STEVEN WILSON IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting beloved groups like Porcupine Tree and No-Man to his acclaimed recent solo work, prog rock veteran Steven Wilson has been a beacon of experimentation and innovation in British music. Wilson's extremely diverse musical past is ever-present on his fourth solo effort, 2015's Hand. Cannot. Erase., an ambitious concept album that features a staggering range of musical styles, instruments, and affects. The through line of both the album and Wilson's marathon live shows is his technical virtuosity and willingness to take risks, a quality that makes his epic performances supremely exciting affairs. From jaw-dropping solos and extended breakdowns to Wilson's signature barefooted stage moves, ticket buyers can expect an electrifying and unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in suburban London, Steven Wilson traces his love of music back to the first LPs he received as a Christmas gift from his parents -- Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby. By 11 he was playing the guitar and experimenting with a multi-track tape machine and a vocoder built by his electronic engineer father. Wilson played in various prog and experimental groups during his teens, and in 1986 he started the two projects that would define his early success: No-Man, a rock and synthpop outfit and Porcupine Tree, an experimental psychedelic rock band. By 1990 No-Man was generating major buzz, landing several singles on Melody Maker's coveted Single of the Week list including a cover of Donovan's "Colours". At the same time, Wilson's more experimental work with Porcupine Tree was also gaining underground success with a series of extremely limited releases that remain coveted cult classics today. Wilson began releasing solo material in 2003, starting with a series of cover albums before releasing his official solo debut album Insurgentes in 2008. Since then he has released three more albums including 2015's highly anticipated Hand. Cannot. Erase, a critically acclaimed album collection that fans are eager to see performed live.

    Amazing

by Perception on 11/17/11Best Buy Theater - New York

I could not imagine all the work from both albums can be presented in such harmony and extraordinary detail. Boy, was I wrong. Not only was it well rehearsed and presented but the flow of music took us thru the entire concert standing after almost two hours asking: is it over already? I wish we will be able to see them again soon!

Steven is incredible. We travel half way across the country to see him and is well worth the trip. He is a genius and never disappoints.

Amazing performance at a fantastic venue

by ti175 on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

What can you say about Steven Wilson that hasn't already been said? Brilliant musician. And I loved the Berklee Performance Center. Nice and intimate, and fantastic sound and sight lines.

    Excellent artist, annoying venue policies

by ti175 on 11/15/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Steven Wilson put on a great show. Not much more to say - he's a musical genius, and his band was fantastic. Especially drummer Marco Minneman. The venue - the Best Buy Theater - was very nice. Great sound, good sitelines. However, the security is a bit ridiculous. I walked in with a satchel that had a few small items, and they *made* me coat check it. For $6. Are you kidding me? I stuffed everything in my pockets, and carried the satchel in my hand. $8 for a can of Heineken. Really?? Doors at 7. In other cities, the show started promptly at 8. Here, they delayed the start of the show until 9:30. Why? Presumably, so lots of people would have to purchase more $8 cans of beer.......

    Steven Wilson at his Best!

by Thermington on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Amazing is an understatement, when the band members came out one by one and he started orchestrating them with his hands, he picks up the guitar and they all kick in to "No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun", the build up alone gave me chills.

    Steven Wilson Was Incredible

by jayspam on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Great music, 6 awesome musicians with unbelievable talent. The venue, which is designed for good sound quality, really made a difference. The sound was perfect. The music had lots of highs and lows (dynamics) to it, so a good quality room was important.

    Just a great production

by thesixtheuclid on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

From the translucent curtain which peeled away halfway through the show to the lights to the video in the background to Steven Wilson's guitars, this show was a very carefully constructed production, aesthetic both to watch and hear. Steven Wilson and the accompanying musicians blew us out of the water. His company included John Wesley--Porcupine Tree's touring partner in the U.S.--which enhanced the show that much more. The clarity of sound was unreal--it may as well have been a studio version of the album. Would recommend to anyone who enjoyed Grace For Drowning.

    He just keeps getting better

by fuzzy42 on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

If you expected to see a PT show you would have been a little disappointed. Steve did play 4 PT songs which were of course great; the majority of the music was from his latest solo project which were fantastic. My best attempt to explain his solo efforts to non-PT fans is he deconstructs a melody into industrial noise and then reconstructs it all to your delight.

