Sister Act on Tour

Crime meets Catholicism in this boisterous and soulful musical adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg starred as a nun on the run. Revised in 2019 to feature a more mature lead character, the reborn Sister Act will have audiences alternating cries of "Hail Mary!" and "Hallelujah!"

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act had its Broadway premiere in 2011. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller), and ran for 561 performances. In late 2019 it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would assume the lead role of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier in 2020 for a limited number of London performances. Goldberg also announced that Brenda Edwards would go on tour in the role of Deloris as rewritten for an older actor. Edwards, as it happened, had been rejected for the same role after auditioning for the original West End premiere of the musical more than a decade earlier. She has appeared previously in We Will Rock You, Chicago and Carousel.

Sister Act Background

A habit becomes a hideout when nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier enters a unique witness protection program after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's songs pay affectionate and witty tribute to the sounds of the '60s and '70s, and the heroine's monastic retreat among The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith provides numerous opportunities for tuneful confessions that scamper between Motown, Philly soul, funk, disco and steamy R&B. After struggling to fit into the order, Deloris finally finds her true place in its choir.

Reviewing Sister Act's Broadway premiere, the New York Post's Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote, "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns!" The musical has also inspired a somewhat surreal side project: nearly 1,000 people donned habits in 2009 for the first annual Sister Act Nuns Run, which earned approximately £30,000 for charity.

    Sister Act

by DressJudge on 2/24/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the artists! So much so I wrote a letter to the Virginian PIlot about their disgusting review of the performance. I sent the letter to the VP editor, the staff writer who wrote it and to the parent company of Sister Act. Thank you all for a most enjoyable and uplifting evening! The audiience was totally involved with laughter and applause throughout!

    Sister Act was Very Entertaining

by SistyI on 2/23/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

I thought Sister Act was done was very well. The singing was excellent. It was funny! I couldn't see the actors expressions as we had second row box seats. I do wish it had better dancers and more of it, especially with the actors who played the three thugs.

    You will definitely have fun

I had a good time at this show, even though I was disappointed that none of the music from the movie is used in the stage production. The disco-inspired score just isn't as catchy or memorable as the songs from the movie. Even so, when the nuns start singing, you're in for a treat.

    Sister Act was great!

by Contended on 1/16/15Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

My overall impression was excellent...the cast was very talented and engaging...Some real standouts...Eddie, Mother Superior, many of the nun chorus...we saw the understudy for the lead at the Saturday matinee, and while she was a wonderful singer and dancer, I had trouble understanding her dialogue at times...I don't know if the speaker system is not very good in the balcony (much of the softer music was often hard to hear) or if the actress wasn't enunciating well while she was rushing her lines--for character, I believe...Some of the solos were too long...too many verses without much variation...Again, overall, a really cute play...I'd forgotten that this play dates itself being set in the "disco era", so some of the references were lost on the young couple, in their 20's, who accompanied us--"Who's Dianne Carroll?, Paul the 6th?...they did know Donna Summer...The costumes were fabulous! The understudy was beautiful in the "white gown and fox stole" with her hair all down and fixed---stunning! Always enjoy the BTL productions!

The Sister Act was good, but I was disappointed that the songs in the movie wasn't sung. "My God" and another song. I guess they didn't have the rights to those songs.

Sister Act was the first play Ive ever attended. I have watched the motion picture many times over as I enjoyed the music that was performed. I was somewhat disappointed since the arrangements were not the ones from the motion picture, but overall I would enjoy watching it again. Knowing now that the music was different I would keep that part of my mind more open.

There were a few things changed in the play from the movie that I think were major differences and should not have been changed!

Music was great. Only complaint was you could not understand lots of the words. Characters spoke too fast and did not enunciate as well as they needed to .

Sister Act Touring Companybshould be on Broadway.

by LCV236 on 1/12/15The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona Beach

The performance of Sister Act in Daytona Beach was excellent. My only complaint was inability to distinguish some speech. I don't know if it was the rapid conversation or the acoustics of the theater.
