About

Spring Awakening is a deaf accessible show that is signed in ASL simultaneously with speech. Deaf patrons seeking to understand through sign would best be served by a seat with a center view of the stage rather than a seat with close proximity to the stage.

Spring Awakening is the story of two star-crossed lovers: the brave and brilliant Melchior and a beautiful, young, deaf girl named Wendla. The musical follows this turn of the century Romeo and Juliet as they learn how to communicate, and how to love, in a world that’s trying to keep them apart.
EXTREMELY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT - NOW THROUGH JANUARY 24 ONLY!

"ONE OF THE GREAT MUSICALS OF THE LAST DECADE IS BORN ANEW."
–The New York Times

"A FIRST RATE PRODUCTION OF A TRANSPORTING MUSICAL."
–The New York Times

“BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL.”
–New York Magazine

"REVELATORY & MOVING. An original all its own"
–Newsday

“ELECTRIFYING & EXHILARATING. A Sheer Triumph!”
–AP

Deaf West’s production of SPRING AWAKENING floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, “It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's SPRING AWAKENING is so very, very good.” Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York. When it debuted on Broadway, SPRING AWAKENING’s raw and honest portrayal of youth in revolt shattered expectations of what a musical could do, earning it 8 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (for writer, Steven Sater) and Best Score (for composer, Duncan Sheik). Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden and starring Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Deaf West’s SPRING AWAKENING is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion, but it’s only on Broadway through January 24th.

    AMAZING!!

by CodaYoda on 1/17/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This was an amazing show put on by Deaf West theater!! Choreography with Deaf and hearing actors was VERY IMPRESSIVE. Albeit the use of sim-com did lead to some vagueness with understanding the signing and if you aren't sitting in the balcony seats then you will likely miss parts of the show. Other than that the Deaf actors/actresses were INCREDIBLE and the hearing actors signing while singing was an impressive feat. I would definitely recommend this show to everybody and see it while it's still on Broadway. MUST SEE SHOW SO AMAZING!!

    A truly breathtaking production

by Leemoon on 1/15/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Spring awakening has always been my favorite musical bar none. Seeing it in this light however transformed it, it was new and fresh and overall flawless. It is so powerful to see people with limited range on their senses (it's a difference from the imposed normality, not a disability) acting and performing on the same platform as everyone else. The play is so beautifully done, truly a masterpiece! The sign language inhanced the play and really gave it deeper meaning. It is really amazing and I cannot express that enough, a definite must see.

Go see this show before it's too late

by kylierems on 1/14/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Within these 2 and a half hours, you will laugh, you will cry, and you will be moved. This heartbreakingly beautiful musical is the future of Broadway. It features hearing and deaf actors as well as Broadway's first wheelchair actor. For many of the actors, it is their Broadway debut, and they are phenomenal. You can expect to see more from them in the future. Michael Arden's direction for this show is simply genius. Run to see Deaf West's production of Spring Awakening before January 24th. You won't regret it.

    Innovative revival

by Divadude on 1/14/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Talented young cast and several veteran performers are memorable in a passionate revival of the rock musical -- this time with American Sign Language as well as the spoken word.

    An Amazing production

by Peldari on 1/13/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I saw the original production of Spring Awakening and was blown away by it, so was thrilled with the idea of a revival. The hearing and deaf actors were seamlessly integrated and the signing was gorgeous - part of the choreography. It is a compelling story, beautifully told. A good reminder about the consequences of repression. I was thrilled to see so many young people in the audience - some with adults, others who were there on their own. They are the future of live theater!

One of the best plays I've ever seen (which is quite a few). The cast was incredible, the music was incredible, the set was great, the story was so emotional and moving. It was an unbelievable experience that I consider myself lucky to have seen

    Life Changing!

by RoxJZ on 1/13/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

The signing was beautiful, practically choreography. The set was fantastic. The music, superb -- I'll be listening to the soundtrack all week. The incorporation of D/deaf & hard of hearing accessibility really only made this play even better.

This was my 6th time seeing this show and it continues to take my breath away. It is so clever, detailed, and intricate. Every time I see it seems like the first time because I continue to find things in it I never noticed before. I literally can't say enough great things about this show. I will miss it so much once it's gone!

Interesting that play written in 1890s could still be timely today. Interesting the double characters speaking and signing. It was a bit busy and after ling day hard to focus on. Cast was good and enjoyed that first wheelchair actor finally hsppened

I honestly can't think of any stage performance that has been more *perfect* than this one. I'll never be able to watch this musical again without feeling as though something is missing. The more I think about it, the more I find to love. Please, if you have a chance to see this production, do it.

Spring Awakening A once in a lifetime experience

by ShelbyDor on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I've seen many, many Broadway shows and know I will never see anything like this reinvention of Spring Awakening. The way the staging was done to incorporate both speaking and signing parts was just incredible. The acting, singing and choreography just drew you into the action and emotion all through the show. Also, was never at a show where a standing ovation started even before the cast came out for their bows. Wish it was a longer run so more people could experience it!!

I couldn't decide whether to see this or not - I thought the signing during the show would be distracting. Boy was I wrong! Every performer was wonderful. The sign language was part of the choreography and added so much to the show. And the music was perfect. I highly recommend you see it before it's gone!!
