About

The Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe award winning co-creator of The Office and Extras (both for BBC) is embarking on his first ever stand-up comedy tour STEPHEN MERCHANT LIVE: HELLO LADIES...

Globally known for his acclaimed collaborative work with partner Ricky Gervais, Merchant has at last decided to take his considerable stand-up talents on the road.  It's not widely known he started his career as a stand-up comedian and radio presenter - at XFM where he met Gervais.  In 2001, Merchant in fact shared a stand-up bill in four-hander Rubbernecker, with Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr and Robin Ince at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Merchant, along with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, have clocked up a staggering 280,000,000 downloads of their comedy podcast.  Their conversations have subsequently been animated for HBO cartoon series The Ricky Gervais Show. The second series is currently airing on HBO.

Merchant's latest show, An Idiot Abroad, is a live-action travelogue series starring Karl Pilkington.  Merchant's film credits include: Tooth Fairy with Dwayne Johnson and cameos in Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run alongside Simon Pegg.  He directed his first feature film Cemetery Junction with Gervais, which was released in 2010 and he also appeared in Hall Pass with Owen Wilson.

Stephen Merchant said: ‘Most people don't realize that I was a stand-up comedian before I met Ricky Gervais and his coat-tails. Life can be lonely as a TV writer so this tour is a great opportunity for me to get out there and meet my fans.  And make at least one of them my wife.'

    the Merchant of funny

by orbus on 1/10/12Town Hall - New York

I've been a huge fan and though he is hilarious since the original podcasts with him and Gervais, and this show did nothing to disprove that. I'd go see him every time he comes around. Hopefully he does more. Great stuff.

Witty, hilarious, so-not-gervais and I still loved him just as much. Cute and just the right amount of offensive jokes.

    Nice Theater, talented man.

Very funny, and quite long for a one man show. Some pieces were brilliant, particularly him making "faces" in the camera of his microphone. Town Hall is a great venue. Not too big, great location.

Merchant sells laughs, laughs and more laughs

by thesegoto11 on 12/28/11Town Hall - New York

I'm a HUGE fan of Ricky Gervais. He has created some of the funniest moments in the history of television. The Office and Extras are hands-down, two of the most brilliant sitcoms in the last 10 years. Ricky, although he has dominated the spotlight, stands next to his co-creator Stephen Merchant. And although it's been Ricky that has sold millions of tickets and DVDs to his stand-up shows and specials, the opportunity to see Merch deliver on his own was one I couldn't resist. I AM SO GLAD I WENT. I'm just about over the edge on the notion that Merch MAY BE funnier than Ricky. His material, his delivery, his physicality, his originality ... there is something very unique about Stephen's stand-up and you'd be selling yourself by not visiting the Merchant.

pretty cute. the many jokes about mr merchant's physical stature wore a little thin (i just can't relate) and the theme (trying to woo ladies) was not entirely cohesive, but there were a lot of good laughs. hint hint, many of the routines are on you-tube from various shows in the tour (they were not there a few months ago when i was purchasing tickets so any stand up you see is going to be recent).

    Stephen Merchant Hello Ladies

by Ron1960 on 12/26/11Town Hall - New York

This was a hilarious show! I was not sure how good it would be since British Humor can be an acquired taste but everyone in my group thought Stephen Merchant was very, very funny. Well worth the money.

I had a massive amount of fun seeing Stephen Merchant's stand-up in New York City, made even better by my perfect view from the front of the loge in the Town Hall Theater. It was very much a visually-oriented show, split between the images projected at the back of the stage that formed the basis for several of the jokes and the physical comedy that ran throughout the show. I found myself laughing so hard that I was moving around in my seat. While it was obvious that Merchant had altered his act somewhat to use American terms and expressions, that didn't detract from his humor, unique perspective and absolute willingness to laugh at himself. His tour may be ending next month, but I urge everyone to buy the DVD (with British wording intact) so that more people can laugh with this hilariously wonderful comedian.
