About

The Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe award winning co-creator of The Office and Extras (both for BBC) is embarking on his first ever stand-up comedy tour STEPHEN MERCHANT LIVE: HELLO LADIES...

Globally known for his acclaimed collaborative work with partner Ricky Gervais, Merchant has at last decided to take his considerable stand-up talents on the road.  It's not widely known he started his career as a stand-up comedian and radio presenter - at XFM where he met Gervais.  In 2001, Merchant in fact shared a stand-up bill in four-hander Rubbernecker, with Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr and Robin Ince at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Merchant, along with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, have clocked up a staggering 280,000,000 downloads of their comedy podcast.  Their conversations have subsequently been animated for HBO cartoon series The Ricky Gervais Show. The second series is currently airing on HBO.

Merchant's latest show, An Idiot Abroad, is a live-action travelogue series starring Karl Pilkington.  Merchant's film credits include: Tooth Fairy with Dwayne Johnson and cameos in Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run alongside Simon Pegg.  He directed his first feature film Cemetery Junction with Gervais, which was released in 2010 and he also appeared in Hall Pass with Owen Wilson.

Stephen Merchant said: ‘Most people don't realize that I was a stand-up comedian before I met Ricky Gervais and his coat-tails. Life can be lonely as a TV writer so this tour is a great opportunity for me to get out there and meet my fans.  And make at least one of them my wife.'

Stephen Merchant, I see myself in your future!

by Patsy1982 on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

Whoah my god, was this show good or what? I know now that Stephen Merchant and I are destined to have babies together. They will be freakishly tall and so near-sighted on account of both their parents' eyesight that they will be prohibited from driving at night. No matter! The show was awesome. Excellent use of power point and microphone with a camera inside the head technology. Definitely not soz I saw it!

    Sexiest man alive

by Cass0223 on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

I don't know why Smerch has to go out on tour to find a wife. His brains and humor, coupled with his height and ability to make fun of himself make him the sexiest man alive! I go to sleep every night listening to his various podcasts and audio books, but seeing him in person was sooooooo much funnier. I have never laughed so hard in my life and it was amazing to see that he managed to sell out in America.

    Fantastic night!

by notafilmnoirheroine on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

What a brilliant night. Mr. Merchant was superb: funny, engaging, and (as an added bonus) on-time! Even his opening act was worth seeing. The venue was fantastic; not only was it beautiful and clean inside, but the sound quality ensured that things were easily understood. The usher my friend and I talked to when we needed help finding our seats was extremely helpful, and was very nice in light of our situation.

    Off of my seat laughing!

by Tashpop on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

Stephen Merchant is a riot and doubly so in his live performance! He does not disappoint in his stand up or his dancing and I recommend seeing this a hundred percent! (And due to his height, there is no such thing as a bad seat or nosebleed section.)

by Operagal465 on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

We had no idea what to expect from Stephen Merchant in concert without his regular partner in comedy but we were BLOWN AWAY!!!! He absolutely is a comedic genius in his own right. It was a night absolutely packed with uproarious laughter. Run, don't walk to see him live!

    Merchant refuses to disappoint

by Lee02465 on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

Going in to this show I knew Stephen from his television work. Although funny, I was unsure as to how he would fare with stand up. There was no need to worry however as opener Hannibal Burress started things off with big comedy which only led to Stephen's enormous comedy. Between his observations, dancing, and pulling people from the audience, it was literally non-stop laughs. If he were staying in New York I would definitely recommend his show to others.

Stephen Merchant - geeks are people, too

by CaroMC on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

Sat with my teenage son and friend and we all cried laughting. Self deprecating and hilarious - especially scenes demonstrating difficulties of intimacy and using a mic stand as a prop. Still can't stop laughing - he was also incredibly funny about mortifying scenes from childhood - like the letter he received from the BBC when he corrected them about the Bond movies.Very good at managing the audience. We left asking ourselves why he didn't do more of this.
