STS9 (SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9) IN CONCERT:
STS9 take fans to groovy new stratospheres with impassioned performances and a unique mix of EDM, jazz, and psychedelic rock. The group prefers building a vibe to showing off with flashy flourishes, but these rockers know their instruments -- each memberÕs instrumental prowess is on full display at all times. Drummer Zach Velmer and percussionist Jeffree Lerner combine acoustic and electronic rhythms to create a larger-than-life beat. Bassist Alana Rocklin gets heads bobbing and bodies swaying with her tasty, swinging basslines. And keyboardist David Phipps and guitarist Hunter Brown alternate between smooth leads and effects-drenched rhythm chords to keep things moving and grooving. Altogether STS9 has loaded up their funky spaceship with a killer sound system and their most immersive laser-light show yet, promising to take ticket buyers on an interstellar ride during their 2015 tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Atlanta in 1998, the original STS9 (short for Sound Tribe Sector 9) lineup featured Hunter Brown (guitar/midi), David Phipps (keys), Zach Velmer (drums), and David Murphy (bass/midi). The group soon released their debut album Interplanetary Escape Vehicle (1999), gaining attention for their mastery of jazz, funk, and electronica. Percussionist Jeffree Lerner came on board a year later and brought fleshed-out dance influences, which featured prominently on their 2000 sophomore effort Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace. The band then opened for superstars like Snoop Dogg, NAS, and Bassnectar before headlining tours of their own that fueled their growing reputation for stellar live performances. After David Murphy left the group in 2014, the band reached out to long-time friend and seasoned touring bassist Alana Rocklin to handle the low end. The refreshed lineup continues to bring mind-expanding music and far-out laser-light spectaculars to arenas and festivals around the world, converting more and more fans each step of the way.
This was a wonderful event and an absolutely beautiful venue. Highly recommended to those who like to have some FUN!!!
This show was unreal!! STS9 was great as always! Ghostland Observatory and Bassnectar were the best opening acts EVER!
The show absolutely blew me away. My only complaint is that WATER was $4 !!! you multiply that by 12000 kids, and thats just rape. And Bassnectar was going to end his set by playing a brand new track, but as soon as they started they made him stop because of time. Come on dudes, five more minutes?
Sickest Sound Tribe Sector Nine show I have got to see this year! Great venue, great people!
The show was awesome! Nice venue, and great openers!
This concert had the best lineup i have seen in a long time. STS9 is always awesome. The people who suprised me this time would have to be Ghostland Observatory and Bassnectar. Both of these acts where off the chain. I urge anyone that has not seen any of the bands that played at this concert to go ASAP and get tickets.
IT was a great show, the venue needs to let glowsticks in though, that was a real downer.
ghostland and sts9 were amazing!!!!!!!!!!! crazy show!
ghostland stole this show. They were by far the best band to play. The only problem was they played while it was still light outside, so their incredible light show was wasted. Overall the event was great. I was not that impressed with STS9 this time.
Friday night and Saturday altogether were different experiences but equally unbelievable shows. Friday night sts9 ended up playing past 1 am which was phenomenal thinking that they would only play til 12. And as for Saturday, being 15 feet from the stage from 5 til close was hands down the best time I've ever had. However, I feel compelled to say that I say that after every sts9 show..until next time, best show I've been to ever.
Easily one of the best nights of my life. Every single band was amazing, Bassnectar blew minds, and the crowd... was blowing up.
OMG, STS9 is beyond amazing. Between their amazing music and their badass light show, it doesnt get any better than that.
Sts9 was awesome, could have played a better encore considering its their last time in atlanta. Bassnecter was awesome but it sucked they got cut short, But both of those bands were incredibly humble. Lotus was incredible. Ghostland did great. Overall, it was an amazing weekend. Dont be fooled Sts9 rocked my face.
Ghostland Observatory was too short. They are one of the best live shows I have ever seen. They should have been the headliner for this show. The chances of me ever beeing at an event where I have to listen to Bassnectar is NONE!!!!!! STS9,,, well,, songs were longwinded and did not go anywhere. Uneventful to say the least.
The music was unforgettable and the light show was the icing on the cake. They put on a really good show. The fact that Bloc Party was there also was even better. Good times with good friends yo.
So I understand that some people are really in to Sound Tribe but I have always thought they had a pretty mediocre sound (sorry). I was told that when they were live it was amazing so I thought, "hey, why not? I LOVE Ghostland Observatory and I LOVE bassnectar!" So anyway- I saw Ghostland for the fourth time and it was so much fun. The energy those two guys bring on stage is unbelievable. Then bassnectar came on and it was pretty good. Then STS9 came on and not only was I disappointed with their performance, but I was seriously bored and pretty much counting down the minutes until I could leave. I probably wouldn't have cared too much over the fact that they were boring if Ghostland's set hadn't been THIRTY MINUTES LONG?!? Yes, they played like four songs I think. What is that about? and Bassnectar played for forty-five minutes? Well whatever, that hour and fifteen minutes of the night was fun but next time I buy tickets to something like this I am definitely going to figure out how long the sets are.
It was great seeing that many wonderful bands together - Lotus, Dubconscious, Dark party, Alex B, Ghostland Observatory, Bassnectar, and STS9! This was my first visit to this particular amphitheatre and we loved it!!
One day I want my own private Ghostland Show with just a few friends. He envokes the spirit of Robert Plant on stage, I feel like I am watching an electronic Zepplin. I appreciated BassNectar's Atlanta shoutout. We are fresh and funky and southern homegrown. And now he knows it. Been seeing S9 for 12 years. They have come far.
This was the best sound tribe sector 9 show i have been to. It was so much fun and all the band rocked.
the show was absolutely amazing starting with dubconcious and lotus to get the mood right. Ghostland did their usual funk and bassnector threw down hard as usual followed by an extremely solid sound tribe set
