Small Town Murder Podcast on Tour

True crime is all the rage in the podcast world these days, thanks in no small part to offerings such as "Small Town Murder." The brainchild of two Phoenix-based comedians, James Pietragallo and Jimmie Whisman, "Small Town Murder" focuses on—as its name implies—murder cases that have gripped small towns.

Pietragallo and Whisman are no strangers to the podcast world. In 2016, the friends debuted "Crime in Sports," putting a humorous spin on professional athletes whose poor life decisions torpedoed their careers. Even before that, the duo grew up as true crime aficionados. Pietragallo told the Chicago Tribune that his mom "used to read me horrible true-crime books," and Whisman revealed that he was an avid "Dateline" viewer.

The format of "Small Town Murder" will be familiar to fans of the sister show. Each episode focuses on one murder case in a specific location, and it covers killings that might not have received a lot of mainstream press. But the show is about far more than just heinous crimes: Episodes include love triangles, sudden disappearances, and botched relationships, as well as bumbling criminals and the kind of quirky scenarios found only in out-of-the-way places.

So what makes "Small Town Murder" stand out from the true-crime-podcast pack? The impressive amount of research that goes into each episode, for starters. Plus, Pietragallo and Whisman possess an easy camaraderie that softens the tone of the serious subject matter, meaning the show has an expert balance of suspense, mystery, and lighthearted commentary. And perhaps even more important: While the men pepper their well-crafted storytelling with plenty of humor, they always state up front that there's absolutely no mockery of murder victims or their families allowed.

The "Small Town Murder" tour, Shut Up and Give Me Murder!, promises to preserve the spirit of the podcast while giving fans a chance to mix and mingle with other dedicated listeners.

Just as funny as the podcast

by SamK on 4/9/24Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

I last saw the act live at Cobbs almost 6 yrs ago and they are just as funny today in a larger venue. I love how they incorporated the pizza joint reviews into the murder story. They also gracefully handled a brief technical glitch. I would def recommend this dynamic duo.

    Murder in a Small Town

by IJFranchini on 4/9/24Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Great venue and hilarious way of presenting the facts surrounding a murder. The demographic report, comparable home sales, what to do, local restaurants - Seriously funny! and highly recommend!

This is my second time seeing STM live and I will go every time they are local! They are hilarious and do great research. They truly are performers and know how to work a crowd. Not mid.

    We love Small Town Murder!

by Cassie G on 11/10/23The Wilbur - Boston

We listen to Small Town Murder almost daily in my house. We absolutely adore James and Jimmy and were so excited to see that they were coming to perform near us. They always put on a great show and made for a great night out. I will say being in an older building and our seats were in the top deck, the steps were steep and there was no handicap access. Being so high up definitely gave me an uneasy feeling and I usually am not afraid of heights. Once they took the stage I was okay though. Overall, amazing night out and James and Jimmy are the best!!

    Amazing show, great venue

by Angus McNasty on 11/9/23The Wilbur - Boston

Amazing show. James and Jimmie absolutely killed it, as expected. Hope they'll come again soon. Their comedy before the show was great, the music selection was amazing, and the story was insane.

    Terrible

by Terrible on 11/8/23The Wilbur - Boston

Very boring and making fun of reviews of restaurants is not want I was expecting. I would highly suggest not going. Waste of time and money!
