Sundays in the Park with George

by retiredjb on 9/12/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I loved it, and my companion really liked it. Beautifully produced, directed, acted, sung, etc. Dot, in particular, was wonderful, and the whole cast really shone.

    not for everyone

    by MAC132 on 9/10/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This is a pretty slow-moving show. You are literally watching someone paint on stage. The performers were good and I had always wanted to see this show but could have missed it.

    Wonderful show!

by openreels on 9/9/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This really is a great show, with much of Sondheim's (and Lapine's) cleverness, memorable melodies, and modern musical style. But, different from many musicals, the score functions more like a soundtrack in some places. Rather than a bunch of dialogue and then a song, sometimes the music carries through parts of a scene. Sometimes the songs borrow themes from each other, and often overlap or intertwine. There is less of a verse-chorus structure to each song, and more unique bits written for a character's particular moment. The Signature production is excellent all around--they "get" the mood and the underlying themes--the balance between humor and melancholy came through. The show grabs you from the beginning and holds on! All the theatrical components--choreography, lighting, sound, costumes, etc.--were well conceived and executed. Plus, they took the opportunity to use vocal mics to extend the dynamics of the singing, sometimes from surprisingly soft to loud but not shrill. It's hard to avoid comparisons to the iconic Mandy Patinkin/Bernadette Peters version, they set a standard, but this production was as first-rate as you'll find off Broadway (or even on).

    Loved act I

by CRCchanman on 9/8/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I really like this play and liked this production as well. Seeing Sondheim in an intimate setting is fun as you can understand the words in the songs and really appreciate his display of pointillism in his music. I felt the first act was much stronger than the second, but this is more a problem with the play than with the production. The first act is about an artist deciding to allow his art to ruin his life. The second is an extended lecture on the state and business of art today. On the other hand, I found the George of Act I a little detached. The choice between Dot and his art is not presented or made with much passion on his part - more on hers. Her acting was terrific, by the way. All in all, a lovely evening at the theater!

    A Waste of Resources

by MYnamehasbeentakenbyanoth on 9/6/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The quality of the music, instrumental and vocal, was excellent. The acting ensemble was perfectly balanced. The staging was totally acceptable and the scenery appropriately minimalist. All this went to waste. The script, lyric, and musical composition can be described by two words: pretentious and boring. I would not attend this musical again, irrespective of who was staging it, even if someone else was paying for the tickets.

    Sunday in the Park

by AttendManyTheatres on 9/5/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This was a remarkable and thoroughly enjoyable play. We found it fascinating, and marveled at the imagination of those who created the play and put it on. It gives an understanding of the intensity of George Seurat in his creation of his masterpiece painting. We highly recommend seeing this play.

Very good company did an excellent job. staging very good, Although play very creative, we found it dragged some, but few companies would have done as good a job as the Signature.

Sunday in The Park with George-Go See it!

by Nikhi on 9/3/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This was one of the most moving and visually gorgeous plays or musicals I have experienced. The caliber of acting and voice was exceptional and the story, slow to start but became and grew into something wonderful, esp. at the second half. To create a story about the creative process and everyone and everything that is around that, is a gift. It is something that one, can only imagine, Onedoes not expect to be so moved by the humanity and beauty that art represents through the eyes of an artist and those who really know him. The theme also touched on the fact that art is no good until someone sees it, it has to be promoted and the artist is responsible for this-the dichotomy of this angst is a modern twist which makes the production very current and relatable. Lovely, Lovely and mind blowing, all at the same time.

    not for everyone

by NPRjunkieVA on 9/3/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I rarely write reviews but since these tickets are fairly expensive I would warn people that this is a slow-moving show with little chemistry between the main characters. I really love musical theater but found myself looking at my watch several times. It's a show I've always wanted to see, but now that I have, I could have skipped it. This was not the performers' fault...they were all strong with good voices.

Sunday In the Park Well Produced and Acted

by Sailingman on 9/2/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

First class production. Dot and music were excellent. The rest very good. I did not have the best seats but that did not matter... no issues seeing and hearing everything. George should have been a little older and less pretty -- or maybe he was just not as good an actor as Dot -- but again very good. The theater is also a very nice facility -- it was my first time there. Parking is messy so give yourself a bit of extra time for that.

    Sunday Is a Spectacle

by Johnanna on 8/31/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

My favorite part of the show is the freeze at the end of the first act recreating the famous painting. I also loved the way the show comes back in the second Act with an unexpected spin. The actress who plays Dot has incredible range and is as beautiful as a painting. Costumes and sets were spectacular. I do wonder if this could be done in less than three hours...a bit long, especially with Sondheim's score. It's not South Pacific (didn't leave humming) and the tragic love story isn't West Side Story -- more like an afternoon in a art gallery where we have some distance but can appreciate the drama.. Art and children, I agree.

Sunday in the Park with George: fabulous

    by Geezer1066 on 8/30/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The staging (lighting, costume, music, sound) was first-rate. The lead singers were excellent, although Dot/Marie needed a louder microphone and was too often difficult to hear from where we were sitting. I loved the child, Louise--very talented little girl. The creation/movement of the players into the final painting was an incredible piece of stage-craft.
