Fantastic space for this program. Seeing a classic silent movie accompanied by a gifted organist...brilliant. Last year, I saw Nosferatu at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Different organist. Different score. Different experience. Both fantastic, but fascinating to see how a scored changed the way you can receive a film. If I lived in San Diego, I would live at the Balboa theatre for SILENT MOVIE MONDAYS.
The Balboa Theater provides a classic theater experience. Comfortable seats with good sight lines and lovely ushers. The upgraded HVAC provides great air circulation but it may chill your feet, due to floor air vents. The outdoor refreshments could use better trained staff, they could only serve about a third of the people in line.
I took my 86yo neighbor and we both had such a great time. They had a little photo op space with masks and roses, which was adorable. The crowd was so eclectic, young and old, dressed to the nines and casual...The whole spectrum...fresh popcorn and red wine...a great time indeed!
Amazing event, love the music and the vibe, for cinema lovers its a most
I am going to say that it was nice to do something a little out of the ordinary. I feel like I experienced something that most people don't ever experience nowadays. The organ player did a fantastic job.
High quality film projection, wonderful.live organ accompaniment, enthusiastic audience. A perfect example of why I return to the cinena often!
Flesh and the Devil was so much fun to watch and very racy for the 1920’s. The pipe organ accompaniment was so spot on with the action and the mood. We stayed for a bit after the show to hear a little about the film including that this was Garbo’s first American film. She was 20. She plays a marvelous wicked siren. Being downtown in the Gaslamp was great for getting a nice dinner beforehand. This was a fun evening overall.
Silent movies are a glorious art form! Any time you have the chance to see one of these old pictures with a proper organist accompanying the movie, go for it!
What a great night - the organist was spectacular and without it the movie would have been - blah. Loved the Mask of Zorro - great copy to watch with few flaws. Audience involvement made it extra special, with claps, boos, sighs, and more. Plus the Balboa Theatre is the prefect place to see Old Movies. Puts you back in time just being there. And it has a great concession stand - not just popcorn and soda. Hope to see you at the June 9 Silent Film Night.
