I throught the concert was great, just wish it was a little longer.
The Spyro Gyra show was amazing. It was one of the best shows i hav e attended in some time.really powerful concert. Loved it.
This was a great concert. They started right at the advertised time. After the 2nd tune, Jay introduced the band members. I liked that he spoke a little about each tune, when they recorded it, which of the guys composed it, etc. These guys are individually very accomplished musicians. Each displayed their skill at some point(s) during the set. Scott, the bassist, came to front stage to play right along with Jay, Julio or do his solo licks. The drummer is awesome. During his solo, the other guys left the stage for about 10 minutes.
Spyrogyra was one of the first post-funk (real funk) jazz-rock fusion bands of the late '70s. They pushed the envelope and broke at the time. They virtyually helped lay the foundation for all the jazz-rock/smooth rock being produced and released today. And they still have it. The majority of the musicians in the band today are the same ones that were there decades ago. They're all phenomenal musicians and performers. They are a treat to watch and listen to. A real opportunity that shouldn't be missed. 27 albums, and their material never gets old. That is the mark of a standard. My hat is off to the composers, particularly Beckenstein, and arrangers in the group. (They all write.) My hat is off to them. Harrah's needs to promote their name acts a little more aggressively to get the word out.
My husband, who used to play with a Jazz band, has been a fan since he was in high school. I hadn't really heard much of them. We both truly enjoyed their performance.
Spyro Gyra was incredible...I would luv 2 c them a million times more!!!!!
It was tooooooo short. It was good to see them. A lot of my friends thought they were dead. I have told storied that I thought Spyro Gyra was on person. It was still toooooo shoooooortttttt.
It was a Awesome show a concert that was full on energy
Jay Beckenstein and Spyro Gyra still got it goin on after all this time. But Euge Groove is a force to be reckoned with. His amazing stage performance was a big hit with the audience.
All the performances were simply outstanding. When Spyro Gyra performed, I had to ask my fiance to pinch me so I'd know I wasn't dreaming . . . . they were just that smooth.
Can I get an 'Amen? What a fantastic show! It started off with Charlton SIngleton; his band were fantastic. Enter Paul "Shilts" with his British wit and charm and the show picked up some humour and more great music. And just when you thought it could not get better, out came Euge Groove! What a smash he was! He knew how to play to the audience and got everyone out of there seats and engaged with his music and sexy innuendos. Spyro Gyra finnished the night off and while they are a hugely talented group who I have enjoyed for many years, they did not engage the audience as much as the 3 preceeding acts. Even their stage was set further back and because Jay Beckenstein's sax was not connected to a mic he had to stay in one place. Guitarist Julio Fernandez was my favourite of the group. What I like best was that the proceeds of the show went to a medical scholarship fund for African American students attending MUSC in the name of Thaddeus J. Bell, MD. Dr. Bell started the Low Country Jazz Festival last year and I am already planning my trip south from NC for next year's LCJF
All the performances were fantastic! I am so glad I attended this show. It was great to see Spyro Gyra after all these years.
What an amazing night to have all these special people entertain us and for a fund raising event!!! Helping to raise money to help medical students....We loved every minute..We'll be looking forward to next year's event. It will be hard to top this one..
I thoroughly enjoyed the show and look forward to future jazz festivals.
Sypro Gyra is iconic - each member is incredibly talented. Enjoyed them very much! However, for me, Euge Groove stole the entire evening from the other performers - talented, energetic, funny, unbelieveable connection with the audience. I would pay to see him over and over. Please continue to have the festival each year, bringing in great performers like this you did this year!
we had a wonderful time saturday night and all the bands were terrific with great sound and upbeat tempo's.the only down side is they went long and people started leaving in the middle of the main acts performance which was distracting and sad.otherwise its on for next year.
Here's hoping the Bells can keep bringing great jazz to the Lowcountry for the benefit of jazz lovers and African American students at MUSC. The 2nd Annual Festival was a strong follow up to last year's inaugural. I got there late due to a prior engagement and came in on Shilts' act. He was OK, but was a pale candle to the high-powered and show-stopping acts of Euge Groove and Spyrogyra. Biggest disappointments were the size of the audience and the MC yelling for us to give it up for, "Spyrogyro!"
Ranking the perfromers from best to worse, Euge Groove stole the show. He and his band were tremendous. Wonderful entertainment. If it was only Euge for the evening , his group's performance would have made the show. Charleton Singleton and his group did an excellent job. He should cut a CD. Chilts teaming with Charleton and his band was the second best performance of the evening. Charleton and his band were superb with a very close third. The performance by Spyro Gyra was very disappointing. The group should have focused on their top songs. I did not enjoy 10 minute individual band member solo performances parsed through out the time the band was on stage. Their Mingus tune was completely out of sequence and a drastic mood downer for the audience. We went there to hear good, uplfiting smooth jaxzz. Spyro Gyra did not deliver.
Not sure what to expect, my son and spouse and I thoroughly enjoyed all three bands who were filled with high energy and fantastic music!!!!!
The local jazz band was very professional. They had a groove that blended right into the spirit of the 2nd Annual Low Counyrt Jazz Festival. Shiltz was phenominal, we all felt short-changed that he could not have presented more of his artistry. Spiro Gyra should have opened the evening. Their consistency and musical abilities showed why the have lasted all of these years. Their professionalism and selection of music rocked the Coliseum to it's very foundation. Eugene (Euge) Groove should have closed out the evening. His musical skills, his timing, his personality, his crowd interplay and his showmanship dazzled us all. Aagain, he should have ended the concert.I thought that the first Annal Low Country Jazz Festival was incredible, but this one stands on it's own. If any of my thoughts are considered valuable, please consider this: TURN OFF THE AIR CONDITOINING AFTER THE FIRST ACT. My wife and other womenaround us were freezing halfway through the Euge Groove's set. All in all, the venue is geautiful, there are no bad seats in the house and the accoustics were phenomenal. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
