About

Squeeze, led by the songwriting duo of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, produced some of the catchiest songs from the ‘70s British new wave scene. The band’s 1978 self-titled debut and follow-up albums Cool for Cats (1979) and Argybargy (1980) produced a number of hits in the U.K., with a few receiving airplay on U.S. college radio, including “Take Me I'm Yours,” “Up the Junction” and the bouncy “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell).” In 1981, Squeeze released their fourth studio album East Side Story, featuring “Tempted.” The song went on to become one of the band’s most famous songs. It has been featured in movies, TV shows, video games and commercials.

    horrible sound both bands

by monticalmn on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

I dont know who was at the mixing board last night but they should be fired. What I thought would be a night of great music from 2 fantastic bands turned out to be so horrible I left before the squeeze show ended. I thought cheap trick would just pour out its hits through the decades and they did to a degree. Ofter they played obscure songs that sounded as if they wanted to show that they could play modern heavy metal music. They cant, the roaring drums and the screeching vocals ruined the sound, It was horrible waiting for poor song after poor song to end. The mixer must enjoy the bass because of all the instruments thats the one heard most prominently. Squeeze came out at 945, the bass was so loud it drouned out the guitar and alot of the vocal. After an hour of boom boom boom i walked out. I will never see these bands again and would avoid rock shows at radio city. I saw ringo there last week and the sound was fantastic but lastnight the mixer was out of it

    Squeeze at Radio City

by CoolForCatsRob on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

A great, great show. The boys were in fine form, their voices strong, the band incredibly tight and light on its feet. The tunes crisp. So many great songs - they were a real songwriting phenom. Audience was on its feet almost the entire show. An awesome, awesome night of 80's classic power-pop, new wave, brit-pop muzak!

    Squeeze

by coops1 on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

I have been a fan of Squeeze forever, and I always wanted to see them in concert. I was not dissapointed. They are great. HOWEVER_ whoever put Cheap Trick as the opening act has to have his head examined. They couldnt be more different in musical styles. They were very loud and played way too long.

    squeeze me

by bogishy on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

totally random pairing, though i am a fan of both bands. squeeze was awesome but cheap trick was not so great. their few older songs they played were great but a lot of bad new songs that just sounded like a lotta noise. Both bands have held up well for their age however. I recommend earplugs.

    Squeeze delivers

by M2HHK on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Squeeze played a terrific show and their fans appreciated it. Played most of their fan favorites (hardcore fans always want more) and a half dozen new songs. Lots of energy and the band is still tight after all these years. Would have preferred they play longer and eliminate the dual billing with Cheap Trick, but no one asked me. Cheap Trick was awful. Could not wait for them to leave the stage. Older crowd was polite to a fault and did not boo them off. Lead guitar Rick Nielsen seemed more obsessed with throwing guitar picks to the crowd than playing a good show. In their defense, their sound system was terrible and Squeeze had a completely different set up and was much cleaner.

    Reunited with music I loved

by Danaisle on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

This is a co-headlining tour, so the opening act can vary, but I was glad Cheap Trick came out first (and early! they started at 7:58pm). Rick Nielsen's wall of sound was not well-suited to Radio City Music Hall; it was too loud and the sound was terribly distorted. The musicianship was excellent, though, and they played their hits with enthusiasm. Robin Zander's vocals were impressive, Tom Peterson locked in well with Dax Nielsen's drumming and Rick Nielsen's delight in performing was evident as he threw guitar picks into the audience. Squeeze was amazing. I had seen them for the first time at the Bottom Line 30 years ago and was a rabid fan through the Difford/Tilbrook solo projects. The sound levels were much more appropriate to the venue and allowed one to appreciate the arrangements and quality of the performances. They played much more than just their hits, including a song from their solo record that I had forgotten about and truly love ("Hope Fell Down"). Glenn Tilbrook hasn't lost a step; his guitar leads were thrilling and that voice is still delicious. We left giddily singing the chorus from "Hour Glass."

    Great combo concert

by BritishGuy on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Cheap Trick opened and were quite solid. Never been a big Cheap Trick fan--went for Squeeze--but I enjoyed them well enough. Squeeze were excellent and got stronger as the performance went on. However, as with the Deep Purple concert that I went to at Radio City Music Hall, the reverb on the bass was too high and detracted from the quality of the performance at times.

