  • fantastic!

by Coral on 4/17/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

The guitar player was expert and wonderful. The film was exciting and funny, and gave me an understanding of the charm of silent film. And the organ music was creative and varied. Great experience, definitely am going to the next one.

  • Amazing Zorro!

by Sue on 4/17/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

The silent movie was preceded by Fred Benedetti playing guitar-outstanding! The movie itself was entertaining and it was interesting to see the overly done expressions on the cast to impart their feelings as there was no sound. Seeing the refurbished organ at the Balboa was a real highlight and Ken Double was spot on with the accompaniment to the film. Another highlight was Ken and the CCEO of the International Film festival reviewing the film afterwards and sharing many interesting facts. Such as, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. did all of his own stunts! And, he was very active in this film. Much enjoyed by all, in this beautiful theater designed for such entertainment!

  • A blast from the past!

by Miles T on 4/17/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

It was a lot of fun to see such a classic film the way it was intended to be shown- on a large screen in a grand old theater, with an organist playing the accompaniment. I'd recommend attending a Monday Night Silent Film presentation to anyone who might consider themselves a lover of cinema.

  • Must see on big screen!

    by MiRo25 on 2/27/25Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great time we had! Russ Peck (organist) was fantastic and gave us some great insights and stories. The movies were so much fun, and we all laughed throughout. Definitely should see it on a big screen with a live organist playing. I now understand why Charlie Chaplin is such a big deal. He is absolutely one of a kind.

  • Fantastic Night At The Balboa

by Don S. on 12/18/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This event had way more elements to it than I expected. Yes, there were two, short silent film comedies, but there was also a performance by the San Diego Children's Chorus (who sang holiday favorites), a storybook time at intermission by Santa, a post film talk back and a snow making machine with greetings from Santa as everyone was leaving. The event was very well attended. The previous event, a screening for 1925's "Phantom of the Opera", sold out. I'm very much looking forward to the next two screenings!

  • Silent Movie Monday

by Connie on 12/16/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Silent Movie Monday was fantastic. It was my 71st birthday and me and my daughter attended. The movies were hilarious. I loved both movies. Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy were ridiculously funny. The audience and organ player were awesome!! I have already purchased tickets for February and April. My daughter and I are avid silent movie fans.

  • Don't miss historic films

by Michael on 11/19/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

To experience a historic silent film with the accompaniment of Russ Peck (a professional organist) playing compositions from the movie's period is a cultural experience. To imagine that this restored San Diego venue is also from the time of history the film was released, made seeing Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera really special. At whatever time of year, this is a great night out at the Balboa Theatre. Please support Silent Movie Mondays.

  • Such an amazing event!!

by Alysse on 10/31/24Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I wasn't sure what to expect since I'd never been to an event like this, but I have nothing but amazing things to say about it. It was so much fun, and I truly enjoyed every second of it. Not to mention, I was in awe the entire time of the live organ player! I highly recommend going to one of the silent movie events!
