    Many great moments

    by thespian1225 on 8/29/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I had always wanted to see this play. It is my fourth Sondheim (not counting W. Side Story). I enjoyed the premise of the play-- the interaction of the artist with his characters, and the tableaux created of the characters in the painting were magical. The costumes were nothing short of amazing. (I have seen the picture but could not remember if the colors and styles in this play exactly match the picture or not).Several interspersed moments of humor were welcomed. The unexpected second act jump to the future was a nice added touch, though a bit drawn out. (For a non-theatre-afficianado, the whole play would be judged too long, I think). Some of the dialogue in the second act, was particularly simplistic. Sondheim's music is an acquired taste for many. My husband complained of "non-tuneful songs" but I am used to Sondheim's style. His usual amazing, witty, rhyming lyrics are always the best, and I found them very entertaining. One song in the second act definitely repeated itself too long, though. Voices and singing were excellent, as is always the case with Signature. Some would need assisted hearing devices for a few of the quiet songs (the grandmother in Act 2, and the quieter notes of George's songs). Casting seemed appropriate and acting was up to the task, though the play does'n't seem to demand as much of a range of emotion as some. I really enjoyed the evening, and can believe the review that says this is one of the best productions yet of this piece.

    Not impressed

by chazcat on 8/29/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The first half of this play, first act was much better than the second act. In fact the second act has questionable entertainment value to the whole play. The acting and singing were done well.

    A brilliant production and performance!

    by Kirst72 on 8/27/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

"Sunday in the Park with George" is a brilliant production which was beautifully performed. The show itself is incredibly clever, funny and poignant, and the actors who performed at Signature were unbelievably talented as was the orchestra. Every detail was exquisite and I would highly, highly recommend this show! In fact, I bought a ticket for my sister who lives in Annapolis and she is attending the performance this Saturday evening.

    What a wonderful show!

by ETBTP on 8/27/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This show brings together visual art, drama and music so exceptionally. The cast was great, particularly the two leads. There were several times I was brought to tears by its exploration of the artistic spirit and how art can sometimes trump relationships. My favorite moment is when Georges finally manages to get all of the characters in place--quieting their messy, noisy, conflicted, all-too-human lives to create the beautiful moment captured in the painting.

    A Glorious Evening

by ProfessorWatchalot on 8/26/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I have often been dismayed when I hear SUNDAY referred to as "hard to connect with" or "too complicated" - when those are exactly the klnds of things Georges Seurat must have heard about his masterpiece, that is now adored by millions. Yes, this musical requires you to LISTEN, and allow yourself to FEEL - but all great art requires participation! And the personal issues of Georges and Dot are completely understandable to anyone, who is willing to consider that their work, and their relationships are just as fraught and confused as the characters in this musical. The music, for me, is as melodious and emotional as any I have ever heard, and the lyrics - heartbreakingly human and beautiful. This production allows the work to breathe and live with simplicity and truth, and was wonderful to experience!

    Outstanding

by SecondFan on 8/26/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I really liked the play, the message, the acting, the music - and I do not even like musicals. The only suggestion I have is that they give the lead male character a more believable beard, the one he is wearing for the first act is silly-looking, almost Lincoln-like. But overall, I totally enjoyed the show.

Sunday in the Park with George can be missed

by dianainroma on 8/26/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Act I was excellent and there the musical needed to end. Act II was a head scratcher and diminished the elevation of Act I. Be aware that much of the story line is totally fabricated - read Seurat's bio before you go.

Sunday In the Park with George was tremendous!

by SteadyJoy on 8/21/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Sunday In the Park with George at the Signature theatre was excellent! I came down from New York City to see it -- my 4th time seeing it, including the original on Broadway and the revival on Broadway. This production was the equal of the original in most important respects. Of course nothing can ever equal the original production, Bernadette and Mandy and the Broadway experience, but this production came closer than any I've seen. The intimacy of the theatre put me almost right in the show, in the painting, if you will. The staging and sets were excellent. Wonderful use of the space. Well worth the trip down. I will return for other shows at Signature.

Outstanding Production of a Stunning Work of Art

    by Robo1956 on 8/20/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I have seen the original and revival productions as well as the one directed by Eric Schaeffer so many years ago using the Broadway sets and costumes. This is a challenging but beautiful show. Signature has done a wonderful job with the production with a great cast and an interesting production. Living on the West Coast this is the first time that I have been to the Signature's exciting new space. The only negative was a less than pleasant box office employee who helped me. When I am paying this much for a ticket I don't expect to get attitude from the staff. And since I gave no reason for this behavior I really don't appreciate it.

I had such high hopes - should've passed on it

    by Alex202 on 8/20/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I thought this was such a great idea for a play - and after watching a clip online, I got tickets. Unfortunately, it ended up being extremely slow paced, the music/lyrics dragged on and on...and when the story line finally picked up and got interesting, the first half was over. I was looking forward to the rest, but the second half was fast forward to the modern age and while I see where it was going and how it tied in, I found it unbearable. I am so disappointed. P.S. they don't sell drinks until the intermission, unlike other local theaters and very small theater with removable seats on bleachers at such a steep angle there were still heads in the way. just not worth the price.

A beautiful production. Brynn O'Malley is perfect as Dot and Marie. I saw this on Sunday and I can't stop thinking about it. It's the type of show that stays with you--this production more than any other I've seen.

An unconventional musical -- leisurely pace and no hit tunes -- but there's much to chew on in this story of Georges Seurat and his iconic painting. The staging, costuming, scenery and performances are first-rate.

    A noble effort from Signature

    by Raftmaster1 on 8/19/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

"Sunday in the Park with George" is a complicated show. Technically it requires much imagination to be properly staged. It also requires singers with the acumen to deliver Sondheim's lyrics as intended. Signature's production succeeds on both levels. While Dot/Grandmother is beautifully portrayed, the character of George doesn't shine quite so brightly, though he improves in the second act. All of the supporting roles are very well performed. You can count on having a lump in your throat at the end of this show. The score is beautiful. Signature's "Sunday...", directed by Matthew Gardiner, is enjoyable throughout and a pleasure behold.

Since watching "Six by Sondheim" on HBO, I've wanted to see this play. It was very interesting and extremely well done. Sondheim definitely has his own style so it was not a "typical" musical, but very enjoyable nonetheless!

    Disappointing

by Grassfed on 8/13/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

We had high hopes, it was Sondheim and Shaeffer,, should have been good. It was underwhelming, Grandma (Dot) played the role by not speaking or singing loudly enough. Same criticism about some of the other characters and we had good close seats. Expected this director to ensure quality of sound good throughout.

    Great Musical

by GirlinSpace on 8/11/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

It was a last minute buy the day before -- I didn't know what to expect since I've mainly seen Broadway shows. It was a great cast, great script, and great music. Act I was very impressionable and I preferred the 'historical' scenes, everything tied together relatively nice in the end.

Signature Puts It Together with George ....

    by Cyclist2 on 8/10/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Signature's production of Sunday in the Park with George captures all the brilliance of the Sondheim/Lapine collaboration. Well done.
