About

Sting is a 17-time Grammy-winning artist and a founding member of the pioneering new wave band The Police. Born in Wallsend, England, Gordon Sumner, a.k.a. Sting, became one of the best-selling artists of all-time as the bassist and frontman of The Police. The band released five studio albums and six Top 10 singles, including the Sting-penned No. 1 hit “Every Breath You Take,” before disbanding in 1986. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and their 2008 reunion tour was the third highest-grossing tour of the ’00s. Since releasing his 1985 solo debut The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Sting has been recognized with a British CBE and an Emmy, featured at the Kennedy Center Honors and inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has also received four Oscar nominations, and his 2014 Broadway musical The Last Ship, which was inspired by his childhood and featured music and lyrics by Sting, was nominated for two Tony Awards. A constant experimenter of genres including jazz, pop, classical and world music, Sting won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2019 with Shaggy for their 2018 collaborative album 44/876.

    A Night of Music

by smartblond on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

Sting Rocked! This was my first time seeing Sting live in concert and it was absolutely the best! I cannot believe that he played, nonstop, for the entire 2-hour concert. His accompanying musicians were awesome and the Newark Boys Choir were really impressive. Sting has some very interesting stories about each of the songs he presented. The best!

Sting and his cast of musicians were inspiriting!

by AnnieMc on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

I love the whole concept of A Winter's Night to celebrate winter in such an appropriate beautiful way. Saint John the Devine provided the perfect compliment to Sting and all the amazing musicians it was a magical night, as your eyes roamed around the awe inspiring cathederal while absorbing the amazing music with Sting's sultry soulful voice, your mind wondered to the past yet Sting moved us to the present. I didnt want the night to end it was uplifting, inspiring and a wonderful magical night!

Sting on a Winter's Night in New York

by Songbirde on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

Sting is an amazing musician, and he surrounds himself with superb supporting singers and musicians. This was a beautiful collection of songs that created art, complete with the Cathedral setting and acoustics. It was absolutely beautiful. However, I did get the feeling that they could have used another rehearsal. I'm sure that tonight's performance (their 2nd one) will be much "tighter". Although Sting enjoyed the challenges of performing different music and his vocal executions were masterful, the ensemble as a whole failed to capture the 'feel' of early music. The best way to describe it is to say... it's like not putting the accent on the right syllable. As a church musician myself I can notice the lack of detail, but to those true Sting fans out there, I think you will enjoy his latest and most lovely rendering.

    Sting still has it

by Paulllll on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

I wasn't sure what to expect from this concert but was very pleased with his performance. He still has his great voice. I would also like to say, he picked a great place to perform. St John the Holy Divine is an amazing cathedral.

by Plgr on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

This was my first visit to the Cathedral and as expected not only it was a great performance by Sting and all the musicians but the sound was one of the best I have heard at a live performance.

Not enough Chris Botti as special guest

by VirginiaC on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

Sting was awesome at the Cathedral...I really enjoyed it however for this event Chris Botti was billed as the special guest and he was on stage for all of probably 2 mins. I was highly disappointed - I am a huge fan of both and I was truly looking forward to seeing them preform together at least 3 songs. A very huge disappointment. It would have been fine if it was just publicized as Sting and Chris Botti showed up for 2 mins...but this was not the case.

A really great way to see Sting live

by fanofsting on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

Stings new tour "A Winter's Night" was amazing. It was not like any other concert. He incorporated members of his orchestra from around the world, introduced them all (where they're from, etc) and made it a very personal event. Before he played each song he told you the story behind it which was very enlightening. It was a very mellow event - the music and Stings voice set an overall calm about the evening and it was so enjoyable. I would definitely see him again in this setting.

    A very special winter's night

by GRUB212 on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

A once in a lifetime performance in a perfect setting for winter's music, handpicked and (sometimes) rearranged by an artist who clearly has nothing less than the utmost respect for what he has chosen to play. Plus, all the wonderful musicians backing Sting made it even better. This would be a terrific annual tradition.

    Memorable night!

by LongtimeFanj24 on 12/9/09The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - New York

Last night I was fortunate enough to be in the audience for Sting's performance from his newest CD "A Winter's Night". I brought my 17 year old son, Jake, with me. Both of us have seen Sting in concert many times. Yes, Jake started his concert going by seeing Sting at a Rainforest Benefit Concert when he was around 7 years old. Sting's music and lyrics have always been an important part of our lives and this show provided new and memorable moments for both of us. Sting's voice range is phenomenal and his musicians amazing. The brother and sister members from Newcastle were just wonderful. Jake regrets not following through with his violin lessons from elementary school, because he was awed by their talent. Chris Botti...need I say more....CHRIS BOTTI! The renditions of the songs from the CD along with Sting's explanations started our Christmas season in a serene and spiritual way and the setting in St. John the Divine's was the icing on the cake. It was an event to remember and I thank all the musicians and of course, Sting, for his incredbile talent and his consistency is providing the world with a variety of musical genres, opening the eyes of many to all the types of music from around the world. You never disappoint us...I am happy that I was able to be a part of this rare performance.

    Impressive Sting!

by jpdubz on 7/23/09The MGM Grand at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

Sting in the MGM Grand Theater was way better than I thought he could be. I was expecting a nice, mature concert, but got a pretty rockin' event instead! The crowd was very appreciative of Sting's efforts to make the old hits sound like we remembered them, but with a "new" twist. And he really wowed us with 6 or 7 encores. A GREAT SHOW (the band with him is phenomenal too!)!

Sting concert was the best yet!

by StephPnCT on 7/23/09The MGM Grand at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

I have seen Sting in concert several times and this was the best concert yet! It amazes me that he can make his "old" hits new and even better by changing up the arrangements. His band was just awesome.

    the master

by envatt on 7/23/09The MGM Grand at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

This amazing performer has mastered so many genres, rhythms, moods, feelings, and all using intricate music and lyrics that stand the test of time. His voice was in fine form and the magnificent musicians who accompanied him were nothing short of miraculous--special kudos to the pianist who literally sounded as if he had 40 fingers instead of only 10! The audience was comprised of Sting devotees, who all knew what was coming ,but revelled in the intensity of each moment. The concert ended too soon---because no number of encores would have ever been sufficient. I can't wait to see him again
