About

TAVARES IN CONCERT:

From their R&B beginnings to their disco heyday, the iconic soul siblings of Tavares have always been known for their party-starting grooves and infectious on-stage energy. Continuing to perform with four of the original five Tavares brothers, the group is as entertaining as ever, thrilling fans with their retro stagewear, synchronized dance moves, and feel-good jams. From the romantic balladry of "A Penny for Your Thoughts" to the disco funk of "Don't Take Away the Music", Tavares always treats fans to a dynamic, nostalgic, and booty-shaking live show on their must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Tavares brothers were born in Rhode Island to parents of Cape Verdean descent, and they began performing together in 1959 under the name Chubby and the Turnpikes. After signing to Capitol records in the mid-'60s and scoring several regional hits, they changed their name to Tavares and released their 1973 single "Check It Out". The track was the first in a long string of hits that included chart-toppers like "She's Gone" (1974), "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" (1976), and "Whodunit"(1977). In addition to touring with acts like the Jackson 5 and KC and the Sunshine Band, Tavares appeared on the soundtrack to the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever -- a gig that earned them a Grammy. They released their final studio album Words and Music in 1983, and by the mid-'90s they had become a trio following the departures of brothers Ralph and Tiny. Now a quartet after reuniting with Tiny, Tavares continues to dazzle on tour with their timeless sound, dapper style, and extensive catalog of hits.

    Tavares

by cmac923 on 7/31/18Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk - Brooklyn

Sharon Brown "I Specialize in Love" they could have left her off the ticket. Although most of the show was performed via a soundtrac, they were all entertaining. The sound mixer should have given more weight to the vocals instead of the bass. Otherwise it was a very good, entertaiing show.

Enjoyed the finale by the Tavares, loved all the acts... some parts the sound got a little distorted but overall it was a great show... also wish there were fans to help cool down the place.

    The new Stylistics and Tavares

    by stereo1 on 5/15/18Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

Fantastic concert at Lynn Auditorium, great venue. The Stylistics were fantastic, great to hear all of the old songs. Their sound person could tone back the volume though on the lead singers voice. He has a high voice which doesn't need a whole lot of volume. it was a little piercing. The opening performers were doing their own sound, and were way out of touch on volume of themselves. way, way, way too loud. Tavares was the last act and their sound was at a normally loud sound. They sounded great, not over powering. I wish I had seen the Stylistics and Tavares earlier in their careers. They were awesome!! I hope I get a chance to see the both of them again!

    Back to the 70’s

by ClarksCoveGirl on 5/15/18Lynn Auditorium - Lynn

Tavares was great! They sang all the old hits and had everyone dancing and singing in the aisles. Their voices are still amazing too! Russell Tompkins Jr and the new Stylistics were also in great form. When they sang “Betcha By Golly Wow” it sounded as good as it did way back when. Both bands were very engaged with the audience. The venue is easy to get in and out of. The sound was great and the seats were comfortable. I didn’t give them 5 stars because the first balcony section has seats that do not drop down as needed so it’s difficult to see over peoples heads. There is no leg room and your feet hit the back of the seat in front of you. Thankfully the usher told us when we were seated, that we could move back and higher to some empty seats after the show started. We did. I think, since the seating in that area can’t be changed, it should be disclosed upon purchase. I would have chosen different seats. I would have been very upset if I had to sit there for the whole show.

    Disco Rules at Westbury

by CoolDJCarl on 1/4/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

It was a fabulous concert filled with disco stars who brought us back to the 70s,and the days of Saturday Night Fever. France Joli was especially pumped up for the concert . Her voice and enthusiasm really got the crowd going. It was a pleasure to see older groups like the Trammps, Tavares and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes still going strong. I also loved seeing Corey Dave sing one of the all time disco classics, Cherchez la Femme! The person who or organized the concert did a great job of assembling the stars. It was a wonderful treat for me and many other hard core disco fans who attended the show!

Great Show but FIX THE SOUND

by LoriDiscoEnthusiast on 1/2/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

The show was wonderful and I would highly recommend BUT a consistent problem is this venue is the sound balancing. When the performers were singing with pre-recorded material the volume was up so high that the place was vibrating and the sound was so distorted that I could barely tell what song was being performed. Not the fault of the performers who were all fantastic. Wish Donna Pescow made more of an appearance and wish Yvonne Elliman got to sing more than one song, but everything else was 100% on. I've seen most of the performers individually at NYCB and I have to say this performance for each of them was their best. Great choice of songs, incredible enthusiasm... France Joli looked and sounded wonderful, as did Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Trammps, Tavares, Carol Douglas... and all the rest. So glad I didn't miss this..bad weather and all.

    pit section seating

by 1NYFan on 1/2/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

The show was excellent. Great music and close to 4 hours long. However, the seating was not as expected. My pit section seating started out behind the band. That being said the stage does rotate but not fully to where the performers were never directly infront of us. I did pay $125 per ticket and most of the show all we saw was the backs of the band members. Again the music was great, but these seats should come with a disclaimer stating limited vision, that way I could have looked for better view seats.
