akbar18 on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Jacksonville did a good job with this event. We saw the fireworks on new years the day before the game. The pre-game events were all fun. The only bad part was watching my team get their butts kicked...

    Weak service

by robtby on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Concessions were run by a different crew than the jaguars games. It was ridiculous how much they fooled around with long lines during game time. Upon finally reaching the front of the line I learned English was not pheasable. I actually had to speak Spanish so they could understand what I was saying. After that debacle I decided to pay cash for a beer in my seat. Though the bucket clearly said $7 they charged $8. Not a huge deal. But still another straw on the camel's back. The last straw was the idiot threatening to kick us out for standing still watching the Michigan band enter the field. Not for blocking the entrance or a secure area. But, for simply standing still. Now I know why Jacksonville locals don't go to the gator bowl.

    Not too Happy!!

    by slimshady2626 on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

I paid an extra five dollars for a game patch when I purchased my tic thru ticketmaster. No one at this event could tell me how or where to recieve this item. Therefor I paid an extra five bucks for absolutely nothing. I am not very happy about that at all.. The event was very un-organized, people working there couldn't even direct us in the correct direction of our seats. But they sure wanted to make sure you were inside of the lines of the smoking area, evidentally that was more important than helping people that paid a small fortune to go to this event. I was also concerned which team area I would end up in since I didn't get to know or pick when I bought tic's. Fortunately I ended up in the right section. All in all I would not attend this event again here and I live here!!!

Game was wonderful -- parking was not!!!

by MLTY on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

The game experience and tickets were just terrific, but the parking was not!! We purchased a parking ticket ahead of time but could not print it. We were suppose to go to wll call to get the parking ticket -- When we got to Jacksonville, it was so crowded and confusing, that we just spent more money and found parking for ourselves. Thus, we paid for but never used the parking I purchased. I do not understand why I was able to print my tickets, but was not able to print the parking ticket. It sure would have made the day perfect and I would not have wasted almost $34.00 more dollars -- too bad I can't get that money back.

    Gator Bowl Weekend...Fantastic!

by Pinknursey on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

City of Jacksonville really rolled out the red carpet for University of Michigan fans (and Mississippi State fans too)! Security at all venues was superb. Michigan Marching Band was the star of the show at all performances!!!! Only negative was the inability to hear any play announcements during the football game. I was disappointed with acoustics at EverBank Field and their 'jumbo tron' was just too small to see plays/play backs because of all the space occupied by advertisements.

    Gator Bowl was incredible!!!!!!

    by Cowbell60 on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

The Gator Bowl was an unbelieveable experience. Thousands of Maroon and White fans, great food, announcer was good and not too loud, the facilities were first class, it was clean, staff was accommodating, the policemen and staff were kind and ready to help if needed-very personable, food and memorabilia were reasonably priced, and, of course, all the cowbells-and we could ring them every play. It was FUN and worth every penny spent and I am not a wealthy man. The city of Jacksonville did a GREAT job to make it a first class bowl, It was my first time ever be at a bowl and I would love to go back to Jacksonville every year if I can afford it. It was everything I thought a bowl should be and I loved it.

The weather and setting and location were wonderful. We had tickets to the Michigan Tailgate but people at the stadium and police had no idea where it was located. My wife and daughter never made it to the event because she couldn't find it. It didn't seem as if they were prepared for that many people coming to the event. The pep rally was wonderful and the people talking could be heard and it was exciting. However, at the Tailgate, the speaker system was not to be heard. The location for the pep rally was wonderful as we were in the first row with children and they were excited. The cheerleaders were extremely nice to our grandchildren and allowed their pictures to be taken with them. The police at the stadium were not helpful at all. When visitors come from out of town and someone has a question, they need to respect the person and answer it appropriately. My family was not impressed with the people helping at the stadium.

    The whole weekend was incredible!

This was my first bowl game experience. While I was sorely disappointed in my team (Michigan), the venue was excellent. Great views and roomy comfy seating.

    Gator Bowl

by UofMer on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Getting tickets for the game and parking was easy. The directions on the parking pass to the lot were way too small to read without magnification. The game was terrible from my perspective but that has nothing to do with ticketmaster. The only thing that I would have liked was to have been given the choice to sit with and be surrounded by the people supporting my team! Unless you purchased seats at the fifty yard line, you had no way of being ensured that you would be with like minded fans. All in all, I will use ticketmaster again.

    Mississippi State did great

by MyThirdTry on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

TicketMaster needs to add team preferrence to "Best Available" ticket search. We were on the Michigan side and when purchasing tickets I was unable to determine which side was what team. However, there were a good number of MSU fans on the east side so all was well.

    Gator Bowl was great!

by Anonymous on 1/3/11EverBank Field - Jacksonville

Great day and great stadium for a game. Everbank is easily accessible and a great looking stadium. Clean facility, plenty of security, and diverse food choices. City of Jacksonville can be a lot of fun if you know where to go.
