STEELY DAN IN CONCERT:

Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most complex, finely crafted classic rock of the 20th century, and they continue to deliver on tour more than 40 years after their debut. Core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are legendary for their musicianship, and they only surround themselves with the finest players, making for studio-perfect live renditions of their virtuosic compositions. Whether fans are out to wax nostalgic with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or sway in the breeze of "Hey Nineteen," Steely Dan never fails to deliver amaze, with another hit-filled tour planed for summer 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen met in the late '60s at Bard College in Upstate New York, writing songs together for several years before officially forming Steely Dan and releasing their first single "Dallas" in 1972. While the single sold poorly, their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill was released later that year to considerable critical and commercial success, landing the band their first hits with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years." They continued to climb the charts throughout the decade, reaching their peak position in 1977 with Aja, a No. 3 hit widely regarded as a seminal album of the classic rock era. Amid rumors of a return to the studio, the band will hit the road in 2014 for an extensive summer tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Steely Dan has been around so long they can play an entire concert of familiar songs and not run out. I personally like a band that can recreate the studio sound on stage well. SD does this better than anyone else."

” I cannot think of a time that I was ever disappointed by a Steely Dan show, and this concert was no different. From the minute they took the stage right on up until they left it (almost two hours later) we were presented with excellent music performed to perfection with some stories thrown in for good measure."

"Always a MUST SEE when Steely Dan comes to town! Each song was performed superbly by top-notch musicians. Every member of the band was featured. It was hit after hit, classic after classic."

Steely Dan was the Real Thing

by OldDude on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steely Dan was very good. The thirteen piece ensemble was tight and well-rehearsed. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker moved comfortably through about 20 cuts. They wasted little time going from one tune to the next. The backup singers were polished and moved through the tunes like clockwork. I would have given them 5 stars except they did not play two of my favorites: Rikki Don't Lose That Number and Do It Again. The old stuff is much better than the new stuff. Still, the concert was exceptional.

by BethA on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steely Dan was just as great as they've always been. They played all of my favorite songs as well as some new songs. The band and back-up singers were fantastic! There wasn't a bad seat in the house and the accoustics were super! The entire staff at the DPAC were very helpful, professional and friendly. It was a very enjoyable concert!

Good, solid performance with all the favorites

by brandyru on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

My husband is the real fan of Steely Dan but I have started recently to listen to their music. They did a great job of mixing the fan favorites with a few of their lesser known hits. It was non-stop music and a really good show.

Steely Dan once again was great

by BobFl on 7/14/09Ruth Eckerd Hall - Clearwater

It was a great performance, my only slight criticism would be that the song selection was basically the same from the 2006 show, with only a few slight differences. Otherwise a great show, however, the warm up act was terrible.

The Dan never fails! Great show! Songs hold up even 30+ years later. I hope they still need rent in 2010. I'll be there!

    Was right on the mark

by carymusiclover on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The show was amazing. I am always a little concerned with acts of my day that the vocals and the focus of the music will be diminished. Fagen's voice was right where there. Background girls gave me freaking chills as to how on the mark they were. Band was also was right there. All this in conjunction with the great space of the DPAC just made for a great night. Not to mention the availibilty of the "scotch neat" ie: Drink scotch whiskey all night long".

    Superb musicianship

by YosemiteSam on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The band gets better and tighter each time I see them play (4 times since 2006). The musicians are of the highest quality and all of them just love to play Steely Dan's wonderful music. The music is alive in that the tempo, sound and melodies are all there, but the soloes are not note for note, rather they are played from the same musical idea. Fagan and Becker are very generous to the other musicians. It is rare that you get your money's worth but this is worth every penny.

Steely Dan remains at the top of their performance

by Creson on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steely Dan have always been known for their consummate studio sessions and albums. Since their return from a long 17 year hiatus from touring in 1993, they have consistently produced top-notch live performances several of which I have had the good fortune to attend. The premier concert at DPAC in Durham on June 9, 2009 was no exception. The fact that Durham was chosen to be the lead-off venue for their recent tour made the event even more poignant. The sheer workmanship of Fagen and Becker to develop this unique blend of music and keep it alive through the good and the bad years is testament to the greatness of these musicians. The concert in Durham certainly reflected the professionalism that this band possesses. Thank you for another great show in my new home city

Best live show of the year

by ReidSpencer on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This was our fifth Dan show in the past 12 months and the first of the new Rent Party '09 Tour. Musicianship, as usual, was unparalleled. Always a treat to heaqr Michael Leonhart on trumpet, Walt Weiskopf on tenor, the incomparable Keith Carlock on drums and Jon Herrington on guitar. Opening number, a modern version of "Reelin' in the Years," reworked to fit the band's current groove, blew us away. Also loved a couple of the more obscure tunes from Gaucho: "Time Out of Mind" and "My Rival." The band is in Europe right now but returns to the States in late July. If you have a chance to see them, do it!

    Reelin' in the fans

by agentschroeder on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Steely Dan was great. They played for a solid 2 hours and I would have stayed there for another 2 if they had kept playing. I would definitely recommend going to see them, especially at a venue like DPAC.

    Steely Dan at the DPac

by kentyn on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Great show at a great venue. One of the best things about a show at the DPac is the noise level. The plays or musicians are loud enough but not making my ears bleed. The Dan was this way. Very tight and pro musicians made for a wonderful show. Opening with a new rendition of Reelin in the Years was surprising but welcome. They did a great set but left you wanting more because of the plethora of hits they've had. Something had to be left out. As for the venue, good site lines throughout unless you were behind the people that think they have to stand and dance and sing to each song. Either we all need to stand or it would be nice if the ushers were there to lend a hand when you can't see because Bobby wants to get up and dance by himself. Overall, great show and great show palace.

    Awesome!

by Michael76 on 7/14/09Ruth Eckerd Hall - Clearwater

My wife and I both truly enjoyed the Steely Dan concert! Although they did not play ALL of their hits (i.e. FM, Do it Again, Deacon Blues) the songs they did play sounded as though we were back in the 70's and 80's again. These guys can STILL bring it!

    Steely Dan was great

by donnaleebe on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I got the tickets for my boyfriend as a birthday present. He's a big fan. We were not disappointed. Steely Dan was great. There may have been one or two minor missteps as Durham was the opening show, but all and all a good time was had by all. And DPAC has become our favorite venue in the Triangle. Not only does it still have the "new" shine everywhere but every person working there is has a smile (including those on have talked on the phone) and seem happy to help you.

    Steely Dan was terrific!

by TerriL on 7/14/09DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Loved the show overall.. the only issue that I had was that they did not play Deacon Blues. I understand they have so many to select from, but this is the most famous, in my opinion.
