Shin Lim on Tour

Catching Shin Lim in the act is unlike watching any other magician perform. Instead of making people disappear or sawing them in half, he simply concentrates on card tricks. But he raises the level of his sleight of hand with a deck of cards to a fine art.

There's drama, music, and a kind of a ballet to Lim's magic. And he's known for performing his illusions without uttering a word, letting his hands and his cards do all the talking while his carefully curated music — Lim started out as a musician — tickles the audience's ears. If you've seen him in one of his many television appearances, be it Penn & Teller: Fool Us, America's Got Talent, or Jimmy Kimmel Live, then you've experienced only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a Shin Lim live performance.

Shin Lim Background

Born in Vancouver to Singaporean parents and raised in Massachusetts, Shin Lim had two passions in his youth: music and magic. He was studying music in college when he learned that he was suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. This discovery caused him to abandon playing the piano in favor of becoming a professional magician.

He got one of his first big breaks when he was given the chance to tour in China. Since he didn't speak the language, he kept silent during his tricks, and that practice became a signature of his shows. Bringing a bold, unprecedented artistry to the realm of card tricks, Lim really began to hit it big when he worked his magic on TV's Penn & Teller: Fool Us in 2015. The performance became a social media sensation that elevated his profile dramatically. Since then, he's frequently appeared on TV, twice becoming a winner on America's Got Talent. And he tours widely, taking his illusions everywhere from Las Vegas to Broadway.

Parking was $40.....that was never disclosed ahead of time. Colin Cloud was Awesome, funny and personable. Just excellent ! Shin Lim seemed off this night. A card fell down from his coat....on a string.... The card trick with the ripping of the cards from the envelop did not work for 3 of the 4 of us.... The cameras were terrible....bottom screen was blurry and dark...couldnt see hardly at all. Shin Lim is usually Wonderful .....but he was off this night...

The show was amazing, I sat in the front row and still couldn't figure out how he did the card tricks. His slight of hand is unbelievable. My family and I did the meet and greet and he is so super sweet. This is my second time seeing him and I would see him again.

  • Worst show ever....

by Professor Zee on 1/15/20Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

This was the worst magic show ever! They should be ashamed of themselves! They trIED to do close-up magic in a large auditorium but had a small screen and an amateur camera operator. The camera operator kept on losing the trick and we didn’t see anything! Very very very sad show!

Had the meet and greet afterwards, and both Shin Lim and Colin Cloud were so friendly. Great magic. The two were very contrasting in their magic. Card magic from Shin and mentalism from Colin. Wonderful!

Time was split between Shin Lim and the other act. 20 minute intermission. This was a Christmas present for my 13 year old daughter. Didn't feel like it was worth anything near the almost $200. I spent for the 2of us.

My family attend the show and are still talking about! It was engaging, interactive and simply amazing! Such a fun evening filled with anticipation, excitement, wonder and amazement. Very entertaining with lots of smiles and gasps of “how did they do that?” My only critique (and this is why I didn’t give it 5 stars) was the VIP portion. We were specifically emailed to stay in our seats and wait to be ushered into the meet and greet area. Well we followed the directions and unfortunately everyone else had already lined up which meant we were at the very end of the line. We had to wait close to two hours to meet Shin Lim. The show didn’t end till after 10pm which meant a very late night of waiting in a hot hallway with a child. My advice is next time all people should have to remain in their seats and be ushered in and that families with children should be allowed first entry.

Theater is intimate. Big screen used to show close up was terrible. Camera work was iffy. Shim lin was excellent. Very entertaining

  • Shin Lim at the Chevallier Theater

by Newmexdex on 1/11/20Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 4 out of 5

Shin Lim is an amazing performer. The act is entertaining and engaging. The Chevallier Theater in Medford MA. is old and out of date. The views from the balcony are somewhat obstructed by the railing at the edge. The seats are hard and narrow. The legroom is limited. It feels very congested in the winter, when everyone has heavy coats. The theater has no real parking. You have to search around The streets for a spot. There is some limited paid parking near by, but it is expensive. See Shim Lim! Find a better venue.

  • Amazing and entertaining

    by Karen L on 1/11/20Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Shin Lim shared the stage with Colin McCloud. Both were fabulous and mind-boggling. They engaged with the audience very well and drew us in immediately. The venue however is horrible. Shabby, tiny crowded lobby, no parking, and expensive, weak drinks.

  • Limitless

    by K. on 1/11/20Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 3 out of 5

The show was amazing, I was in aw from left to right! I was not impressed by the theater layout for closeup magic though. I was sitting towards the back and had a very hard time seeing Shin Lim’s acts. His last act the camera’s shadows was getting in the way of his hands and that was discouraging. Was there a dress rehearsal? It would be awesome if there were small TVs in the upper balcony or do not sell upper balcony tickets for magic shows like this- not worth $70.

  • Amazing!

Both Shin Lim and Colin Cloud blew our minds. They love performing, and are funny and sincere. SIn Lim’s card tricks are so fantastic, and his piano playing is impressive too! Colin Cloud was funny and equally amazing in talent. A must see show!
