ANIMALS AS LEADERS IN CONCERT:

Apex predators Animals as Leaders represent the next evolution in progressive metal with their bone crushing power, lightning speed, and mind-blowing creativity. In concert, Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes both play massive 8-string guitars that allow them to hold down crushing bass lines and soaring leads simultaneously. Reyes tends to handle more of the low-end duties while Abasi shreds furiously over the top, a master of both syncopated complexity and direct melodicism. Drummer Matt Garstka pounds out massive rhythms, fluid transitions, and furious fills to keep ticket buyers’ heads banging throughout AAL’s epic sets. Fresh off the 2014 release of The Joy of Motion and touring with the likes of Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist, Animals as Leaders are continuing their climb up the heavy metal food chain.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Animals as Leaders formed in Washington, D.C. in 2007 when Tosin Abasi left his previous band Reflux. Prosthetic Records noticed his prodigious talent and offered to produce an instrumental album of his guitar work. Instead of taking the generous offer, he opted to hone his skills at the Atlanta Institute of Music, which took his playing to staggering new heights. He recorded Animals as Leaders’ self-titled debut in 2009, immediately attracting attention in guitar circles due to his unprecedented and unconventional gift for rhythm, melody, and harmony. Abasi found a talented guitar foil in Javier Reyes, who joined AAL in 2009 to ease the transition from recording project to touring band. Drummer Matt Garstka solidified their lineup in time for their 2012 tour schedule and held down the drums for the group’s critically praised third album The Joy of Motion (2014).

  • Amazing music, subpar venue management

by Ben DeUrso on 11/20/24Summit - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I love Plini and Animals As Leaders and worked very hard to get to this show. I originally had tickets to go in Boston but I ended up having to travel so I made sure I attended the Denver date so I didn't miss this tour. The music itself being phenomenal, the venue somehow managed to make this show challenging and difficult. I got on line at 7:30pm. Doors had opened at 7pm, and yet 30 minutes after doors, there still remained 300 or so people outside that were not in the venue. This line trickled and we did not get in for a full hour. Meanwhile, the show, whose lineup is only 2 bands, did not push the time at all, so as we are miserably cold waiting online, we hear Plini start playing. We missed half of his set. Venue management was at an all time low. There was a random venue employee pacing the line giving out some wristbands/checking ID's in a very disparate fashion. Anyone who had received it was stilll checked just as thoroughly later. We finally got in and managed to see the second half of Plini's set. I felt that Plini got somewhat the short end of the stick. Over 300 people were stuck outside while the venue grappled with the crowd, of what seemed to be an oversold venue. It was incredibly crowded inside, but still so many more were stuck outside. With there only being 2 bands on the bill, it didn't make sense to me that they wouldn't push the start time of the opening band to accommodate. Musically, seeing Plini come out for the first time with AAL during The Brain Dance encore was amazing! And hearing Crescent and The Future That Awaited Me and Glass Bead Game was incredible!

  • Good show in a good venu

by Robert on 11/18/24The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

Animals as Leaders is a metal jazz band. The Fillmore is a medium sized venue in Silver Spring, MD. This show was great and the venue was adequate. I do appreciate the upgraded PA system they got within the past year.

  • The best of math rock!

by Michael on 11/15/24The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

As always, Animals as Leaders prove that they are at the top of their game. Animals fans are both rabid and reverent for their music, and the band never fails to honour that fact by playing their songs about as close to studio perfect as you can get. Not only that, the light show elevates the experience to another level. This is the one band that I make sure I never miss whenever they come around. Even the person I brought along, who is not a math rock fan, and had never listened to Animals, had a brilliant time! No matter your taste, do yourself a favour and see Animals as Leaders in concert, because it's the best way to experience their music

  • Animals Were Leaders!!

by brewster on 11/15/24The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

An Amazing show by Animals As Leaders!! The band was tight and played extremely well. Tosin was on his game and communicated his appreciation for the crowd throughout the concert. The sound and ight show were great. The opening act Plini were very good. The venue should have had floor seating instead of GA. Hopefully, Animals As Leaders don't wait another 8 years.

  • Intense

by Jaytc123 on 11/15/24The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Both bands, Plini and Aniimals as Leaders, we're incredibly intensive. The energy level was through the roof. It was a packed house at the danforth. Cannot wait for them to come back again.
