STEVE WINWOOD IN CONCERT:

Rock icon Steve Winwood continues to inspire with his soulful voice and authentic songwriting more than half a century after his debut. At his live shows Winwood touches on every period of his long and storied career, treating fans to favorites from his time with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith before going on to perform '80s solo hits like "Higher Love" and "Roll With It". A virtuoso musician who surrounds himself with one of the best backing bands in the business, Winwood never fails to do justice to do his beloved classics justice on his must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born to a musical family in Birmingham, England, Steve Winwood was performing music with his older brother and father by the age of eight. He immersed himself in the city's rhythm and blues scene while still in high school, and at age 14 he joined blue-eyed soul outfit the Spence Davis Group. He recorded several hits with the group before helping form prog rock outfit Traffic, with which he also had several hits. Winwood launched his solo career in 1977 with a self-titled debut album, and in 1980 he scored his first hit with the single "While You See a Chance" from the album Arc of Diver. He continued to release successful albums throughout the '80s, racking up several No. 1 singles including "Higher Love" and "The Finer Things". With nine solo albums under his belt and numerous releases from former projects, Winwood has plenty of classic material to draw from for his career-spanning sets while on tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The strength of Steve Winwood's voice has not diminished one iota over the years. His band was as tight as lightning and the jam sessions paired with each of his tunes were INCREDIBLE!"

"His voice is still so soulful and amazing. His band is as tight as ever as they have been touring together for a while now. They like to indulge in extended, jazzy jams which give everyone in the band a chance to shine."

"A man of incredible talent, with an outstanding band. His voice is not that different from 40 years ago. Played a nice selection of old and newer. Well worth seeing."

    Winwood was awsome

by BrewIT on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The show was beyond my expectations. Steve still maintains all of his wonderful abilities both singing and playing music at a superb level many years after his original recordings. He is so on his gme it's incredible. Very high energy show for the full 2 hours. Not familiar with most of his band members but they provided a very tight performance and did the music justice. The multi-talented horn, percussion and keyboard player was excellent. The congo player - well - amazing. Enjoyed the show thoroughly!!

    Back in the High Life

by fryguy on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I can't believe this guy played for 2 hours straight at the age of 61. Most of the songs were in the original key also, meaning that he hasn't lost his range like a lot of pop/rock performers do. That's encouraging, as I am a singer, also. His band was hot. The guy who played tenor sax also played several other instruments equally well, and sang harmony and lead on a couple of notes. The Drummer was probably the most impressive to me. His rhythms were intricate, always in time, and physically demanding. This guy played all night like he was 25, and he could have been my father. WOW!

by karcher on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

He feels his music like he is singing it for the very first time and you feel that as an audience member. Played straight for two hours--wish it had been more he has so many great songs. Just saw it last night and would love to see him again tonight.

    Not Just an Organist!

by Anonymous on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Once again Stevie showed his virtuosity on the organ, guitar and vocals. His voice has lost little of its edge and brought back memories of his lead work with his previous bands. His rendition of Mr. Fantasy was truly memorable with his guitar expertise taking center stage, as it should. He is truly an overlooked guitarist of his (and my) generation. One of the newer songs, Higher Ground, was a pleasant surprise and showed he still has the ability to crank out "old time rock and roll" tunes. My next stop is iTunes to look it up. Two disappointments. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys was nearly unrecognizable except for the vocals and the keyboards on Gimme Some Lovin' seemed to be off key, which distracted from the overall party atmosphere of the latter song. As for the Durham Performing Arts Center. What can you say. Durham, NC out did itself. I had never attended an event there before and was stunned that I was sitting in Durham. All hyperbole aside, the DPAC is a world-class facility.

    Steve Winwood still rocks!

by drjams on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steve Winwood and his tight band served up a great show at the Durham Performing Arts Center last night. Covering his amazing career he played songs old, new, and in between. From Light Up which featured an amazing jam session with every band member having solos to Low Spark to Dear Mr Fantasy to a funky Higher Love to Gimme Some Lovin' and many more Winwood showcased his amazing voice and musicianship throughout the night!

    Steve Winwood can still ROCK!

by Fabfourfan on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

He's still got it, that's for sure! It was amazing how he still sounds as good if not better than 40 years ago. And still looks great! What an awsome band too! He's surrounded himself with very talented musicians that really rocked the house. One guy (gotta get his name) played about 5 different instruments and each of them flawlessly! The only problem was it seemed to be over too soon. I thought they were taking an intermission, but it was almost over. Two hours flew by in a rockin' blur!

    Winwood Rocked!

by JSee on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The band was tight and Winwood's voice is excellent. There is no stage show, they just play! All of the members were impressive and the sound, where I was, was very good.
