Small Town Murder Podcast on Tour
True crime is all the rage in the podcast world these days, thanks in no small part to offerings such as "Small Town Murder." The brainchild of two Phoenix-based comedians, James Pietragallo and Jimmie Whisman, "Small Town Murder" focuses on—as its name implies—murder cases that have gripped small towns.
Pietragallo and Whisman are no strangers to the podcast world. In 2016, the friends debuted "Crime in Sports," putting a humorous spin on professional athletes whose poor life decisions torpedoed their careers. Even before that, the duo grew up as true crime aficionados. Pietragallo told the Chicago Tribune that his mom "used to read me horrible true-crime books," and Whisman revealed that he was an avid "Dateline" viewer.
The format of "Small Town Murder" will be familiar to fans of the sister show. Each episode focuses on one murder case in a specific location, and it covers killings that might not have received a lot of mainstream press. But the show is about far more than just heinous crimes: Episodes include love triangles, sudden disappearances, and botched relationships, as well as bumbling criminals and the kind of quirky scenarios found only in out-of-the-way places.
So what makes "Small Town Murder" stand out from the true-crime-podcast pack? The impressive amount of research that goes into each episode, for starters. Plus, Pietragallo and Whisman possess an easy camaraderie that softens the tone of the serious subject matter, meaning the show has an expert balance of suspense, mystery, and lighthearted commentary. And perhaps even more important: While the men pepper their well-crafted storytelling with plenty of humor, they always state up front that there's absolutely no mockery of murder victims or their families allowed.
The "Small Town Murder" tour, Shut Up and Give Me Murder!, promises to preserve the spirit of the podcast while giving fans a chance to mix and mingle with other dedicated listeners.
James and Jimmie are the absolute bomb! I haven't had as much fun in a long time! Awesome show- nonstop laughs. Can't wait for them to come back soon! The venue was beautiful and staff were great!
The Wilbur is a great theater. James and Jimmie were excelent. Awesome show.
James and Jimmie never disappoint. I've been a regular listener since 2018 and this is the second time I've seen them at The Wilbur. They do a fantastic job crafting and telling a story that kept us laughing all night and on the drive home. The visuals add so much to the storytelling, if you like the podcast but you've never seen them live, do it! The Wilbur is a gorgeous theater but it's older, so folks who haven't been there before should be aware that there's not a lot of leg room in the seats (par for the course at an older venue). Luckily, we were in the last row of the balcony so I could stand up and lean against the wall when my knee started to hurt and I needed to stretch it out without disrupting anybody's enjoyment of the show. I bought the parking pass this time so we got to park close by with minimal trouble, that was a great add-on, well worth it. 10/10 would see them again at this or any other location.
Truly a fantastic show. These guys are humble, hilarious, grateful and amazing storytellers. Will be first in line for the next show!
This is the second time I’ve seen James and Jimmie live and they did not disappoint. Absolutely hilarious as always. If you’re into true crime and comedy, they’re a must see live. Now “SHUT UP AND GIVE ME MURDER!”
I came here with a group of friends to watch my favorite comedians. The venue was clean and easy to navigate. I enjoyed the show so much and the Fillmore accommodated it wonderfully. Thank you!
My boyfriend and I loved this. Very funny, will attend again.
Very entertaining, want to see another but in smaller city than Atlanta
I highly recommend all STM fans see James and Jimmie live at least once. It was so cool to see the humans who go with the voices I hear every week. I was hoping to buy merch at the show, but there was none out for purchase. If you want to wear a themed shirt, I say buy it online. But no matter what you wear, you’ll laugh heartily!
Love their podcast and the live show was even better! The venue was also amazing! Can't wait to see them or visit the Tabernacle again!
I listen to the podcast and always enjoy the show but seeing it live with pictures and the energy that comes with a room full of happy people is a million times better. I laughed until my stomach hurt. Seeing the guys live was a treat - they are both so cute and seeing facial expressions and body language was very cool. I can’t recommend the show enough. We want them back in ATL immediately!
The experience of listening to the podcast, but even better and more hyped.
The podcast is great but the live shows are even better! I'll never miss a live event in my town!
It was amazing. I knew it would be great, but honestly really surpassed my expectations. Worth every penny, and we will be going back any time they are in town!!! LOVED. IT.
I love STM and the boys really do pull a hell of a show live. The theatre it was held in was Pantages, MN. It looks very modest on the outside, but the interior is beautiful. The seats were very small and very close together, making touching strangers an unavoidable reality. The air flow wasn't great and it was very warm in the theatre. The acoustics were great, and the balcony seating made the stage perfectly visible. If you're easily claustrophobic I don't recommend this theatre. It is very difficult to leave and return to your seat during the show due to how close together the rows themselves are as well.
James and Jimmie are the best. That's it. That's the review.
Do yourself a favor and see a Small Town Murder live show if you have the opportunity. We absolutely love the podcast, but James and Jimmie somehow make the live show even better. The addition of visual materials is hysterical, the show is such a blast!
I laughed for 2 hours straight! What a combo of true talent!
This is my 4th time (3rd at The Pantages) seeing James and Jimmie live for Small Town Murder. They have an AMAZINGLY funny podcast and the live shows are even better!! As long as they're going do live shows, I'll be buying tickets!!
The boys always put on a fantastic show in Minneapolis.
