Over three decades and numerous albums, industrial metal scene leaders Static-X are consummate survivors. Even after the untimely death of lead singer Wayne Static in 2014, the group has regenerated and continued to record new music while honoring the late frontman's legacy. Unlike their more straightforward '90s nu-metal counterparts, Static-X were heavily influenced by house music, blending influences like Pantera with the electronic stylings of Prodigy and the Crystal Method to define their sound.
Static-X were originally formed in 1994 after Wayne Static's former band, Deep Blue Dream (featuring a pre-Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan), broke up. Along with drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Emerson Swinford, Static relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles and the trio formed a band called DRILL. Swinford left the band and was replaced by Koichi Fukuda, and Static-X was born.
The band's first album came out in 1999 at the height of the nu-metal era. Wisconsin Death Trip contained the singles "Push It," "I'm With Stupid" and "Bled For Days." They played Ozzfest to support the album and released an EP, The Death Trip Continues, the following year.
Fukuda departed Static-X soon after, and in 2001 the band released their sophomore effort: Machine. The following year, Wayne Static's vocals were featured on the Queen Of The Damned: Music From the Motion Picture soundtrack ("Not Meant For Me," written by Korn's Jonathan Davis). Jay left the band shortly after, and in 2003 Static-X's third album, Shadow Zone, was released, featuring "The Only" and "So" as singles. Replacing Jay was former Seether drummer Nick Oshiro.
In 2004, Static-X released Beneath... Between... Beyond..., a collection of rarities and demos. The band released their fourth album, Start A War, in 2005 with "I'm the One" and "Dirthouse" released as singles. In 2007, Static-X shared a fifth album, Cannibal, which had music ("No Submission") featured on the Saw III soundtrack. Also in 2007, the band shared their exclusive Destroyer EP and toured on Ozzfest once more.
In 2009, the band released their fifth album, Cult Of Static. The album single "Lunatic" appeared on the soundtrack to Marvel's Punisher: War Zone. Oshiro left Static-X around this time and was replaced by touring drummer Will Hunt. Â
By the 2010s, the members of Static-X had split off to concentrate on separate projects, and Static toured with a solo band under the Static-X name. In 2013, the band announced that they were officially breaking up, though Static continued to play the band's material on tour as a solo act. In 2014, Static died at 48 ostensibly due to a long history of substance abuse, though officially his death was termed a natural one.Â
A few years after Static's death, the former band members reunited and began to parse through old unreleased demos. Composing new songs from that material resulted in Project Regeneration, which came out in two volumes, the first of which dropped in summer 2020. To support the album, the newly reformed Static-X toured with a new, masked frontman named "Xer0," who was rumored to be Edsel Dope of Dope. The band also released a single, "Hollow," which peaked in the Top 15 in the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart.
Catch Static-X on tour in a city near you.
Great show and nice cozy venue. Not really a bad seat in the place.
Static-X and Fear Factory were both absolutely incredible! The tribute to Wayne at the end of the show was really special. The sound quality was great, the stage setup looked fantastic. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I don't believe The Roxian was the right venue for this show. The pit area is too small, the stairs to get into it are always blocked. Plus the drinks were way too expensive. It should have been at Mr Smalls or Stage AE.
This was a great show start to finish at a super nice venue in Pittsburgh. It was awesome to see the full lineup stay after being rescheduled twice. If you can see this tour do so and if its too loud then you aren't prepared for Fear Factory.
sold out show was an amazing performance đ so glad i got to go and hear my fav hits!
The entire lineup was amazing and the mix of songs from band catalog was great. The venue is also great, my favorite small venue in Pittsburgh
It was a great venue! Clean, up to date, staff, friendly and courteous.
Static X put on an amazing show! I remember looking out at the crowd and seeing everyone one grooving out. Static X is a magical blend of house/ electronic dance music and metal! đ¤
The band is always good every time we see them. We did the meet and greet this time. They were all super friendly and autographed several things for us. Canât wait to see them again!
Well worth the money. One of the best shows I have attended post Covid. The bands look like they are really enjoying the tour and it translates into the performance. I wish more bands would have theater/small venues shows. Us 40-50 something crowd can afford it and it's a much better experience.
First time at house of blues. Great first impression, looking forward to coming back down the road!
Static-x was amazing, set list was great, sounded amazing. Iâve been here multiple times for concerts and it never fails that at least one band will have audio issues. This time it was dope whose volume seemed to be lower than the rest. Not sure if this is a venue issue or a sound guy issue. I was last there for Lorna shore and every band that played before them sounded amazing except Lorna. Again, the volume was so low that I could talk to the guy beside me without having to scream or constantly say âhuh?â. Personally I feel like I shouldnât be able to hear the guy next to me without screaming to them. Prices have gone up for merch and booze since last year but prices are up everywhere so whatever.
I had tickets to see Wayne in 2014 just 11 days after his passing so my daughter & I never got to see him live. This was a fitting tribute to his legacy & I would absolutely attend another Static X show in the future. Excellent work!!
The venue was a little small. The house sound tech did no justice for Cultus Black or Twiztid, whom replaced Mushroomhead. Lead guitar was overbearing with reverb and feedback in the gain. The vocal mic was turned down drowning out the singers. The sound tech for Static X, Cowboy Krueger as we referred to him, was amazing and balanced out the sound as Dope came on. The comeback of Fear Factory was amazing. Static X was as always bigger than life. Zero was a big hit. He's no Wayne Static, but Zero is by far the perfect fit for Static and perfect for the new era of the Machines. I can't wait to see what comes of them from here. Hopefully an unmasking after this tour. I do have bring up Cultus Black. This was an amazing new band with a variety in their vocals. Was great to hear these guys, but I do have to say, House of Blues Cleveland Ohio is TOO small of a venue for these guys. They are reaching for those bigger stages. they definitely wore their big girl panties to open for the acts to follow, which is never an easy task when you got Fear Factory on line up. Twiztid was good. Definitely a far stretch from what they have done with psychopathic records. Now a live band and more metal incorporated. Dope was dope. What more is there to say with these guys. They give you the top you expect, and never anything less. Fear Factory back in action may be an act of the metal Godz fearing the fall of mankind and rebirthing us a hope. These boys are icons and legends for a reason. Need I say more. Can't say it was a comeback, didn't seem like they ever left just a short hiatus or vacation.
Great show. Had balcony seats that had a great view and sounded awesome.
The bands were great. Static X, Fear Factory, and Dope were excellent. My gripe is the fact that it was at House of Blues and the venue was too small. This should have been at the Agora which is more than double the size and has better viewing options.
All bands were fantastic, energetic, and engaged. Favorite was Mushroomhead and Atatic-X, but Cultus, Dope and especially Fear Factory were amazing
Love the venue! The smaller ones are the best IMO as it gives you a more personal experience. Drinks were fairly priced, great staff, clean restrooms and great acoustics! Static X, Fear Factory, Mushroomhead and Dope were phenomenal as always! Cultus Black was a new one for me and the rocked also!
It was great! An amazing band at a great venue. It was easy to access snd safe to navigate.
Absolutely amazing show I was in the front row. Truly epic.
I had never seen a show of this scale before, and in such a great place. I've never been to Canada and this experience made me want to automatically return for when Skinny Puppy come in April, which I plan on doing. Parking was a breeze, getting in was a breeze, everything from the beginning of Dope to the end of Static-X was phenomenal. I loved this show and can't wait to see these bands tour again, as a unit or on their own.
