Sister Act on Tour
Crime meets Catholicism in this boisterous and soulful musical adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg starred as a nun on the run. Revised in 2019 to feature a more mature lead character, the reborn Sister Act will have audiences alternating cries of "Hail Mary!" and "Hallelujah!"
With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act had its Broadway premiere in 2011. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller), and ran for 561 performances. In late 2019 it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would assume the lead role of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier in 2020 for a limited number of London performances. Goldberg also announced that Brenda Edwards would go on tour in the role of Deloris as rewritten for an older actor. Edwards, as it happened, had been rejected for the same role after auditioning for the original West End premiere of the musical more than a decade earlier. She has appeared previously in We Will Rock You, Chicago and Carousel.
Sister Act Background
A habit becomes a hideout when nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier enters a unique witness protection program after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's songs pay affectionate and witty tribute to the sounds of the '60s and '70s, and the heroine's monastic retreat among The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith provides numerous opportunities for tuneful confessions that scamper between Motown, Philly soul, funk, disco and steamy R&B. After struggling to fit into the order, Deloris finally finds her true place in its choir.
Reviewing Sister Act's Broadway premiere, the New York Post's Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote, "Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns!" The musical has also inspired a somewhat surreal side project: nearly 1,000 people donned habits in 2009 for the first annual Sister Act Nuns Run, which earned approximately £30,000 for charity.

by flossybelle on 12/9/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoTwo friends and I went to see this play and we haven't stopped talking about it yet! The story was a little different than the movie, the music fantastic and there were laughs galore, making this a terrific facial workout! I have recommended this to several people and perhaps I'll go again myself.
Rating: 4 out of 5 SISTERACT...ENERGY ,FUN FLUFF
by OLDERACTOR on 12/9/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoEven with the stand by going on for the lead,or maybe because of it, the energy and focus of the cast of SISTER ACT made it a fun evening of theatre. The Show doesnt pretend to have much depth....but a lot of heart. Each character having their moment to shine and a plot which never gets in the way. It was a fine night of entertainment.

by LeopoldTCat on 12/9/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoI expected Sister Act to be a Up Beat Musical production and after seeing the original movie I wondered how the transition from a Movie to a Play would be handled? On all accounts it exceeded my expectations. All the performances were superb the writing was excellent and the Stagecraft was impressive. All in All I rate the performance 5 Star! (Kind of missed the song "My Guy / My God" from the movie

Rating: 5 out of 5 Great Singing, Good Acting
by phxint on 12/9/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoSister Act was a lot of fun. The whole crowd was getting into it during the numerous choir scenes and the bit with the three "mob guys" showing off their "special moves" that get the girls was nothing short of hysterical! The acting was so-so, but it looks like this cast was picked for their voices more than their acting abilities and that is a good choice for this type of show. I highly recommend seeing this one as everyone was smiling on the way out!
Rating: 4 out of 5 Sister Act was fabulous
by nyrose52 on 12/9/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoIt was very upbeat & exciting,. Shouting & singing as expected and easy to follow. Laughed out loud several times. They had to change Delores' for some reason & while the 2nd Delores was good , she did not have the voice of the 1st. But loved the show. As always the acoustics at the Bob Carr auditorium are awful. Sometimes the high notes hurts your ears !!
Rating: 5 out of 5 One of the most fun musicals I have seen in years.
by Coryson on 12/8/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoI laughed the whole way through this musical. The songs and writing were perfect comedic timing. Great job of singing and harmonizing by the "nuns".

Rating: 5 out of 5 Brilliant!
by FromUK on 12/7/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - OrlandoExcellent performance by all concerned. We had a change of 'Delores' midway but the understudy continued to the same high standard set by Ta'rae Campbell. Big bonus was the outstanding quality of the sound reproduction - every word of every song was clear making the following of the storyline so much easier. Enjoyed every moment of the professional and well choreographed show. A huge success.
