    High school musical

by Mackenzie on 4/2/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

So first let me start off by saying the performers have absolutely amazing voices! The low review is not about them at all! They were fantastic and would really succeed in a broadway style musical. The reason for the 2 stars is the fact that my wife and I went on a date to see what we thought was going to be a really nice musical at the Louisville palace. However we were shocked. We almost left 5 minutes in because we thought it was a joke. The set and costumes looked like it was a high school (at most) musical. I honestly feel so bad because their voices were fantastic but the set, the props, and costumes were very very amateur. Literally cardboard cutouts and construction paper style. I understand this is shrek a kids based musical but you don’t go to lion king or Aladdin and see cardboard. I wasn’t expecting this musical to be broadway but I definitely didn’t expect this either. Super letdown and honestly wish to get my money back.

    Thoroughly enjoyed it.

by Suprisingly great singing on 4/2/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

The costumes and set design are very mediocre. Think high school production. But the vocals were very exceptional and the cast was very entertaining! We took our 11 year old daughter and she enjoyed it. She preferred the 2nd half. Overall, I'm glad we went. The crowd gave the show a standing ovation at the end if that tells you anything. Like I said, it's a mix between high school set design and professional singers.

    Dull and just Eh

by River on 4/1/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Shrek The Musical was very dull and a little boring. It seemed like a second rate production that reminded me of a high school production. Yes, there might have to be a lot of puppets used and needed to be used, but sometimes I wondered why there were puppeteers and then voice people also on the stage for the same puppet. The puppets were not doing that hard of a task. And could the puppeteers be a little more conspicuous. I don't know, don't they have black see through masks? The lighting could also focus more on the puppet and not on everyone around. The original songs were very boring and as I was bored and looked around at all of the kids who were probably bored as well and didn't know what was happening. I mean can't they be a little more upbeat and fun. Do something like Cruel Intentions Musical and incorporate known songs that kids might know and that are relevant to the sceen. Even songs that the adults might know from the past and that they would play for there kids that might trigger the memory of going to see Shrek the Musical. But there really wasn't anything memorable abould Shrek the Musical. There were times when I just wanted the song being sung to end because it was so boring. And I always thought about what the kids were thinking. The comedy was subpar and of course the biggest laughs came from the flatulence, which is pretty sad for a production. Maybe because that is the only thing that the kids understood. I thought it could have been done much better and no wonder why a lot of seats were unsold. For the price, it should have been a lot better.

    No Comparison

by Darlene on 4/1/24Robinson Center - Little Rock

I came into the musical having NEVER WATCHED the movie. I had a basic recognition of the main characters, but not the entire cast from the movie. Watching with new eyes I was able to follow the plot with no preconceived opinions. I LOVE THE MUSICAL!!!! The actors did a wonderful job!!!

    Extremely Disappointed

by Nick on 4/1/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

I feel like I paid Broadway prices, but didn’t get Broadway quality. The set was a large fabric(?) circle that was lifted up to be the sun and moon based on lighting. The costumes were minimal and appeared half thrown together. Shrek had hair. Donkey was what looked like a hoodie, etc. The cut outs and puppets weren’t appealing to me. The music and actors did well with what they had. What was advertised and what I physically saw were not the same. I wanted to walk out 5 minutes in. I stayed for my partner who liked the actors only.

by Lovinglife on 3/30/24Robinson Center - Little Rock

The whole family really loved this. It was very funny and entertaining. We went in, not being sure if it would be good for adults, but it was outstanding. We highly recommend this musical.

    Loved it

by Givens on 3/30/24Robinson Center - Little Rock

Didn’t know what to expect because I had read some reviews. I took my 14 yr old grandson because he’s playing Shrek in our local theater. We both loved it. The actors were fantastic! Bravo

    Worth the see

    by Betterdaysagain on 3/29/24

The story was enjoyed- hit all the highlights of the original movie. The audience stayed engaged with laughter at appropriate times. The audience consisted of a variety of ages from very young to quite elderly. The children in front and behind us easily followed the storyline… I have seen Shrek the musical at 7 venues, including school drama teams to community theaters. This one also didn’t disappoint.

Not the show I was expecting

by Wadester on 3/27/24Peoria Civic Center - Peoria

This is a watered-down version of the story you know and love. While most of the highlights were present, Farquaad stood up to his full height, Donkey wore a track suit and look like a kid on the corner . . . Frankly, I've seen better productions in community theater.

    Changed way too much

by User46865368 on 3/27/24Peoria Civic Center - Peoria

Took a completely different path from the original broadway version, and then got rid of awesome moments like the Fiona tap dancing scenes and the song "Build a Wall". Also seemed like a lazy production by making the "story tellers"look like stage hands and gave them half-baked costumes, as well as getting rid of the castings for the young Fionas and the parents. The local productions I have seen that stayed true to the original have been better than this production, unfortunately. Some of the characters stayed great though- Donkey, Pinocchio, Gingy, and the Wolf stood out.

    Possitive Message

by Ginny on 3/27/24Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

It started out a little "iffy"but quickly won us over with the smart writing and dialog. I love that it had such a positive message!

    Fun for adults, too!

by KW on 3/27/24Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

My mom (80 y.o) and I went for an afternoon showing and it was great. I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. The sets and effects are not anything special, but the story and music were lively and funny. I would definitely go again.

    Fun and entertaining

    by Suzanne on 3/25/24

My friend and I are in our 60s and thoroughly enjoyed this show. We won the tickets in a promotion but I still recommend this show for family fun. The plot pretty much follows the original movie but the actors, costumes and music make this musical so enjoyable. We laughed a lot during the whole show. My only complaint is that there was only one person working at the souvenir stand which made for a very long line. We saw the show in Peoria, IL.

    Shrek

by MPound on 3/16/24Arizona Financial Theatre - Phoenix

The show was fun but different from the streaming Broadway show. It had fewer songs and the sets were not as elaborate. But the music and theme were great with good actors and script. I liked it a lot but was hoping for more. The theater was part of the letdown with concrete floors and high school looking interiors. Overall, I would recommend seeing Shrek the musical but lower expectations going in.
