Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    Great experience at Tampa

by Mki on 3/12/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We went to see an NHL game where Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers meet. The match was our first ever and the experience was really great. Victor Hedman was on fire in this game, recording two goals and one assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0. Tampa's success on the ice had the fans screaming and cheering their team on enthusiastically. The highlights of the match were exciting and the players gave their all. The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated the game and showed strength. The atmosphere was electric, and there were enthusiastic spectators.

    Good Game

by Wulfman on 3/12/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

It's unusual for me to go to a field hockey game in shorts. Clear winner with the Tampa Bay Lightnings, which was great. Unfortunately, the atmosphere is not comparable to that in Switzerland. Many spectators left the game 10 minutes before the end, which I can't understand at all. There is a lack of appreciation for the players. The stadium is very nice and everything is well organized. I would love to come again.

Everything was great. We loved the venue from the outside courtyard to the inside of the arena. All of the fans were very nice even though we were cheering for the opposition!!

    Way too expensive

by MD on 3/5/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Only bought because we had company in town and they wanted to go to a game. I would NEVER pay that much for a ticket again. Club level really doesn't have that many amenities you can't get anywhere else in Arena.

    Fun times with family

by Erin P on 3/5/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We had a really good time -especially since they won in the shoot out. We liked that people from the community were included and honored during the event (100 year old man's birthday and he sang the national anthem with the regular singer - wow! Young boy that was team captain for the day. Woman from deaf and hard of hearing services, etc). It was a little expensive (we were 3 rows from the ceiling - $70 seats, food/beverage was quite expensive) and the folks behind us were really drunk/high and a little annoying. If you don't like loud noise/lots of visual stimulation, this is not the place to go. But if you like an energy-filled, exciting event, would definitely recommend.

Service was great! Game was great! Traffic on the I-275 was backed up solid which unfortunately made us very late. Other than that it was a wonderful experience.

    Awesome

by WynterScape on 2/22/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We went with a group of 8 from Ottawa to see the Sens Vs The Lightning. We were up in the nosebleeds with the rowdy fans and had a blast. Love the lightning bolt that goes off each time Tampa Bay scores. Will definitely come back again to see another game. The stadium was clean and the seats were comfy.

Worst hockey game in 40 years

by Tom T on 2/20/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

To celebrate birthday, I decided to take my wife and daughter to Lightning game - Saturday night vs rival red hot Panthers. Decided to splurge on great seats between the blue lines upper part of lower bowl...$902 for 3 seats face value including taxes. The Lightning team essentially quit on themselves and the fans fove minutes into the game and let the Panthers run up to 8-1 score before ending it mercifully 9-2. The game was over after 5 minutes in, and I will never spend with parking etc $1000 for a family of 3 to be a total disaster of a night in hopes the team feels like playing hatd that night. Needless to say,my wife and daughter have no interest in going to any more games. Absolutely pathetic and total waste of $1000 + for a family of 3. I have watched hockey games for over 40 years and this was simply unacceptable performance. If it was a concert they would have refunded money it was so bad. Costly lesson learned the hard way.

    Traffic

by Duke on 1/28/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

The Lightning game was great!!!! Love the Lightning but….. the traffic getting to and leaving Amalie IS HORRIBLE!!!! Traffic lights need to be synchronized so traffic can flow. It’s super frustrating to sit at light after light waiting for green when there’s no crossing traffic. City needs to do something to make traffic lights facilitate traffic flow. This isn’t rocket science.
