About

The Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe award winning co-creator of The Office and Extras (both for BBC) is embarking on his first ever stand-up comedy tour STEPHEN MERCHANT LIVE: HELLO LADIES...

Globally known for his acclaimed collaborative work with partner Ricky Gervais, Merchant has at last decided to take his considerable stand-up talents on the road.  It's not widely known he started his career as a stand-up comedian and radio presenter - at XFM where he met Gervais.  In 2001, Merchant in fact shared a stand-up bill in four-hander Rubbernecker, with Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr and Robin Ince at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Merchant, along with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, have clocked up a staggering 280,000,000 downloads of their comedy podcast.  Their conversations have subsequently been animated for HBO cartoon series The Ricky Gervais Show. The second series is currently airing on HBO.

Merchant's latest show, An Idiot Abroad, is a live-action travelogue series starring Karl Pilkington.  Merchant's film credits include: Tooth Fairy with Dwayne Johnson and cameos in Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run alongside Simon Pegg.  He directed his first feature film Cemetery Junction with Gervais, which was released in 2010 and he also appeared in Hall Pass with Owen Wilson.

Stephen Merchant said: ‘Most people don't realize that I was a stand-up comedian before I met Ricky Gervais and his coat-tails. Life can be lonely as a TV writer so this tour is a great opportunity for me to get out there and meet my fans.  And make at least one of them my wife.'

Steve Merchant: Hello Ladies stand up tour

by Andrew23 on 12/24/11Town Hall - New York

Steve Merchant, co-creator of The Office and Extras, was a delight to see live. His jokes kept you on your toes because you weren't sure what was going to come next. They all had the same result though: gut hurting laughs. My only grip was that it ended too soon; I wanted more!

Better than expected. Great interaction and humor that transferred from British comedy to American understanding.

Steve was great. All his jokes and anecdotes were amusing and funny. A lot of physical comedy and audience participation as well. Definitely would see again.

    First Time

by Rhonda45 on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

Took my 2 sons to see him, it was their first trip to New York and first Comedy show. I laughed so much I left the theater feeling awesome. Laughter really is the best medicine and a great pick-me-up. We all loved the show and hope he comes back soon and performs in more towns.

SM is a naturally funny comdedian

by Nerdbird on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

SM is naturally funny and assumes his audience is intelligent to pick up double meanings and previous comments. My main criticism is the warm up comic who came on before Stephen Merchant. There are many comics of his sort who must rely on bathroom humor and vulgarity to get a nervous laugh from the audience. He had a few funny remarks but mostly it was filth. Fortunately 90% of the evening of was SM and he was a delight.

One of the most unique comedians

by myok12 on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

For those familiar with Stephen, no explanation is needed. But for the rest, he's just brilliant. He doesn't pick on the audience but instead on himself. His weird height, his geekiness, and his success with women, or rather his failure. Witty and funny!

    Stephen Merchant Held His Own

by Gionn on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

He mentioned Ricky once and not by name. He simply said "You know who". He really held his own throughout. It was brilliant. I laughed my ass off. It was better than I expected, many times over.

    Stephen Merchant definitely worth seeing!

by Aerlian on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

Stephen is a very funny man and I could sense the shared comedy that he has developed with Ricky Gervais. Both men are very funny but clearly they can operate on their own We were sitting at the very back of the orchestra pit right by the exit. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban took seats about 10 feet away so that was interesting.

    Merchant Delivered

by mrsfredmfranklinjr on 12/23/11Town Hall - New York

He's just so likeable. His comedy isn't predictable or shocking it's just funny. It's more like the consistant laughs you have when sitting with friends. He gets what his audience thinks is funny and he delivers.

Stephen Merchant did not disappoint! If you're a fan of his work with Ricky Gervais, you will enjoy this stand-up show. Merchant proves that he is one funny guy who can make it on his own if he wants to (even if he has trouble attracting the right lady). He did a great job with his material and improving with the audience.

    Stephen Merchant is a major-league stand-up

by Malcolm88 on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

This is simply the best stand-up comedy performance I've ever attended. He has a previously-hidden talent for stand-up. I would go to see him again without hesitation.

    amazing

by sarahtherobot on 12/22/11Town Hall - New York

Stephen Merchant was a dream. He came out looking fantastic, as usual, and then proceeded to rock the house. Great jokes, as a fan I had heard some of the material before (on the internet and such) but nonetheless i found each joke even funnier live. All around hilarious. I'd like to add also that, because he is such a stand up dude, he came outside after the show and happily signed things and took pictures with fans. Super nice and hilarious. It was awesome. I repeat, AWESOME.