    Great but different

by BlueBrummie on 11/15/11Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Steve Wilson is a fantastic performer. A true triple threat - singer, song writer, musician. This show was a bit different than his other projects (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, etc). Not having heard the CD, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed. The music was a dynamic mix of rock, jazz, and some blue. Solo acoustics juxtaposed against heavily distorted guitar and in your face rhythms. Still learning the new CD and letting it settle in. From a performance perspective, I'd rate the show 4.5 out of 5. The music, light show, graphics were typical Steve Wilson - EXCELLENT on all fronts. Berklee is a great venue to see a show like this. Not exactly intimate, but damn close.

Steven Wilson and his band were unreal!!

by Tust312 on 11/15/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Steven and his band had such a great jazzy/progressive rock sound. They were really tight! SOOOO many time changes! It was great to see John Wesley (Porcupine Tree) touring with him in North America! It was so good, I saw the shows in New York and Philadelphia! Loved it!!

Great show - Worst Venue (Best-Buy Theater)

by BobbyRacecar on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Steven Wilson is an extraordinary musician, composer and performer. I've seen him numerous times as the lead of Porcupine tree, with Avi Geffin in Blackfield and now as himself with a new group of musicians. He never fails to impress. Since the first time I saw him in 1995, till now, he never gets stale. He's always pushing the boundaries. I would recommend his work to anyone who has a deep appreciation for music. Not Pop music, but the kind of music that can transcend the normal, yet still be grounded in general appeal. I will however think twice about ever going to a show at the BestBuy (ex Nokia) theater. The management held the show up for an hour and a half. The tickets said doors open at 7 pm and showtime at 8pm (11/11/11). Through no fault of Mr Wilson or his staff and crew, the management of the theater held them back from taking the stage till 9:30. During the entire time, coming through the house speakers, was this endless loop of a droning sound. No seats available so some of us stood for 2 1/2 hours with no announcements or explanation. On top of that, the event security staff were extremely intense with inappropriately negative attitudes for the the mood of the crowd, who even after an interminable wait, remained calm and respectful. When the actions of the event staff becomes a significant part of what one remembers about an event, then they were out of line. I recommend that people avoid going to shows a this venue.

    steven wilson does it again....

by audiomoose on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Steven Wilson put together a new lineup for this show and reached new heights of his quite prolific career. The musicians he picked were all superb. Whether he called it Porcupine Tree or another name, the music sounded straight out of that band's repertoire. Great sound. Just wish we didn't have to stand for 4 hours or wait so long for them to come on. No opening act, just some esoteric slides, no doubt from Steven Wilson. Great show.

    Steven Wilson - musical genius

by FungusAmongus on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

The show went off spectacularly. The intro was pretty cool in the way the musicians were introduced one by one and immediately joined in on the track being played, then the final track ended the same way, symmetrically one by one each musician left the stage. Overall loved the selected tracks and the musicianship. I was really impressed by his drummer. He showed great control and finesse when required but also jammed it out hard when needed. Overall a really enjoyable experience. My only gripe is the intro. The tickets said doors at 7 so I expected the show to start at 8 or 8:30 latest. Needless to say, standing there for an hour then listening to drone music for another hour and a half was not my idea of a fun time. End rant.

    Steven Wilson Grace for Drowning

by rsbarch on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Exceptional show, Steven Wilson is probably one of the most complete musicians recording or touring these days. the show was a musical and visual extravaganza, from subtle acoustic passages to a full on wall of sound set at 11. The theaters idea to have everyone standing around from doors at 7, show at 8 on the tickets for the band to come on at 9;30 was a little tedious as it was a General Admission show with no seats. I guess they wanted to keep the bartenders busy. Steven wilson apologized to fans on FB the next day for a timing situation out of his control, but the incredible show more than made up for it!!

    Fantastic show

by StevebutnotthefirstSteve on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

The music was great, and all the musicians were great. Marco Minnemann was fantastic! The only (big) negative about this show was that Best Buy Theater would not allow the band to come on before 9:30 PM (trying to get more alcohol and concession sales?), even though the start time was listed as 8 PM. No announcements were made. Just everyone standing around for an hour and a half wondering what was happening. It was bad enough that I'll think twice about seeing another show there (unless, of course, it is a great band... but I will show up late, not early).
