Tampe Impala in Concert
Tame Impala is Kevin Parker - the almost legendary messianic figure and creative soul who has developed the particular sonic universe of psychedelic pop cultivated with guitar pedals, delays, reverbs and liquid explosions of color. There's no one like him in the current music scene. We were left in 2015 with Currents, Tame Impala's third album which ventured further into the pop genre, and added dance beats and R&B that only served to underpin the enthronement of the Australian. For his fourth album, Tame Impala remained true to his usual impenetrability and stands silent, but we have seen him parade through a number of collaborations: he has shared the studio with Mark Ronson and SZA, he has produced Lady Gaga and Travis Scott, Rihanna covered him on her latest album, he has remixed Mick Jagger and Miguel and has released songs with A$AP, Rocky, Theophilus London and ZHU. So what does all this mean? Well, we know what Tame Impala has been until now, but we haven't a clue what will happen next. And that can only be a good thing.
Great setilist, great performance. Got to the very front and enjoyed every second of the concert.
I have never heard of Tame Impala until my fiance made me to listen to them. Usually we have very different tastes in music, but for this band we both agree, they are great! Our 9th anniversary was coming up and I noticed they were playing St Andrews Hall, our favorite venue in Detroit and bought tickets for the show. I am so glad I did! The drive from GR to Detroit gave me a chance to listen to them for the first time. They have this 70's space/stoner rock type of sound. I would compare it to the Beatles mixed with Pink Floyd, with a splash of Rush.....IMO. Although they definitely have their own vibe and jam very well together. They are so eclectic I hear them on Jamon and Alt Nation on Sirius. So they are a Jam-Indie band?!?!?! The cds we listened to sounded very raw but well produced. Which had me thinking playing live they might not be able to pull off the almost St Peppers type of album. We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn and were greeted by a very pleasant and friendly staff. The hotel, which was close to the venue had a "Five Guys Burgers" in between. Yes!!! And they served beer! Double yes!!!! Perfect place to hit up a quick burger and beer before the show. Getting to the venue was an easy and a very safe walk from the hotel. Barely a line, and entered quick and smooth. We arrived just in time to see the Growl play their last 2 songs. The venue is really hot, small and intimate, just the way we like to see a show. Tame Impala came on and just blew me away from the beginning. They didnt blow me away with a loud rock sound and they don't play hard or make your ears bleed. They play this nice space rock sound that sometimes ends unexpectedly or jams on and you get lost in their little world of music. For the first part of the show we got up pretty close, about 10 rows back on the right side. After our first beer and losing our minds in the first 5 songs we decided to head to the back, for a quick bathroom break and beer refill. As we stood in the back, the "Feels like we only go backwards" song came on and sounded so great. Also their light show had picked up a bit from the single green laser in the beginning to some psychedelic blob patterns. After that song, we made a quick exit outside to get a breather and cool off. Boy was it hot!!!! As we made it back inside we decided to head to the upper balcony on the right side. We got pretty close and had a great view next to the VIP area. The balcony was 10 times hotter and I noticed the lead singer had no shoes. Any place we stood in the venue, the sound was amazing. I love St Andrews! From seeing bands like Blind Melon all the way to Static X, I have never had bad sound there. I could have listened to Tame Impala play all night. Overall it was the best show we have seen in a while and had a great time! On the way out I was hoping to get a poster that was specifically designed for the show and they had sold out. Total bummer. I didn't realize they only had 25. So I picked up a winter tour poster which was just as nice and headed back to the hotel. The fiance and I were still up for a little fun so we hit up the Greektown Casino for an hour of drinking and gambling. Great casino and very friendly bartenders. Overall we had a great time and can't wait to get back to one of our favorite cities.....Detroit!!!
Theses guys are pros, don't let anyone fool you they have the most developed live psych rock performance shy of The Flaming Lips. Believe it.
