About

Considering the astonishing gifts he has already given us through his music, do we even have the right to expect any more from Stevie Wonder? Maybe, maybe not, but the truth is the artist whose first No. 1 hit came five decades ago with "Fingertips" is in the midst of a creative explosion akin with his greatest years in the 1970's. For his first studio recordings in eight years, Wonder, the rare touring act who can be called genius without qualification, has produced not one but two records, both as distinct in their origin as they are in their intention. To fulfill a promise made to his mother who passed away in 2006, Wonder is making he first foray into gospel music; he's also making an additional record that reflects not only his growing interest in hip-hop but also personal heartbreak stemming from among other things his recent divorce.

But none of this should indicate that the Motown legend is turning his back on his monumental legacy. The owner of over 50 top 40 singles has recently taken to thrilling ticket buyers by playing the entirety of his 1976 diamond selling classic Songs in the Key of Life live in concert. It is a rare that in our lifetime a legend of Stevie Wonder's stature could find equal inspiration reaching into the future as well as the past. It is rarer still that he is able to share his joyous visions in all their power with anyone fortunate enough to catch this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer on tour.

    Disappointed

by Cavin1 on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

I am Stevie's biggest fan and have seen him numerous times including his last show in Atlanta. But to come on stage 90 minutes late is inexcusable. From that point on it killed the mood of a wonderful night. Sure, it was a fine show but the magic was not there.

    Good but started very late

by MikeTee on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

Stevie put on a great show all in all, he had members of the audience come up on stage and perform with him, he had a terminaly ill teen on stage with him the whole time, he had Wednesday's child up on stage to do a rap, did his little prayer thing before starting and had great musicians with him. We had to leave before the end for babysitter reasons but onlyu because they started the show around 9:30pm (1.5 hours late)

    Stevie was not a wonder!

by Pen1226 on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

The concert was horrible! Without any explanation, he was 1-1/2 hours late in starting. He then talked about his political and racial beliefs, and when looking at his watch, he stated "so I'm late, sue me". A total lack of respect and appreciation for all us fans who put him on that stage. There was a lot of audience singing and he didn't sing many of his well-known hits. The venue has a hard stop at 11pm, so he barely gave a 1-1/2 hour concert, if you want to call it that. I wanted to hear Stevie sing - not the audience, not a man he took out of the audience. I wouldn't see him again if he was playing in my back yard!

    Not worth the wait

by moonshine on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

This man saw fit to make the people who put him where he is today a nearly three hours; 50 minutes to enter the amphitheatre and another hour and 50 minutes for the show to start. His explanation? He gave a little giggle and made a comment about being "a little late." I will never purchase any Stevie Wonder cd nor see a show and I will share our experience in the coming months. Shame on you, Mr. Wonder! Your show was DREADFUL.

    NOT Wonderful

by JKRubenstein on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

The concert started 90 minutes late and the first 10 minutes were spent with Stevie Wonder preaching about God and racism and Obama. Then he brought one some teenager who has cancer and spent 10 minutes talking about how unfair this situation was and about how was dedicating this concert to this kid. The net is that music was finally played around 10pm. During the concert, he forgot the words to songs on a few occasions and had to start over. He spent far too much time doing sophomoric cat calls with the audience and using electronic voice synthesizers which made his voice sound horrible. He combined 3 or 4 of his best known hits into one medley that lasted less than 5 minutes and then sat and watched as people from the crowd went on stage and sang full versions of his songs. All-in-all, it was the worst concert I have ever been to and I will never consider seeing Stevie Wonder live again.

    Stevie Wonder is a legend

by Deh4108 on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

This was one of the best concerts I've attended in a long time. Stevie Wonder performed all of his classics that took me all the way back to my childhood. It was "wonder"ful. I recommend any and all Stevie Wonder fans to attend.

Ribbon In the Sky was simply unforgettable!

by Conway on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

Stevie was a great entertainer!!! I think what made the show great was Stevie's introduction with Leo. This demonstrated his humility and gift of giving back. He not only satisfied the crowd and made everyones evening but he made a night to remember for a young man who is fighting for his life. I wish all of the entertainers would give back to the community in some way just as Stevie Wonder has done and continues to do.

    Stevie Wonder was a disappointment

by Quickdraw on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

I guess my negativity starts with the fact I do not think Stevie respected us an audience. We arrived 45 mins. before the concert start time (8 pm) and waited in line, with no explanation, for 35 mins while he completed his warm ups. Once admitted, he was 75 mins late in starting the concert...and of course ending it late. While I understand he was back stage with the young cancer patient, who appeared on stage - I am stil baffled why he was late. Their is no questioning Stevie talent, but I thought his music selection was more for his preference than his paying audience. Much of it was improvised ( or at least seemed to be) - and while I appreciate that artist do not want to always play their old hits - we expect to hear the music we love and recognize.

    Stevie Wonder is still amazing!

by roha on 7/15/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

This was my first concert at the new Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta and it was AMAZING!! After all these years, Stevie Wonder appears to still be having fun! He was energetic, positive, funny, entertaining and involved the audience with sing-a-longs. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. My only complaint would be the "mile hike" from the parking area to the actual venue.

    Couldn't get enough

by Memories on 7/7/09kodak, gibson theatre, nokia - Los Angeles

I've attended 5 Christmas concert events and each was something that helped me to remember the blessings of life and carried me through the year to come. It is so awesome to see such a great composer/singer right before your very eyes in complete authentic and humble form. Every year is exciting anticipation of who is going to perform along side him and I yet to be disappointed. The only disapointment is not having the music go on longer! If your thinkig about attending this concert take along childhood friends or the family because you want to have someone beside you to hang onto. Thanks Stevie. Just want you to know your the best in my book!
