STEVE WINWOOD IN CONCERT:

Rock icon Steve Winwood continues to inspire with his soulful voice and authentic songwriting more than half a century after his debut. At his live shows Winwood touches on every period of his long and storied career, treating fans to favorites from his time with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith before going on to perform '80s solo hits like "Higher Love" and "Roll With It". A virtuoso musician who surrounds himself with one of the best backing bands in the business, Winwood never fails to do justice to do his beloved classics justice on his must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born to a musical family in Birmingham, England, Steve Winwood was performing music with his older brother and father by the age of eight. He immersed himself in the city's rhythm and blues scene while still in high school, and at age 14 he joined blue-eyed soul outfit the Spence Davis Group. He recorded several hits with the group before helping form prog rock outfit Traffic, with which he also had several hits. Winwood launched his solo career in 1977 with a self-titled debut album, and in 1980 he scored his first hit with the single "While You See a Chance" from the album Arc of Diver. He continued to release successful albums throughout the '80s, racking up several No. 1 singles including "Higher Love" and "The Finer Things". With nine solo albums under his belt and numerous releases from former projects, Winwood has plenty of classic material to draw from for his career-spanning sets while on tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The strength of Steve Winwood's voice has not diminished one iota over the years. His band was as tight as lightning and the jam sessions paired with each of his tunes were INCREDIBLE!"

"His voice is still so soulful and amazing. His band is as tight as ever as they have been touring together for a while now. They like to indulge in extended, jazzy jams which give everyone in the band a chance to shine."

"A man of incredible talent, with an outstanding band. His voice is not that different from 40 years ago. Played a nice selection of old and newer. Well worth seeing."

    GREAT show!

by TriciaandRick on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The sound started out a little muffled (not bad) but by the third song or so it was like everything went into sonic focus. Since this was the first stop on the tour, that is pretty impressive work by the sound guys. As to the band, this is a great group, capable of powerful rock and roll one minute and subtle interwoven jams the next. These guys aren't just virtuoso musicians: they thrive on playing together and jamming in a framework of subtle textures. Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi would have loved it. Intimate venue was excellent and an added plus: they started on time and didn't let up for 2 hours!

    Superb set; disappointing sound work

by Vaval on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

    1. The performance was virtuoso, incredibly rich and textured. The group assembled for this tour is musically superb. 2. The mixing was problematical. It did not weight Steve Winwood's voice sufficiently. 3. The volume was, overall, about twice that needed. The end result was that because the volume was too high the nuances of the various instruments (including Steve Winwood's voice) were blurred and smeared. An unnecessary and aggravating dilution of a superb performance. 4. Rule #1 about iconic songs--here--Higher Life. Don't mess with them!! Higher Life has been re-arranged, and not for the better; the group should remember the cardinal rule that lifelong fans of a song want it played the way they remember it. The dissonant chords introduced by the lead guitar destroyed the song.

    Steve Winwood

The show was awesome! The venue was wonderful. Upon arriving at the Durham Performing Arts Center., we were welcomed and treated as invited guests. We've attended several concerts during the past year, and I will have to say that this was the best venue of all! I've never been to a venue and felt as welcome. Steve Winwood and those who played with him are truly awesome performers!

    Steve Winwood

by Giovanina on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I bought these tickets as a birthday gift for my husband, who has been a Steve Winwood fan for many years. I often heard him play his Steve Winwood CDs in our home . He said it was the best concert he has ever gone to. He was a little disappointed in the sound system - said it was muddy - not clear, but the musicians were right on. I have never seen him so engrossed as he was last night. I couldn't have gotten him a better birthday gift.

Steve Winwood left the radio hits behind

by raegene on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steve is a great musician. He played numerous instruments and did and outstanding job. He opened with "I'm a man" and closed with "Give me so lovin" Both sounded as great and fresh as ever. I would have liked to have heard more of the hits. He did a lot of Traffic and some new stuff. One new song was great. Will have to find it on itunes.

