About

STEVEN WILSON IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting beloved groups like Porcupine Tree and No-Man to his acclaimed recent solo work, prog rock veteran Steven Wilson has been a beacon of experimentation and innovation in British music. Wilson's extremely diverse musical past is ever-present on his fourth solo effort, 2015's Hand. Cannot. Erase., an ambitious concept album that features a staggering range of musical styles, instruments, and affects. The through line of both the album and Wilson's marathon live shows is his technical virtuosity and willingness to take risks, a quality that makes his epic performances supremely exciting affairs. From jaw-dropping solos and extended breakdowns to Wilson's signature barefooted stage moves, ticket buyers can expect an electrifying and unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in suburban London, Steven Wilson traces his love of music back to the first LPs he received as a Christmas gift from his parents -- Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby. By 11 he was playing the guitar and experimenting with a multi-track tape machine and a vocoder built by his electronic engineer father. Wilson played in various prog and experimental groups during his teens, and in 1986 he started the two projects that would define his early success: No-Man, a rock and synthpop outfit and Porcupine Tree, an experimental psychedelic rock band. By 1990 No-Man was generating major buzz, landing several singles on Melody Maker's coveted Single of the Week list including a cover of Donovan's "Colours". At the same time, Wilson's more experimental work with Porcupine Tree was also gaining underground success with a series of extremely limited releases that remain coveted cult classics today. Wilson began releasing solo material in 2003, starting with a series of cover albums before releasing his official solo debut album Insurgentes in 2008. Since then he has released three more albums including 2015's highly anticipated Hand. Cannot. Erase, a critically acclaimed album collection that fans are eager to see performed live.

no seats and two hours of torturous ambient "music

by cmeltz on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Very turned off at theaters policy of closing the seated section because the show wasn't sold out. Had to wait 2 1/2 hours for show to begin with Steven Wilson's "ambient music" playing unrelentingly. Then when the show finally started, he had the audacity to leave an opaque curtain down for the first 4 songs! Ridiculous! Also, the speaker where I was located sounded broken and distorted. Music was good, but certainly not to the standards of porcupine tree or blackfield.

Next time a different venue please

by Buddha1 on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

I've waited for Steven Wilson to tour solo for awhile and was really looking forward to it. Little did I know that I would have to wait hours in a standing venue for the show to begin. The show started at 9:30pm after the doors opened at 7pm. There was no explanation given at the time. The crowd was restless to say the least. The next day Wilson posted that it was the venue's decision, not his, to start so late. Musically, he and his band were very good but not exceptional. If there is a second leg, play somewhere else. Town Hall would have been perfect for a show like this.

Steven Wilson & Band = incredible

by aliboz on 11/14/11Best Buy Theater - New York

This show was absolutely breathtaking...the 1.5 hour tardiness of the band (which was due to the venue not allowing them to perform until they attempted to extract all the $$$ via bar drinks possible...) did not affect my review of the band..only the venue...very disappointed in the Best Buy Theatre. The musicianship of Steven Wilson was so incredible, I felt like it was a once in a lifetime experience (hopefully not!)...beautiful sound and incredible musicians.

Raw skill was demonstrated at this showing

by Ecrium on 11/13/11Best Buy Theater - New York

Besides waiting forever for the show to start, and having a lack of an opening band, Steven Wilson and his lineup mostly of porcupine tree members were still able to get a large rise out of our crowd by blowing our minds, even more so with the themed encore, going to wait in line an hour and a half early won me front row railing standing.

    Great show

by AbeNYC on 11/13/11Best Buy Theater - New York

I have to say that the songs from SW's two solo albums sound much better live than on the CD. This was a really great show, on par with a Porcupine Tree concert. The band played the first half of the show from behind a transparent curtain onto which videos were projected - a novel approach, and it worked great. My favorite song (No Twilight Within The Courts of The Sun) was played first, but the rest of set list didn't disappoint.

Great night of super prog rock/jazz . Add Steve Wilson to the musical genius category with others such as Fripp, Jon & Ian Anderson , P. Gabriel, Lee, Lifeson, Peart, and more as this show was amazing and superb. Thanks Steven

    Awesome!!

by grace82 on 11/13/11Best Buy Theater - New York

It was huge! I really enjoyed it! The show begun 9:30 instead of 8:00, so naturally I was tired when the show begun. The crowd couldn't hold it anymore, and they cried!! I want to the show because my friend in Paris recommended to me, I didn't know them before. But as soon as they begun the performance, I was imported immediately. It was exceptional, fantastic music and powerful stage! Very inventive and advanced music made me amaze!! I'll definitely recommend to my friends!

Porcupine Tree Great, Steven Wilson Solo? ...So So

by Whoer on 11/13/11Best Buy Theater - New York

As a die hard Porcupine Tree fan, I can't say enough about Steven Wilson's talent. But I think maybe he's been hanging out watching Fripp fiddle with his synthesizer knobs a bit too much lately. I mean, what's with the hour and a half of droning noise and fuzzy images before the much delayed appearance of the band on stage? Was that supposed to be an opening act??? Was there a mosquito problem at The Best Buy Theatre or was that net in front of the stage there to protect the band from the beer bottles that were about to be thrown if that hour and a half of noise continued one minute longer??? And as far as The Best Buy Theatre's General Admission Standing policy, their website FAQ states that some seats would be available on a first come first serve basis, but none were. My 55 year old knees are still hurting from standing for 4 hours. Never again at a standing event at Best Buy Theatre for me. They just lost a customer.
