Sister Act on Tour

Crime meets Catholicism in this boisterous and soulful musical adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg starred as a nun on the run. Revised in 2019 to feature a more mature lead character, the reborn Sister Act will have audiences alternating cries of "Hail Mary!" and "Hallelujah!"

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act had its Broadway premiere in 2011. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller), and ran for 561 performances. In late 2019 it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would assume the lead role of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier in 2020 for a limited number of London performances. Goldberg also announced that Brenda Edwards would go on tour in the role of Deloris as rewritten for an older actor. Edwards, as it happened, had been rejected for the same role after auditioning for the original West End premiere of the musical more than a decade earlier. She has appeared previously in We Will Rock You, Chicago and Carousel.

Sister Act Background

A habit becomes a hideout when nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier enters a unique witness protection program after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's songs pay affectionate and witty tribute to the sounds of the '60s and '70s, and the heroine's monastic retreat among The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith provides numerous opportunities for tuneful confessions that scamper between Motown, Philly soul, funk, disco and steamy R&B. After struggling to fit into the order, Deloris finally finds her true place in its choir.

Reviewing Sister Act's Broadway premiere, the New York Post's Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote, "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns!" The musical has also inspired a somewhat surreal side project: nearly 1,000 people donned habits in 2009 for the first annual Sister Act Nuns Run, which earned approximately £30,000 for charity.

    Great Evening

Funny, great casting, good music with funny lyrics. Only issue was trying to understand some of the lyrics. Think that was because of the sound technician.

Sister Act certainly didn't represent the movie

by PattieExel on 5/4/15Palace Theatre Columbus - Columbus

I personally felt that the language was totally unappropriate especially when using the Lord's name in vain - Jesus friggen Christ. The audience gasped when that remark came out. I heard several people who were Roman Catholic found the show very disrespectful to their beliefs. It really didn't follow the movie. The movie was funny NOT crude and disrespectful. Leave my Lord's name out of these performances. It does not make the show any better - it only leaves people with a bad taste in their mouths. Many people felt the same way after seeing this.

I was tired and grumpy when I got there but the fun and glitz of Sister Act perked me right up. I left with a big smile and a lighter heart

It has been a long time since I have seen a show that good. And it's rare that I would see one twice. I would definitely go see this one again!

The music was great, the singing was good. But the acoustics made everything sound more like a really good high school production.

This is a FANTASTIC production. A good mix of music & drama. Took my mom for her birthday and she totally enjoyed the experience. Both acts seemed to fly by very quickly.

    Sister Act Norfolk VA

    by vajim52 on 2/24/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Although the show wasn't great, I felt the performers put their heart and soul in to it. Kolby Kindle (Curtis) was excellent as he sounded a lot like Lou Rawls. All the others were very good.

by Sherylgig on 2/24/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Was not pleased at all. A waste of our money. Could not understand/hear the songs that were being sung during the play. Bad acoustics. Also very disappointed that no songs from the movie were sung in the play.

Great performance of the Classic movie

    by Autumn26 on 2/24/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

I got tickets for this play for my mom for Christmas. We went to the 2pm showing at Chrysler Hall on a Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, VA. We both loved the movie Sister Act, so we were looking forward to it. Each role was perfectly cast and the singing and acting was great. There were a lot of funny moments, and a lot of great songs, and great scene sets and costumes. I have seen Wicked on Broadway in NYC and The Lion King on Broadway in Richmond, VA, and I would have to say the The Lion King is my all-favorite. Wicked is my 2nd favorite, and then the Sister Act is a close third, but they are all great and worth-seeing.

    Very disappointed!

by sjgmag on 2/24/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

The music was totally different from the movie and we found that very disappointing. The talent of the cast was excellent. If they had only used the original songs it would have been fantastic.
