About

STURGILL SIMPSON IN CONCERT:

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a "Life of Sin" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's "The Promise", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sturgill Simpson was born and raised in Kentucky, where he began playing the guitar at age eight. He formed the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004, releasing an album and touring with the band before relocating to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-released his debut album High Top Mountain in 2013, receiving praise from critics for his updated approach to the classic outlaw country sound.  His sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music followed in 2014, expanding both his lyrical range and sonic palette with heady explorations of the human experience and an array of psychedelic production flourishes. A passionate performer with a genuine country rock sound, Sturgill continues to do Kentucky proud on his unforgettable concert tours.

    Acoustics

by Mr Misunderstood on 3/19/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

In the upper deck of Spectrum Arena, the acoustics were not good, especially during Tyler Childers set. You could not hear any of the words or guitar clearly. When the artists were speaking without music you could not hear their words unfortunately.

I know we would have loved it - if it had taken place :(

Music great, experience not so much

by Marielle on 3/15/20Petersen Events Center - Pittsburgh

Frustrated with the experience at the venue. Long lines to get in, missed the start of the show as a result. Long lines at concessions. Women’s bathroom near our section had no toilet paper all night. Sound wasn’t great either.

    Amazing Artist

by Sturgill4Life on 3/13/20North Charleston Coliseum - North Charleston

Sturgill is a brilliant artist. We were blown away at his talent. The man is a beast! He played straight through the entire set. No bull. Just art. Eternally grateful for the chance to see him and his great band.

    Sturgill/Tyler North Chucktown

by Slimjimdude on 3/13/20North Charleston Coliseum - North Charleston

Perfect combination of old school style & modern outlaw country music. The lights were amazing. I should've been on psychedelics. More "good lookin' tours" please.

    Concert Great Transportation Horrific

by Brooke on 3/13/20North Charleston Coliseum - North Charleston

Concert and venue were great. Getting an Uber or Lyft was impossible. We waited over an hour. If you suggest taking transportation do you need to make sure enough transportation is available. we were staying at a hotel 3 miles away so distance was not an issue. There were just not more than three drivers available.

    Beyond Expectations!

by Teachermon on 3/13/20North Charleston Coliseum - North Charleston

I was frankly blown away by Tyler Childers and Sturgill! Being a fan of jam oriented bands, I was not ready for the overall musical exploration they both brought out but extremely appreciative!

Best concert i have been to in a long time

    by EazyZ on 3/11/20

Coming into this show my hype levels were through the roof. Tyler and Sturgill absolutely blew the roof off the place. Tyler’s a hard act for anyone to follow when he jams like he always does but Sturgill followed with just as much intensity and rocked the arena for a good 3 hours mixing in some old with the new and putting on a 10/10 performance overall. What a duo these two are on tour together!

    Maybe some sound issues

by JCT on 3/10/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Tyler was fantastic. No complaints. Sturgill would have been better if he had preformed more of his traditional music in their original format. Sturgill was difficult to understand. I was not sure if this issue was with him or the sound.

    Poor Acoustics

    by S. on 3/10/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Anyone buying tickets at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC should be aware that above the 100 level you cannot hear words or soloists......The sound feels like you're listening through a garbage can. It was so frustrating we left after a few songs by Sturgill Simpson. It seems like what Spectrum does in the absence of decent acoustics is to turn up the volume, which further breaks down the sound. We figured we'd have a better experience leaving and listening to Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers on our Spotify playlists. We will not buy tickets for music (or anything else that requires hearing words or solos) at Spectrum Center again. The tickets are pricey for a bad listening experience.

Lot of heart but I can't hear the music

    by Wordplay123 on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

I could see the performers working hard to make a great show for fans, but I couldn't hear them. It sounded like the music was coming from down a long hallway. We hung in for the whole show, but it never got better. I still want to cry. Being a real fan and not be able to hear that mad guitar play that I could literally see happening in front of me, it was the most frustrating show I could ever experience.

The speakers were not working in our section so the show was difficult to hear.

    Sound was off

by CO on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

Not sure what was wrong, but from where I was sitting I could barely hear Tyler Childers play and couldn’t hear Sturgill play much better. From what I could see and hear the performances were great, but the poor sound quality ruined the whole experience. Not planning on seeing anymore concerts at the spectrum center

    Concert

by Casey on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

The staff at the spectrum center were all so friendly, it was clean & easy to access. Tyler Childers was great. But the volume needed to be up. It was hard to hear when he talked. It was a little muffled too. I would definitely see him again in concert. Sturgill Simpson sure can play a guitar but his part of the concert was disappointing as he didn’t really sing that much & mostly just played with the band. We almost left early but stayed just in case it got better. I would not see him in concert again

Tyler absolutely killed it. Sturgill was super disappointing. I’ve never seen people leaving a concert nor have I ever left one early myself until Sturgill came on! Will be seeing Tyler again will not see Sturgill or recommend him!

    Awful

by Dswooten on 3/9/20Spectrum Center - Charlotte

My husband and i were so excited to see sturgill Simpson and tyler childers. We had been counting down the days for weeks however when the band played we couldnt even understand anything that was being played. It was if we were in a completely different room. We werent the only ones upset. Everyone around us ended up leaving early because the sound quality was awful. We definitely wouldnt have made the trip if we were aware of this. Not only did we end up wasting money on a concert we couldnt even hear we also wasted time it took to drive to and from Columbia. We will never attend another concert of theirs until the sound quality improves and we get a refund. Entirely disappointed buy the whole event. I could of watched music videos on youtube for better quality.