Cheap Trick Needs to Play to their Audience

by nottellingyou77 on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

First off, I didn't stay for Squeeze so I have no idea how they were. As for Cheap Trick, for a true fan, they put on a great show. However, more than half the audience was there for Squeeze and wanted to see a greatest hits/ Budokan type setlist. The first three songs, only half the seats were filled - Until they played IWYTWM, then everyone came in - Only to sit in their seats for the next few songs while they lost most of the audience with new songs that even die hard fans don't know and extended jams. Cries of Surrender and Dream Police were coming from the crowd much like Freebird. These people wanted to hear what they knew and many of the Greatest Hits were left out. This was the kind of set list they *should* have played at Irving Plaza or the Beacon when they were HEADLINING. Now, I realize this is technically a "co-headline" bill - BUT, when you go on FIRST, regardless of the billing, you have to know most people are NOT there to see you. My objective opinion is that Cheap Trick needs to get in touch with audience they play to. This has always been a problem for them, most likely due to poor direction from management. Also, the production itself needs a lift - Can anyone say BACKDROP? The sea of black above them could have used something even if it were just a just projection. So, on one hand they play a headling set list to a crowd that it was wasted on. And, on the other hand they put no effort to give the band the appearance of being the headliner: Very disjointed and bizarre. For this audience, the crowd would have been happy to hear the entire Budokan set along with the familiar logo behind the band. Cheap Trick clearly missed the boat.

    Cheap Trick and Squeeze

by nycwhofan on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Unbelievably great double bill. Cheap Trick is a national treasure. The set list was everything you could ask for. A little old, a little new, great Beatles cover and the Surrender/Dream Police one-two punch. Robin Zander's voice is a thing of beauty. He sounds just as awesome today as he did 30 years ago. Missed Bun E. though. Squeeze was just as fun, if not more so. Difford & Tilbrook are among my most favorite songwriters of all time - up there with Lennon/McCartney, Davies, Townshend, Partridge and Jagger/Richards. The band sounded great and ran through hits with a couple of not as familiar tunes as well. Wish all shows gave as much bang for the buck.

The sound at Radio City STINKS

by Timbo2 on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

had good seats - but the sound was thin & too bass heavy - vocals weren't loud enough. Just not a good room to hear rock music.

Cheap Trick and Squeeze Rock NYC!

by lifinhead on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Squeeze, while ostensibly the closing act, were really just the cherry on a LARGE sundae that was served up by the opening act, Cheap Trick. The sold-out Radio City Music Hall was, basically, a battleground of 70's hard-rock devotees of Cheap Trick and 80's club-going followers of Squeeze, with a slight edge to the Squeeze backers. But, in truth, Cheap Trick took the ball, ran with it, and never relinquished their lead! Rather than merely play a "greatest hits" set, which is EXACTLY what Squeeze did, they showed the guts and the "cojones" to play a set that represented a FULL repertoire of their 35+ year recording history. This may have disappointed some fans, BUT it was incredibly fulfilling for TRUE Cheap Trick fans, such as myself. Rick Nielsen, one of the most under-rated "guitar gods" ever, ripped a hole in the stage at RCMH - the three other band members played their butts off as well, but Rick was, without a doubt, on top of his stellar game, displaying for all too see a wizardry of guitar playing not seen too often, even in NYC. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame needs to wake up and induct Cheap Trick. The re-worked quintet that is the current rendition of Squeeze played a set of their classic hits that was tight and thoroughly pleased their fans in the audience. All in all, a terrific show worth every single significant penny spent on it!

    Squeeze was terrific

by DDAY9 on 7/14/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

If you like Squeeze, you will love this show! They sounded great and did all the songs you would want to hear. They started with Black coffee in Bed and ended with Pulling Mussels from a Shell. I took my wife but it reminded me of all the fun times I had before getting married, after college. Don't tell her. Cheap trick opened and they were BAD. I hope you live on the West Coast so that you can see General Public If you live on the east coast, show up late.

    Tight Jam Packed Entertaining show!

by Glennfan on 7/12/10House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

I would definitely recommend this show to anyone! Cheap Trick and Squeeze both put on excellent shows. Both great artists, although quite different, bring back great memories for those that were fans in the 70's and 80's. They both still have it after all these years and in my eyes, most current bands just do not hold a candle to the talent and musicianship of some of these older bands. I'm very glad I got to attend!
