Shin Lim on Tour

Catching Shin Lim in the act is unlike watching any other magician perform. Instead of making people disappear or sawing them in half, he simply concentrates on card tricks. But he raises the level of his sleight of hand with a deck of cards to a fine art.

There's drama, music, and a kind of a ballet to Lim's magic. And he's known for performing his illusions without uttering a word, letting his hands and his cards do all the talking while his carefully curated music — Lim started out as a musician — tickles the audience's ears. If you've seen him in one of his many television appearances, be it Penn & Teller: Fool Us, America's Got Talent, or Jimmy Kimmel Live, then you've experienced only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a Shin Lim live performance.

Shin Lim Background

Born in Vancouver to Singaporean parents and raised in Massachusetts, Shin Lim had two passions in his youth: music and magic. He was studying music in college when he learned that he was suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. This discovery caused him to abandon playing the piano in favor of becoming a professional magician.

He got one of his first big breaks when he was given the chance to tour in China. Since he didn't speak the language, he kept silent during his tricks, and that practice became a signature of his shows. Bringing a bold, unprecedented artistry to the realm of card tricks, Lim really began to hit it big when he worked his magic on TV's Penn & Teller: Fool Us in 2015. The performance became a social media sensation that elevated his profile dramatically. Since then, he's frequently appeared on TV, twice becoming a winner on America's Got Talent. And he tours widely, taking his illusions everywhere from Las Vegas to Broadway.

  • Great show, mediocre venue

    by K. on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 3 out of 5

I will start by saying that Shin Lim is AMAZING. He does tricks that I literally cannot figure out how someone could even possibly do. The audience kept gasping with each new card trick, and my girls were going nuts. We also really enjoyed the magician who was with him as sort of an MC... he was both very funny, and also did extremely good magic tricks. However, the Chevalier Theatre in Medford was not the right venue for this sort of show. The theater felt like a high school auditorium; the view from the balcony seats was horrible, because the pitch wasn't very steep; and the video screens showing what was actually happening on stage were small, not very clear, and weren't pointing directly at the audience, making it even harder to see what was happening. I can imagine that at a good theater with good sight lines and good video screens (and a nice ambience) this show would have been excellent, but in this location, we'd probably have had a better time staying home and watching it on TV.

  • Staff at the facility were great.

Quality of acts were amazing. Disappointed that Shim didn't perform more. The alternate act was amazing and engaging. His humor was great. I would pay to see him perform.

  • Under whelming

by Adam on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 3 out of 5

Shin Lim did nothing new. Lighting was off and casted shadows on his hands. The screen was not clear enough to truly appreciate the slight of hand. Too much wasted filler time with the sidekick.

  • half billed

by mom to young magician on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 4 out of 5

Shin is a great magician - no question. But the billing did not say that he only does half (maybe less than half) of the show. Another magician/comedian does the other half. The other guy was really great, way more fun and energetic (Shin is very serious) and also a great magician. So all is good but when we bought the tickets, they should have been more transparent that this is not a Shim Lim show. Its this other guy with Shin sprinkled in between the other guy's act.

  • Disappointed

I bought these tickets to see Shin Lim after seeing him on America’s got Talent and Fool penn and teller. Before we get to how little we actually got to see of Shin there were multiple other issues. Magic is tough to watch live unless you have first row or get picked to be on stage. So you have to rely a lot on the video setup and the camera man. The large projector on the stage was blown out and dark. You could BARELY make out an image on it. The RGB led screens upstairs (the kind you’d see at TD garden to show advertising)are not meant to show magic so the little deatails get lost. You can’t even make out what number or suit the cards were. Out of the whole two hour show we got about a total of 30mins of Shin doing all the same tricks he’s done on AGT already. Which was a little disappointing considering 99% of the people there watched him on AGT (which is why they bought tickets and even know his name) so we’ve ALL seen those tricks before. His partner/Hype-man made up the other hour and a half of the show. He was actually pretty funny and a decent magician himself. But we came to see Shin Lim and not Sideshow bob. I’ll never waste my money again to see Shin Lim and I would suggest you don’t either.

  • Shin Lim was just as wonderful as his AGT performance

by Gette on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act was great as well. The only thing is the AV at the Chevalier was not on point. We had seating up close, but for anyone in the mid or back, it would be hard to see. The graphics on the TV brought in were not good on the main stage screen.

  • Shin Lim was amazing!!

The show was great the venue not so much. Wish it was somewhere larger so people in the balcony could see.

  • What??? How did that happen!!!

Great show highly entertaining - such talent mesmerizing!

  • LOVED THE SHOW!

by Angela on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Shin Lim was amazing...although I wish he had had more magical tricks throughout the show. We also thought that the opening act, Ben, who also did comedy as well as different magic acts intermittently in the show, was terrific. I would go see them both again, and highly recommend Shin Lim.

  • Our seats were obstructed view

The show was outstanding. The seats not so much. The price of drinks was outrageous! Robbery.

  • Truly magical!

by Sharl on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Shin Lim, the amazingly talented magician known for his winning performances on "America's Got Talent" presented a wonderful night's entertainment. Although many of the 'tricks' had previously been seen by audience members on television, the mastery of his craft was truly awe-inspiring when seen in person. Ben Seidman, himself a talented magician, pickpocket and comedian, was the perfect accompaniment to Lim's performance. Where Lim seemed a bit ill at east when speaking with the audience about his background, Seidman was relaxed and engaging. The evening would only have been improved by being held in a better venue. The Chevalier is a no-frills theater with limited parking (unless you're willing to pay surly attendants $30!) and poor handicap access.

  • He has an amazing personality and talent

  • Entertaining

by Dana on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 4 out of 5

Sitting in the balcony and mostly watching the camera projecting onto the screen I would have enjoyed it almost as much staying home and watching it on tv.

  • Not what was expected

    by J. L. on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 3 out of 5

Shin Lim was incredible. We were disappointed that it seemed that his MC, Ben Seidman, got more stage time than Shin Lim did. Ben was incredibly funny and entertaining and I would buy tickets to see Ben Seidman alone, but it seemed misleading when the show was advertised as Shin Lim’s show not as a “Night of Magic” duo act as the show turned out to be. The venue, the Chevalier theater in Medford, definitely cheapened the experience and left us feeling even more disappointed. The theater was essentially an old high school auditorium. We paid for orchestra seats but were just a few rows from the rear of the theater. The quality of the video screen that they had onstage to show close ups was 1990s quality at best and a lot of the magic of Shin Lim’s close up slight of hand magic was lost. If I had known all of this I would have saved my money and watched videos of Shin Lim on You Tube.

  • The Magician

by Chelle on 3/12/19Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

He was amazing, I wish that they involved different parts of the crowd more instead of just the first few front rows. Also a meet and greet would have been a nice addition to the show.

  • Spectacular performance

Amazing acts and better than he was on tv. Second magician also was very good
