Pooh was not what we expected

by apexgrandma on 4/14/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I was excited to be taking my 3 yr old grandchild to the first live show for him. I had thought that for 25.00 a seat, the quality would be a bit better than it was. The costumes were lacking in design, as I have seen Halloween costumes that portrayed pooh and friends better. The Tigger was very good, and the actor portraying Tigger was great! The production just felt more like 5.00 seat community theater. For that, it was great. To be seen as a more professional production, it missed the mark. Actors, you were great community theater actors. The story line was very 'scary' for smaller children, which is what this type of production is directed to. My grandson became frightened, and asked to "go home". Many other children exhibited the same behavior.

I thought the performance was excellent. It should have been advertised to a slightly older audience. I felt like my 6 year old was one of the older kids there - it was mostly a preschool crowd , some way too young to sit through it. Yet the play was more suitable for older children - maybe kindergarten - second grade.

It was not what I expected

by Anonymous on 3/12/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

It was a great play!! My children are ages 8,6, and 4. They were expecting rupunzel like in the Disney movie. I enjoyed the second half of the play the most because there was more action. The first half was a bit slow. The actors were fun and lively. I would recommend because it is such a great experience for our family. It is fun to see great talent.

    Not as good as expected

by Prrrrok on 3/9/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The show was rather poor, was expecting a much better performance depicting the story especially targettng smaller kids. Not very impressed to say the least, quite dissapointed.

by Maddiesdad on 3/7/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This play was way more than my family and I expected!! Characters were astounding...especially Edgar the hair dresser. It was great for adults and children alike. Thanks for the experience.

    My daughter likes it.

Not bad for my daughter's first musical. After a minor sound problem, it was great.

By far, the worst production I have ever seen. First off, it completely missed my expectations of being a children's production. Next, there was little to no storyline, and the singing was (at best) low-grade screeching. Full disclosure, maybe it got better after intermission, but we didn't stick around to see this.

    Rapunzel

by Spartanfan88 on 3/5/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Great play. We took our 13 yr old and 3 yr old. Both enjoyed it. The characters, music, lights and costumes were wonderful. The play was a little over our 3 yr old's head but she still had a good time. Our 13 yr old is at an age where 'stories' are not cool but she loves the theater so this was a good day. I would definitely recommend it for children a little bit older than 3 - not sure how well she really understood the story - but as I said our 3 yr old still had fun.

by marlycb on 3/5/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

My 4 year old was highly disappointed as well as myself. She didn't even want to take pictures with the characters. She was more excited to go look at the Tangled DVD. I regret that I gave ticketmaster 114.00 for this event.

Rapunzel - the good and the bad

by LGDGG on 3/5/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

My husband and I took our 3 year old granddaughter to see Rapunzel. She was truly excited. The show was good, but not great. It seemed as though the "characters" forgot that they were playing to an auditorium of young children as they spoke very fast with their words running together and the gypsy woman's accent was so affected that even the adults had trouble understanding what she was saying. Some of the innuendo was a bit much, again for an audience of young children. We had fun, but she didn't seem to enjoy as much as other programs we have attended. She didn't leave talking about any of the characters and when I asked who she liked the best, she responded, "the dragon I guess." We have plans to attend other shows in this series and I sincerely hope we are more pleased with those.

    Poor quality

by Anonymous on 3/5/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Terrible sound. Awful and borderline offensive characters (really? An overly-effeminate hair dresser?) The show was a complete waste of money. No wonder half of the people left at intermission.

A lot of items were not suitable for children. The set was boring. On a good note, the singing was really wonderful. The actors are very talented....... they just didn't have a lot to work with.

    Rupunzel for Young Children???

by Naniandgranddaughter on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I took my 2 1/2 year old Granddaughter to see it. The majority of the audience was her age or older or younger by about 2 years. I felt the play was directed at children no younger than third grade. I work in an elementary school with first and second graders, so I know their level of interest and ability to understand more adult humor. This was not geared to the very young. We weren't the only ones leaving at intermission. There was no set change, no dancing, not much talking...all things that would have held a young child's interest. I intend on attending more of the Storybook Series, but I hope that they will be more age appropriate. The singing was good though.

    Rapunzel - Best Adaptation Ever!

by MommaCass on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Rapunzel - A Very Hairy Fairy Tale was wonderful! This is the best adaptation I have ever seen. This version is not scary for young children - it is hilarious! I took my granddaughters age 4 and 6 and we all loved it!

    Rapunzel was lacking

by reviewer2234 on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

We were all surprised to find the storyline to be so different than any of the Rapunzel stories with which we are familiar. I get that the story was trying to be funny, but I felt that it was so far different than the original or Disney version, that it lacked in keeping my daughter's full attention. She has also been to a few other plays (local productions) and enjoys scene/costume changes and movement on stage. This production lacked in both. The last 20 minutes of the production were by far the most interesting. In the end, when asked, my daughter says that she enjoyed the show, so it wasn't a complete waste. But, I was disappointed and thought that the storyline should have catered better to the children. I was considering taking my 3 and 7 year old to see Frosty the Snowman later in the year, but now I am worried that the story will be too different from what they know.

    Rapunzel

by Krisan on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Overall, the kids enjoyed the play. They loved when the actors/actresses came out intp the audience! The kids were little confused with it having the different storyline than the movie. Would have been perfect with scene/backdrop changes. The length was very good and having the normal intermission was nice. It was a great family event.

Both story and sound tech were disappointing

by JulieSenorita on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

My friend and I brought our 4-year-old daughters to this show. We were all looking forward to it, but we ended up leaving after the first half. The actors were decent, but the story itself just lacked interest - the grownups and the kids were both bored. It seemed to drag on. The musical numbers were just blah - maybe some more dancing or something would have made it more interesting to the kids. The poor sound quality just made it worse. I don't think it is just the acoustics, because we've been to shows at this venue before and haven't had the same problem. Although the sound was loud, it was sort of muffled or garbled so that it was hard to understand what the actors were saying/singing.

    Rapunzel

by VECM on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This was a nice show, but WAY overpriced! The actors and actresses did a nice job and the theater was clean. The first half of the show was "over" the kids heads, but the last half hour the kids really got into it.

    Rapunzel

by lrschool on 3/4/13Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I was very disappointed in this play. The songs were too long as well as the dialog. The good witch seemed to speak in another language. The story was ruined. There was not a beauty school in the fairy tale. This was not appropriate for preschoolers. This was my three year old grandson's first play and I had to try to explain to him what was happening because of the story changes. Many people around me were disgusted with this play. I'm glad I didn't buy season tickets.
