About

STURGILL SIMPSON IN CONCERT:

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a "Life of Sin" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's "The Promise", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sturgill Simpson was born and raised in Kentucky, where he began playing the guitar at age eight. He formed the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004, releasing an album and touring with the band before relocating to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-released his debut album High Top Mountain in 2013, receiving praise from critics for his updated approach to the classic outlaw country sound.  His sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music followed in 2014, expanding both his lyrical range and sonic palette with heady explorations of the human experience and an array of psychedelic production flourishes. A passionate performer with a genuine country rock sound, Sturgill continues to do Kentucky proud on his unforgettable concert tours.

    Definitely a rock show

    by T. on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Once you accepted that sturgill was going to put on a rock n roll show, it was great. The venue was great. I wish Tyler Childers did more than an hour set but he was the opener and not the headliner. My seats were incredible

Disappointed that Sturgill Simpson didn’t play any of his country songs.

    What did I pay for

by Disappointed on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Friends and family and I were so excited to see these guys. We took off work and some traveled >5hours only to find that we not hear a thing at spectrum arena. I have been to many shows and never had such a poor experience as at this arena. We could semi sing along to songs we knew. We couldn't make out a single thing that was said into the mic. All the folks around us left because they couldn't hear anything. Terrible time overall.

    Not a Big Fan

by Amber on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

I was pretty disappointed in this show overall. The acoustics were off so it was hard to hear Sturgill over the music. The lights were just okay and overall the show lacked some energy. I think it would have been better in a smaller venue

    The spectrum is terrible!

by Lynn on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

They herd you like cattle. Took and hour to get in. Lines everywhere. Men’s restrooms line were extremely long. Beer line were long. We will never go back. Missed half of Tyler because they couldn’t get people in in a timely fashion.

    Not my favorite concert.

by Courtney on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

This has been by far my least favorite country music concert. The new album he has released is just not something I can dig. The entire concert was the new album. The few older songs he played still had the same beat as the new songs. I just don’t like the newer album due to the fact the music is too much.

    Tyler Childers AWESOME

    Audio Too Low

by Ed R. on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

I know this isn't Ticketmaster's fault, but the audio during Tyler Childers' portion of the show in Charlotte was way too low. The audio was so low that I could hear people talking all around me while Tyler performed. I've never seen/heard anything like that at any of the shows that I have been to and I attend a lot of concerts. Very disappointing.

    Worst concert ever

by Lindsey on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

I usually buy nosebleed tickets so i thought i knew what i was getting. But usually - even up high - you can hear the music. Not this time. Everything was muffled and the sound quality was terrible. When the artist was speaking you couldn’t make out the words. People in my section kept yelling “turn it up!” 20 min in they were leaving. It cleared out pretty fast. I’m very disappointed Bc we were really looking forward to enjoying Tyler’s show.

A venue needs to check equipment before a concert

    by J. L. on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

I am going to apologize to start ! I love all types of music and go to a Lot, and i do mean "A LOT", of concerts! With that being said, this was the only time i have Ever left a concert early because of sound quality! Tylers sound was so low, you couldnt understand a word he said. The whole crowd was screaming "turn it up". Then when Sturgill came on they turned it up, which was overpowering the equipment, and it sounded like everything ran together... Im thinking they had too little equipment for the venue, or they did not do a sound check... It was Awful. Not talking about the music, but the sound. Someone dropped the ball, and a lot of people suffered ! A lot of people, paying good money, heard muffled noise...! I left at the start of Sturgills 4th song, and was amazed at the other people following suit !

The best of Sturgill being Sturgill

by Jess on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Music lovers rejoice: if you came for a show to hear one of the best guitarists alive today, you weren't disappointed. Sturgill proves that he's not afraid to deliver his own authentic brand of performance, independent of expectations and bereft of distractions. I can't think of another musician who has evolved in such a way in such a short time. This might alienate some folks hoping to hear more of his early hits, but for those of us happy to ride shotgun, or hell, even in the backseat, through the twists and turns of the Sound and the Fury of Sturgill Simpson, this show will leave you satisfied in your investment and excited to see what he will do next.

    Spectrum center sound sucks

by Minr on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Tyler and Sturgill were great. Sound at spectrum center made it nearly impossible to understand lyrics is either. I know the song’s so sang them in my head. Very disappointing

    Wouldn’t go back

    by W. P. on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Lines were extremely long. Line to get in, line to get beer and line to pee. CLT needs to work on this.

    These Guys Fuck

    by ATB3 on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Sturgill & Tyler rocked my face, and I would definitely go see them again. The venue was not as good. They made me throw out my Juul (even though I was allowed to bring in a lighter & cigarettes), and they wouldn’t allow me to keep the cap for my water bottle. I don’t think I’ll see another concert there because of that.

    Couldn't hear the words

by EK on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

We weren't able to hear the words for either artist. Totally not worth the ticket price.

    Could NOT hear a thing!

by Maddie C on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

We had tickets in Section 218 and we could literally not hear one word that Tyler Childers said the entire time. We could hear the music, but NOT him talking at all. Everyone around us was screaming at the stage that they couldn't hear anything either, which made it all the worse.

    Lines

by The Hornet on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Long lines, expensive crap beer, too many people, plaid everywhere. Tyler was pretty good. Sturgill seemed like he had done it a few dozen shows already. My friend was hammered so I spent too much time making sure he didn’t die. Overall - My introverted self should have stayed home and went to bed by 9:30 like usual.

    Not impressed

by Give me music or give Death on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson can definitely fill an arena that size with people, just wish I could say the same for their music.

    Bad Sound

by Beech Nut on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Spectrum Center sound engineering was terrible. Couldn’t hear Tyler Childers in the second level and Sturgill Played songs from a new album or soundtrack that was awful. When I saw Sturgill 2 years ago in Charlotte he absolutely killed it. Disappointed this time around.