I don't generally review Ticketmaster shows, because really, who reads them, and anyway, who has the time? But after attending my third Tame Impala show in NYC (not counting a few several years ago in Australia) I had to share it with the world. These boys just bring a performance that's unmissable to anyone who can appreciate the vibe of live music played in a room with people who are clearly loving every moment. The improvisations, the deviations, the beautiful luscious joy they bring to music is something that makes you think you can never listen to the album record again when the live experience is so, so beyond. And if you haven't seen the incredible ending to Elephant, with a soul-climbing YEAH at the end - or their brilliant Half Glass Full of Wine, you are missing out.
Show was a little shorter overall than I anticipated, and there was a long delay between the opener (The Growl which was awesome by the way) and Tame Impala getting on the stage. But overall it was a spectacular band and performance.
Overall I love Tame Impala and now I'm a huge fan of the growl (love you cam) but everything was really messy and I understand that they were tired and it was the first show of the US tour, but the sound system was incredibly messy with a horrible echo. However, my undying love for Kevin Parker and Nick Allbrook makes this irrelevant because they're excellent performers and they brought along with them the most entertaining and talented opening band that I've ever seen. Also, I went home with the setlist and an amazing t shirt so I pretty much forgot about the echo at that point.
Solid show, definitely enjoyed it. My one complaint is that they push the reverb sound a bit too much. Not that you ever really can in a concert environment, but I couldn't understand one word of one lyric. Or was it just the acoustics of the venue, Terminal 5. Nevertheless, just when I thought they sounded a bit samey, they would change up the sound, so I give them a lot of credit for that kind of dynamism and not yet becoming sellouts. They have a nice kinda psychedelic sound to them, really fills the room. At one point, the singer reminded me very much of the singer of Supertramp. I only hope they continue to sound different and cut back on the reverb a bit.
Openers "the Growl" killed it. So good. Sound was great. Tame Impala killed it. Amazing musicians. Everything was slightly different than records. Sound was louder for them and not as clear. Mix was muddy even for psychedelic rock.
Doesn't get much better than seeing a band in their prime playing psychedelic rock at small venues. Amazing show. Kevin's vocals were great, and the band was amazing. Got to meet the guys after the show and got my setlist signed by everyone except Nick. Great night.
Tame impala are a talented group of gentlemen from Australia. This was my fourth time seeing them and the show has only gotten better. The new album Lonerism is really something I can connect with. They are a perfect band and I adore Kevin. If you ever get a chance see these guys they will blow your mind!
I saw these guys a few months before at Outside Lands, and was blown away by their amazing sound. But this time around, they took their performance to another level. They had a rad visualizer that correlated with the music, they made every song sound unique but still as great (if not better) than the record, and by the end of the show, every single person was up and jumping around. On top of all that, they had an excellent balance between songs from their first album, Innerspeaker, and their latest, Lonerism. In a humble rockers opinion, that's what makes a great show. I highly recommend seeing them should you have the chance!
I saw these guys at Outside Lands in San Francisco and they killed it. This show, although more intimate, lacked the dynamic of the festival show. The new album sounds great, but live the songs came off a little more subdued. The lead singer needs to work on his between song banter. Other than that, great show. My friends and I dug it.
The show was great. I was expecting their sound to be a bit too much for such a small theater but the sound engineers did a terrific job of making everything proportional. I purchased a ticket last minute for nearly $100 and still feel as though I got my money's worth. Thank you!
First time reviewing something on ticketmaster but I just couldn't pass the amazing night I just had. Tame impala is a phenomenal band! It was a great experience to see them live in LA at the Fonda theatre. I also liked the venue too!
Took the crowd to new heights with their older and new material. Great stuff.
There are no words to express how freakin' awesome the show was. I've never felt quite so enveloped by the sound. Mind blown. I want more.
Kevin Parker's gotten over his intense shyness and displeasure with performing for us Americans. His music is wonderful and now he's willing to perform it for us in all the glory it deserves. His guitar jams were to die for. The sound was great too.
This was one of the best shows I've seen over my 30 years of concerts. These guys have it down. If you snooze and miss them it is your loss. They put on an amazing live show that makes their records pale in comparison and the recorded Impala is worthy of top-ten of the year.
Usually groups cycle with highs and lows during thir performance. Tame Impala--- ONE SOLID HIGH throughout their performance! Not to be missed
Great show, except they didn't play my favorite song! But I don't really mind...