The Amazing Steve Winwood and Band!

by iufan35 on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Great venue, audience, and band!! He still has a great voice and was surrounded by a group of fine musicians. They played most of the new album and a lot of oldies.

    Steve Winwood nailed it

by gvillemusicfan on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steve and his band put on a grade 'A' performance. The supporting musicians are all top notch and showed with the 'Light It Up' tune. His song selection showcased all greatest hits. Just superb !

    Disappointing

by tp33 on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Solid start and finish (both his Spencer Davis Group hits, incidentally), but the hits were too few, and the songs were too long. I dropped $100 for what amounted to an extended jam session. Talented man with a talented band, but the set was very thin. Even "Higher Love" was mutilated beyond recognition. Still like SW but will never drop $$$ to see him live again.

    Steve Winwood was INCREDIBLE!

by Princess27 on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steve Winwood and the musicians accompanying him were absolute fantastic. The man is a keyboard master, and it was WONDERFUL to hear the incredible sound of a perfectly played Hammond B3 organ! The show was tight and beautifully orchestrated, and the band totally captured the audience. I've been to a LOT of concerts, but this one really pulled me - was so mesmerized and "one with the music", and that is attributable to the exceptional talent and performance skills of Winwood and company. Winwood was fantastic on guitar, too! I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to see this rock legend in person - and to hear the pure sheer power of a Hammond B3 again. The DPAC venue was great, too. The only thing I would say is "allow pictures" sometimes. As it was, people were using their cell phones to take photos, and I wish I'd had an opportunity to get some photos. Also - it would have been really nice to have a playbill or something from the performance to add to my collection. Overall, this Winwood performance was beyond A+. The only song missing from the program which I would really wanted to hear was, "The Finer Things".

Steve Winwood & his band -absolutely amazing!!

by moonunit on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

He played mostly old stuff from Traffic, and some Blind Faith and Spencer Davis. A couple of tunes from solo career. His voice is still amazing! He and the other 4 musicians were incredible and added a little funky to a lot of old favorites!

It was a little too jazy to show off the amazing talents of the band. I would prefer a better mix of what was offered and the softer side of their work.

Too damn loud. I've been to other events at DPAC and thought they had controlled this issue. The acoustics at DPAC are too good to have music ruined by high decibels.

    Great jam of a show!

by Tandy on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I loved the Winwood show. Both guitarists (Steve was one of them) sounded great. The two percussionists were outstanding. An excellent show and it looked great from my 3rd row seat.

The venue was great. The concert, no so much. I felt like I had traveled back in time to the 70's. Winwood played lots of extended jams on songs that were vaguely familiar. He played all the songs on a B3, no piano, synths, etc. No bass player, all bass lines were played on the foot pedals of the B3. All in all I felt like I was watching a jam session in someones garage with a few buddies that were all mediocre and forgettable musicians, including SW.

    The voice is still there

by Bleumatics on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

How Steve Winwood keeps his high voice in such good shape is a mystery of the universe. I couldn't hear a missed note. Truly amazing. This show was the first stop on a limited US tour, which appears to be warm up for the tour of Europe with Clapton in summer. There was no stage set and no opening act - just five musicians and their instruments. I saw the show in the Durham (NC) Performing Arts Center, which is reasonably small for a concert hall, so it was almost a clublike setting. Very little performer chatter between songs. They just got up there and played, and the highlights were extended solos from each of the band members. These guys are good. The music was more rythmic than I expected - I'd seen Traffic years ago and expected some moody, textural pieces, but apparently SW has been on a world music kick, and even the old tunes had a polyrythmic kick to them this time around. This limited tour is good chance to see and hear Winwood without the distraction of a big stage. if you're into spectacle, pass on this one, but if you'd like to see and hear a group of really fine musicians in their living room, go.

    Great concert for Early Winwood

by dgmoore44 on 2/10/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Great evening to relive some of Winwoods early work. Blind Faith and Traffic were the mainstay of the evening. I had no idea Winwood was such a good guitarist. I had always thought of him as a keyboard man.
